CURLIN
This year's favorite is Curlin, at 9/5. He received a solid post position, taking the #2 spot. If Curlin can avoid being pinned inside, he should have the shortest route of the field. Another Steve Asmussen trained horse, Zanjero, goes from the #3 spot. Having a familiar horse next to him might help.
Curlin skipped his 2-year old season and has only raced three times. He has won those three races by a combined 28 links, though. Curlin is a complete wild card this year.
STREET SENSE
If you prefer more seasoned horses with your mint julip, Street Sense is just an half-step behind Curlin in the odds. Street Sense won the Juvenile Breeders Cup, so it has a history of winning against big competition. This horse has a decent post position, starting at the #7 spot. He is trained by Carl Nafzager.
OTHER OPTIONS
Nobiz Like Shobiz and Circular Quay are each listed at 8 to 1. They go off at the #12 and #16 spots, respectively. Hard Spun and Scat Daddy have mid-level odds and are also well-situated.
Strangely, three of the biggest names in horse training won't field a horse at Churchill Downs this year.
D. Wayne Lucas and Bob Baffert are sitting this one out, so the race has lost a couple of its big personalities. Lucas has trained a winning horse four times and Baffert has three winners to his credit. Nick Zito, with two Kentucky Derby winners to his credit, is also absent.
