The womens bracket at Wimbledon 2007 is a heckuva lot more open than the mens bracket.

I'm not saying that any of them women on this list have a legitimate shot to win. I'm saying that there is no one quite as dominant as Roger Federer on the women's side. Any of the top five have a legitimate shot to take the tournament. You could make a good case that any of the top three are the favorites.

Justine Henin (drop the Hardenne now that she's going through a divorce) is a slight favorite at 7/2. But I wouldn't exactly take those odds, because grass isn't her best surface.

Henin will be a force at the French Open. And if she wins the French, her stock at Wimbledon will probably go up. But there is almost no connection between clay court and grass court results, so don't necessarily use the French Open as a sign of what might happen the next month in London.

Serena Williams is in the middle of a career renaissance. She won the Australian Open, despite looking suspiciously like she's still a little out of shape. There were times at the Aussie that the heat looked to be wearing her out, but she came through in the end. I imagine that Williams would be the odds-on favorite if she looked entirely in shape.

Serena is clearly the most talented player on the womens tour. It's a shame that injuries have hampered her training in what should be the prime of her career. That being said, Serena is putting up solid results in 2007 and I might well take her on the grass courts as the favorite. Forget what she does at the French, it will have no bearing on her chances at Wimbledon. Do watch her injury situation before making this bet.

When Sharapova won the U.S. Open to end the 2006 season, she looked to have legitimized her 2004 win at Wimbledon with her second career Grand Slam. When Sharapova began to race through the Australian Open with little trouble, it looked like 2007 might be the year she took over the womens game. Then she posted a shattering 6-1, 6-2 to the #81 seed, Serena Williams, to bow out of the Australian.

Sharapova had another 6-1, 6-1 loss to Williams recently. This looks like a disturbing trend for Maria fans. As a 6-foot slammer, Maria Sharapova seems to have all the skills to sit atop the tennis world. But every time she looks perched to become the undisputed #1, someone steps up to knock her out of a major.

Don't get me wrong. Two majors before the age of twenty is pretty darned good. BUt if she can't even compete with Serena Williams, that's going to make winning majors extremely difficult these next couple of years.

Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters either one could pull off a Wimbledon win. Both should reach the Round of 8. But both are battling injuries right now, so don't place a bet on either of them until you're sure they'll appear at Wimbledon and have a serious shot at winning. Because both have missed time this spring, they are forgotten players right now. Their betting odds might look better a month from now.

Of the two, I would be more leary of Clijsters. It seems like injuries have become a constant with her these past couple of years.

Venus Williams comes in at 11-to-1. Once again, injuries have damaged her career in recent years. But if you are looking for mid-range odds, she's a former chance whose best surface is probably grass. You're betting on a former champion, though one that is almost an afterthought these days on the womens tour.

As far as the remaining players, there's a glut of Russian players with an outside chance. Until one of them breaks through at Wimbledon, though, there are too many favorites ahead of them to give them much of a shot. If you have one favorite, that player can lose and open up the bracket. With three favorites, you have to assume one of them will be on the top of their game.
