UFC 72 MAIN CARD
Scott Smith vs. Ed Herman - The crowd was really up for this fight, as both men worked hard to deliver the goods. Smith got busted up badly from an elbow to the nose, but he also got his opponent in a heel hook and looked to close the show. Herman reversed, but then Smith managed to reverse again. Back and forth action, with the edge going to Ed Herman.
Herman went right for a takedown to start Round Two, but he got caught in a guillotine choke. Herman escaped and threw elbows from the top. Smith gave up his back and Herman forced him to submit with a rear naked choke.
Tyson Griffin vs. Clay Guida - Guida went for takedown after takedown, but Griffin showed off his superior balance by staying on his feet. There was no doubt that Griffin was the better fighter in the stand-up.
The 2nd round saw a great display of holds and escapes, as both men worked hard. Guida luckily blocked a German suplex attempt, and he came right back with a kneebar. Griffin escaped and went for a heel hook, and then Guida almost locked in choke to end the round. Most seemed to think that Guida won the round.
Round 3 continued the fast pace, and Guida seemed to be in control for much of the round. Griffin got in some solid work from the bottom, but Guida finished the round well with lots of punches from the top. The decision is going to be a close one.
The scores were 29-28 Griffin, 28-29 Guida, and 29-28 Griffin. Tyson Griffin won by split decision. The crowd booed the decision and seemed really behind Guida after the loss.
After the fight, it was announced that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will take on Dan “Hollywood” Henderson on September 9th in London.
Jason MacDonald vs. Rory Singer - Singer dominated the round, landing punches and knees and bloodying MacDonald up.
In Round Two, MacDonald got the takedown and rained down punches. MacDonald was in the guard, but he expertly applied the can opener maneuver, escaped the guard, and then started beating on Singer from the mount. After about a dozen blows, the ref stepped in and awarded the victory to Jason MacDonald.
Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez - Griffin was very popular coming out. In fact, the Belfast crowd seemed to go nuts for everything he did in the first round. It was a close contest, as Ramirez looked to have the better punching ability, while Griffin landed lots of low kicks and showed superior movement in the Octagon.
In Round Two, the low kicks seemed to take their toll on Ramirez. He appeared to tire later in the round, and Griffin connected with several flurries. Griffin clearly won the round.
Round Three was all Forrest Griffin. He landed punches, kicks and knees to an exhausted Ramirez.
The scorecards had to fight straight 30-27 for Griffin. A very impressive performance for Forrest, and it was a win that he definitely needed.
Rich Franklin vs. Yushin Okami - Not much happened in Round One. Both men mostly seemed to be feeling out their opponent.
In Round Two, Franklin was a little busier, but Okami didn’t do much of anything. Some of the crowd were booing in Round Two.
Okami came to life in Round Three, taking Franklin down with a leg trip and going for several submissions. Franklin managed to escape, but Okami certainly seemed to win the round.
The scorecards had it 29-28 across the board for Rich Franklin. Afterwards, is was announced that Franklin would get a shot at the winner of the UFC 73 showdown between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Nathan Marquardt.
