32nd America's Cup - Bodog Odds

The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sports, predating the modern Olympics by 45 years. This year, Team Alinghi from Switzerland will defend the cup against Emirates Team New Zealand in what should be a highly spirited contest.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Named after the first yacht to win the trophy, the schooner America, the cup was held by the New York Yacht Club from 1852 until 1983, an impressive winning streak of 131 years (the longest in sports history). In 1983, however, the cup was wrested away by Australia II. Since that time, the cup has been held 3 times by the United States and twice by New Zealand.
The America’s Cup is a best-of-nine series between two boats. Any challenger who meets the requirements has the right to challenge the holder of the Cup.
THE 32nd AMERICA’S CUP
In November of 2003, it was announced that Team Alinghi would defend the Cup in Valencia, Spain in 2007. This marks the first time that the Cup has been held in Europe. Since Switzerland is a landlocked country, they held open bidding to see which country would host the event.
The deadline to challenge was set as April 29th, 2005. At that time, 11 challengers from 9 countries had submitted entries.
The challenger selection series for the Louis Vuitton Cup (awarded to the team challenging for the America’s Cup) started in Valencia on April 16th, 2007, and concluded on June 6th after 122 matches. Emirates Team New Zealand won the round robin portion of the contest, then advanced to the semi-finals with Desafio Espanol, Luna Rossa Challenge and BMW Oracle Racing. Since they won the first stage of the tournament, Team New Zealand won the right to select their competition. They chose Desafio Espanol and defeated them 5-2 to advance to the finals. Meanwhile, Luna Rossa Challenge beat BMW Oracle Racing 5 races to 1.
In the finals, Emirates Team New Zealand dominated their competition on the way to a 5-0 thrashing of Luna Rossa Challenge. The stage was now set for the next America’s Cup challenge.
