Video Blackjack at the Mohegan Sun

Video blackjack, who would have thought?

Mohegan Sun Casino soon could be featuring 10 blackjack machines near their lobby. These machines will serve up to five blackjack players at once, foregoing the need for a live dealer.

These machines play like a real game of blackjack. The players won't be competing against one another, but against the "dealer". In this case, there is a virtual dealer, with its own hard 17 rules built into the program.

THE SET UP

Actually, these machines could be set to play any number of games. The Mohegan Sun will set them to play blackjack, because it is the only game which are legal on the machine by Connecticut state law.

If it comes to pass, the managers of the Sun think this will be popular with their patrons. Management believes blackjack is perfectly suited for machine play, where the dealer does little more perform an increasingly automated shuffle, deal cards to players and plays a hand based on rigid rules.

Assuming casinos can convince players that the deal is fair, there is nothing standing in the way of an automated blackjack revolution. In an age where more players play at an online casino all the time, trusting a computer to run a fair game becomes less and less of an issue. Networked games seem to be the way of the future.

VIRTUAL DEALERS

With the labor issues cropping up in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, I'm sure this is a bad turn of events for blackjack dealers. Casinos eventually might find a way to get rid of blackjack dealers altogether. Somehow, I'm sure casino managers will find a way to extract a tip from players.

Some players like having a dealer in front of them. Gamblers might even grumble that they don't go to a land-based casino to have a computer deal them cards. Why not stay home and play online, if that's the case?

Newbie players might like having a dealer in front of them to prompt them or correct them on mistakes. But people so disinterested in blackjack that they don't know the rules aren't the players the casino wants to please.

I imagine those who want a quick game of blackjack without any interruptions will look at this as any interesting alternative, at the very least. If the local authorities allow it, Mohegan Sun is going to give the concept a try. Customers might look for these machines near the lobby.
