Alberto Gonzales Resignation Bet Update

Here's an update of the Bodog political proposition bet involving U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Gonzales has been under fire for the Justice Department's firing of 8 U.S. attorneys in 2006. Critics have said the firings were politically motivated, because several of the attorneys fired were probing misconduct claims on the part of Republican politicians.
The Attorney General Gonzales resignation bet poses whether he will resign or be fired before July 4, 2007. Here's the odds.
Yes +135
No -175
Alberto Gonzales has said he will not resign, that President Bush will have to ask him to resign. President Bush says that he has no intention of doing so.
Political pundits claim that Bush has no reason to force Gonzales out, since he is unlikely to change opinions of himself or his past actions by forcing Gonzales to quit. But a growing chorus of Republicans in Congress are calling for Gonzales to resign.
These calls got louder yesterday when a former U.S. Assistant Attorney General under John Ashcroft accused Gonzales of further unethical conduct.
In a Breitbart.com article, James Comey claims that Gonzales approached Ashcroft while he was in a hospital I.R. unit, trying to coerce the AG to sign off on President Bush's controversial domestic eavesdropping program.
After the testimony, more Republicans called for a Gonzales resignation.
This sets up a "no confidence" vote in the U.S. Senate next week. Insiders claim that up to 70% of the Senate may vote against Gonzales on the "no confidence" call. This would mean nearly 20 Republican senators, or 40% of the G.O.P. in the Senate, would be sending a message to the White House that they want Gonzales to go.
It's uncertain whether Gonzales and Bush could withstand such pressure from their own party members, who are concerned how the appearance of unethical conduct at the highest levels of government will affect their reelection chances in 2008.
While it seemed a long shot that Gonzales would resign before July 4th, now I'm beginning to think that Alberto Gonzales might be on his way out of Washington. You might consider heading to Bodog to get in on this wager.
