UFC Fight Night 9 - Fight Results - MMA

On April 5th, 2007, Spike TV broadcast UFC Fight Night 9 live from The Palms Casino in Las Vegas.
Two top Lightweights were featured on the card, Joe Stevenson and Melvin Guillard. Stevenson won the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighter 2, and Guillard was also a member of that cast. UFC Lightweight champ Kenny Florian was also scheduled to appear.
Former UFC Heavyweight champ Frank Mir was also scheduled to fight, but he was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury. He was replaced by Justin McCully, a member of Tito Ortiz’ Team Punishment.
Welterweight Anthony Torres and Jeff Joslin were also removed from the card. Wander Braga, who was scheduled to fight Kurt Pellegrino, was also removed from the card. While these things happen, having to replace 4 different fighters sounds a little high. Still, Mir’s best days are far behind him, so it’s not as though it’s some great loss.
With the thriving popularity of the UFC, there’s no doubt that there was plenty of betting action on last night’s fights. In case you were wagering on any of the outcomes (or just in case you were curious), here are the matches, along with the winners and the losers.
Thiago Tavares vs. Naoyuki Kotani - Thiago Tavares wins by a straight 30-27 unanimous decision. The fight mostly stayed on the ground where Tavares controlled the action. The crowd was restless and seemed pretty bored.
Roan Carneiro vs. Rich Clementi - Carneiro wins a 30-27 unanimous decision. A dominant performance, but this show isn’t off to the most exciting start.
Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs. Forrest Petz - Hironaka wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27). Petz got in some strikes and bloodied his opponent, while Hironaka dominated most of the fight with takedowns and holds.
Kurt Pellgrino vs. Nate Mohr - Pellgrino got the submission win in the first round, taking Mohr down and then applying an ankle lock.
Drew Fickett vs. Keita Nakamura - Drew Fickett won by unanimous decision (30-26,29-27, and 29-27). Some pretty good striking in the first 2 rounds, and Nakamura even had a point deducted for hitting a Dusty Rhodes’ elbow attack.
Wilson Gouveia vs. Seth Petruzelli - The first round was close. In the second, Petruzelli went for a takedown and got caught in a guillotine choke. Petruzelli was forced to submit.
Kenny Florian vs. Dokonjonosuke Mishima - Florian dominated most of this match, but Mishima got a kneebar in the third and came very close to winning. Florian was able to slip out, lock in a choke, and finally submit Mishima in the latter stages of the third round.
Antoni Hardonk vs. Justin McCully - Close first round. McCully took control in the second and bloodied his opponent. Hardonk came out with renewed energy in the third, but McCully was able to take him down and keep him there. McCully win with a 30-27 unanimous decision.
Joe Stevenson vs. Melvin Guillard - This one was over fast. Stevenson took him down immediately and went for an ankle lock. Guillard escaped but got caught in a guillotine choke. Stevenson won by submission in 27 seconds.
And that was UFC Fight Night 9. PRIDE Heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Noguerira was also at the show, and the speculation was that he would be announced as signing with the UFC (since they recently bought out PRIDE). Unfortunately, no such announcement was ever made. Guess we’ll have to hope for that at some point in the future.
