American Idol and Dancing With The Stars

Two of the biggest talent contests have just finished another season and here are the results.

American Idol

The votes are in...over 74 million Americans voted...and the winner...will be announced after this commercial.

Actually, the winner is Jordin Sparks. No surprise here, really. Jordin had been a co-favorite with Melinda Doolittle until last week. After Doolittle was voted off in the Round of 3, it was all but a certainty that Jordin Sparks would win the contest.

I would have preferred to see Blake Lewis win American Idol. He at least has his own sound, his own vibe. It would have been cool to see someone a little different than just a pop act win the contest.

It hardly matters in the end. Look at last year. Taylor Hicks won, but I think three or four of the other contestants had better record sales this year. Chris Daughtry, Eliot Yamin, Katherine McPhee and even Bucky have had more sales. Take that, Taylor Hicks!

Jordin's Bodog odds were originally 5 to 2. Blake's were 4 to 1. Once again, Bodog had the top three nailed. Guess America is a little more predictable than you would imagine. The voting public never strays too far from the path.

Dancing With the Stars

The votes are in and Apolo Anton Ohno is the new champion of Dancing With the Stars. Ohno was known for his determination. As an Olympic level athlete who still competes at a high level in his sport, Apolo Anton might have had a certain advantage. Of course, I guess he was competing against man who made a living as singer/dancer and a woman who is a professional boxer.

Apollo Anton Ohno and his partner, Julianne Hough, had 5 to 2 odds to win the show.

The 2nd place finishers, Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson, had 11 to 10 odds. Third place went to Laila Ali and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Their odds were 3 to 2.

All odds were according to Bodog, which pretty much nailed the favorites. They layed those numbers when most of the contestants were still in the competition.

Personally, I have to say I'm glad Fatone didn't win. The guy used a light saber during one tango. That should have disqualified him right there on the spot. As it was, his devoted fans have been violently against the decision. At least Laila Ali is used to sports where the judges can rob the contestants, having spent her whole life around boxing. So this is nothing new to her.

Still, I think it would have been cool if Apolo Ohno had dressed up like a hobbit for one routine. That would have shown Joey Fatone and his Jedi mind tricks. Or maybe Ohno could have dressed up like Neo from The Matrix. That would have been kickin' it.
