K-1 Dynamite USA - Full Results

Saturday night saw Japanese outfit K-1 present their MMA show entitled Dynamite!! USA. While the first few fights were shown on the Showtime network, the rest of the card was only available on pay-per-view. Held at the massive Coliseum in Los Angeles, the weeks leading up to the fight were plagued by failed physicals, line-up changes, and a general air of uncertainty.
Fortunately, the event did happen, and we have all the results for you. Read on!
RESULTS FOR DYNAMITE USA
J.Z. Calvan vs. Nam Phan - After a takedown and a few punches, this one was quickly stopped at the 26 second mark, and the victory was awarded to Calvan.
Isiah Hill vs. Katsuhiko Nagata - In the first round, Hill made Nagata bleed with some well-placed punches before Nagata took him to the ground and controlled the rest of the round.
The second round saw more of the same, as Nagata used his superior wrestling skills to keep things on the ground.
Hill landed some punches in round 3, but Nagata continued to score takedowns.
Nagata won a split decision (29-28, 28-29, and 30-27).
Jonathan Weizorek vs. Tim Persey - Persey got called for a foul after a low blow. He then knocked his opponent down and did some ground and pound. Weizorek returned the favor later in the round by taking Persey down and beating on his head.
In the second round, Wiezorek took him down and Persey gave up his back. Weizorek rained down punches on his opponent and finally forced the ref to stop the fight. Weizorek got the win.
Ido Pariente vs. Jake Shields - Shields quickly took down Pariente, got his back, and made him tap out to a choke at the 2 minute mark. Shields looked very strong.
For some reason, there was over a 50 minute delay before the next fight. In the interim, Dennis Rodman was paraded out like an attention-starved clown. The crowd didn't seem pleased to see him. By the way, the announcers for the event were Bill Goldberg, Jay Glazer and Mauro Ranallo.
Johnnie Morton vs. Bernard Ackah - Morton, the former receiver for the Detroit Lions, came right out and tried for a takedown. He got it, but Ackah quickly got to his feet. A rapid exchange of punches followed, and Morton was hit with a big punch to the jaw. He was knocked out at the 38 second mark and had to be carried out on a stretcher.
To make matters even worse, he refused to submit a urine sample after the fight. At last report, officials were going to hold up his payment of $100,000. Talk about a bad night.
Mighty Mo vs. Warpath Villareal - Almost immediately, Mo hit him with a big punch and cut him under the left eye. Fearing a break in the orbital bone, the referee quickly stopped the match and awarded the win to Mighty Mo.
Melvin Manhoef vs. Yoon Dong Sik - Manhoef nearly put his opponent away in the first minute with punches, but Yoon came back later in the round and took his fading opponent to the mat. There, he hammered him with punches and tried for a series of armbars.
In the second round, Yoon took his opponent down, got his back and locked in an armbar for the submission. Lucky for him, as Yoon's right eye was swollen shut and might have caused the fight to be stopped at any moment.
The crowd was really into this one, and most rated it the fight of the night.
Hideo Tokoro vs. Brad Pickett - Tokoro was a submission machine, trying for one after another. Halfway through the first round, he finally got an armbar and forced Pickett to tap. This was a very nice example of what submission wrestling should look like.
Royce Gracie vs. Kazushi Sakuraba - Boring fight. Gracie spent most of the fight on his back and throwing kicks at the standing Sakuraba. The crowd booed from time to time, which is never good for your co-main event.
After three rounds of mind-numbing inactivity, the scores were 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Royce Gracie. Sakuraba looked especially hesitant and needs to retire before he suffers permanent damage against a striker.
Lots of people were heading to the exits at this point. Another bad sign, since there's still one match to go.
Brock Lesnar vs. Kim Min-soo - Lesnar came out and took him down immediately. He threw a few punches and then easily transitioned into a full mount. Once there, the former WWE champ started beating Min-soo silly, forcing him to tap out at 1:09 of the match due to punches.
While there were some big knockouts, the production of this event was horrible. Somehow, I doubt K-1 will be having an American event for a while (if ever). Lesnar did look impressive, however, and the juggernaut known as the UFC would be wise to sign him to a contract, feed him a few lesser fighter, and then let him challenge for the title. Without a doubt, he's far more marketable that Gabriel Gonzaga.
