When it comes to colorful characters, it’s pretty hard to top Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. We’re talking about a man who has survived an assassination attempt (but was paralyzed below the waist in the process), won landmark obscenity-related Supreme Court cases, and even placed 7th out of a field of 135 candidates in the 2003 California election for governor - all the while publishing quality smut for the masses.

Flynt is once again making headlines after he took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post on Sunday, June 3rd. The ad inquired:

“Have you had a sexual encounter with a current member of the United States Congress or a high-ranking government official?

Can you provide documented evidence of illicit sexual or intimate relations with a Congressperson, Senator or other prominent officeholder?

Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine will pay you up to $1 million if we choose to publish your verified story and use your material.”

BODOG GETS IN ON THE ACT

Actually, this isn’t the first time that the self-professed “smut peddler who cares” has made such an offer. During the 1998 impeachment proceedings against President Clinton, he offered a million bucks for evidence about sexual affairs involving Republican lawmakers. His findings were published in a magazine entitled, appropriately enough, The Flynt Report. The investigation eventually led to the resignation of incoming Speaker of the House Bob Livingston, although nobody was able to claim the cash reward.

This time around, Bodog has opted to get in on the action by offering odds on Flynt’s rather unusual proposition. To be considered a winning bet, Larry Flynt must pay $1 million for and publish a scandalous photo of a U.S. government official by December 31st, 2007. The maximum bet is $50.
