Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest - Bodog Has Odds

Each Fourth of July, 20 determined competitors gather behind a 40-foot table and engage in a grueling 12-minute contest. They are known as gurgitators. The event is known as the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.

According to archives, the event has occurred every 4th in Coney Island, New York since 1916. Every year, thousands gather to watch men like Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut stuff their faces with hot dogs. Last year, 1.5 million households tuned in to watch ESPN’s live coverage of the event.

A BRIEF HISTORY

1993 saw the Mustard-Yellow International Belt returned to U.S. soil after American Mike Devito defeated Japanese eating master Orio Ito in a one-on-one grudge match. Prior to that, the belt has resided in Japan for seven years.

Unfortunately for American fans, the belt returned to Japan and has resided in a display case in Saitama for the last six years thanks to master muncher Takeru Kobayashi. In 2006, 30,000 fans turned up in Coney Island to witness the clash between Kobayashi and his rival Joey Chestnut. Chestnut ate an amazing 52 Nathan’s Hot Dogs and Buns in the 12-minute contest, but Kobayashi retained the belt by scarfing down 53.75.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

A qualifying circuit started on March 24th in Sunrise, Florida and has been held in Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia, PA, Las Vegas, NV, Atlanta, GA and Tokyo, Japan. The winner of each qualifying round will have the right to compete in the finals on Independence Day.

Will Kobayashi win for a seventh straight year, or will an American competitor like Joey Chestnut or Chicago’s Patrick Bertoletti bring the belt back home? Luckily, our friends at Bodog are providing odds on the event for those who want to really show their support.
