Round Pond Injured - Forced to Retire - Big News in the World of Horse Racing
Sad news in the world of horse racing. Round Pond, the winner of the prestigious 2006 Emirates Airlines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, finished in third-place in the $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park. She also finished with a slab fracture to her left knee and has been forced into retirement.
The 5-year-old filly was flown from Oaklawn to Keeneland on Monday morning, and X-rays of her knees are being forwarded to renowned vet Dr. Larry Bramlage. It has yet to be determined whether or not Round Pond will need surgery.
Following recuperation, Round Pond will be used for breeding. Leading stallion choices at the moment are A.P. Indy or Storm Cat.
Round Pond retires with 7 wins in 13 starts, two seconds and three thirds, and earnings of $1,998,700. In addition to the Breeder‘s Cup Distaff, she also won the Acorn, Fantasy, Azeri Breeders‘ Cup, and Honeybee Stakes. She is the product of stud Awesome Again and mare Gift of Dance.
According to her owner Rick Porter, “I don’t think I’ll ever have another filly like Round Pond. They don’t come around very often. She overcame a lot of physical problems, and she had an excuse for every time she got beat. She’s a tough, tough filly.”
At least now she gets to retire and focus on eating and having sex. We should all be so lucky.
