On Saturday night, a crowd of 16,200 (with many more watching on PPV) watched “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr. and “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya meet in the ring for De La Hoya’s WBC 154-pound title. As many expected, Mayweather used his speed and defensive skills to cruise to a 12-round split decision. The scorecards were 116-112, 115-113 for Mayweather and 115-113 for De La Hoya.

Neither fighter was knocked down, and Mayweather seemed happy to avoid a brawl with the stronger De La Hoya. “I landed the harder, crisper punches,” said The Golden Boy. “If I hadn’t pressed the fight, there would be no fight.”

Ringside punch stats credited Mayweather with landing 207 of 481 punches, while De La Hoya landed 122 of 587. Mayweather also had the advantage in power punches, landing 138 to De La Hoya’s 82.

Mayweather, still unbeaten as a pro, maintained after the fight that he was now going to retire from boxing. He received $10 million for the fight, plus a percentage of the pay-per-view revenue.

De La Hoya received at least $25 million and said after the fight that he would weigh his options. Before the fight, however, he said that he would fight again regardless of the outcome.

Betting was brisk at many online sports books like Bodog. Mayweather was installed as a 2/1 favorite early on, but De La Hoya fans put enough money on their hero to make him a late 3/2 favorite.
