Cotto vs. Judah - Fight Results

For those of you who didn’t get to see it live, here’s an update on last night’s Zab Judah vs. Miguel Cotto fight.

Judah came out strong and looked to be his usual incredibly fast self, but Cotto hit him with a low blow in the first and the third rounds. After the second foul, Cotto was penalized a point, but his opponent never seemed to recover from the shot. Cotto later stated that the low blows weren‘t intentional.

Cotto took over after the third round, throwing body shot after body shot. Judah suffered a cut to his right eye, but Cotto also sported a badly cut lip which caused blood to drip down onto his chest throughout the slugfest.

In the ninth round, Judah was dropped to a knee after a volley of shots from Cotto. A left hook floored Judah in the eleventh. He managed to get to his feet, but Cotto charged in and battered the former undisputed welterweight champ until referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stopped the bout.

Judah trailed 97-91 on all three scorecards. This was Cotto’s second successful defense of his WBA welterweight belt. He earned $2.5 million plus a piece of the pay-per-view, while Judah got $1 million and a slice of the pay-per-view pie.

The bout will be shown for free this Saturday on HBO along with live coverage of the Lovemore N’Dou vs. Paul Malignaggi fight.

THE UNDERCARD

On the undercard, junior lightweight Humberto Soto set up a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao by beating his brother, Bobby Pacquiao, with a seventh-round knockout. Soto dominated from the opening moments of the match, eventually dispatching Pacquiao with a right hand followed by a hard shot to the body.

In further action, welterweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. got revenge against Grover Wiley, the man who finally forced his legendary father into retirement on September 17th, 2005. Chavez Jr. used the family’s trademark left hook to the body to drop his opponent three times on the way to a third-round knockout.

Junior middleweight Yuri Foreman also won a split decision over Anthony Thompson. Two judges scored the fight 97-93 and 96-94 for Foreman, while the third judge gave it to Thompson, 96-94. It is now expected that Foreman will receive a shot at the 154-pound title held by Sergei Dzindziruk.
