2007 WSOP Main Event - Day 1A Recap

The Main Event of the 2007 World Series of Poker is now officially underway. Day 1A started with 1,287 players, larger than the total number of entrants in any year prior to Chris Moneymaker’s win. The Day 1A group featured suck players as Bobby Baldwin, Huck Seed, Amarillo Slim Preston, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan.
THINNING THE HERD
As the day came to an end, only 450 players were left standing after nearly 16 hours of play.
Matt Jansen became the first player eliminated, as his pocket aces fell to George Dolorfan’s flush. He had lots of company, as other Day 1A bustouts included Andy Black, Michael Mizrachi, Terrence Chan, Dewey Tomko and Marco Traniello.
Phil Hellmuth’s record of 11 bracelets will stand until next year, as both Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan were eliminated on Day 1A. Brunson went all-in with an A-Q after the flop came A-Q-6. Unfortunately, his opponent was holding a pair of queens.
Johnny Chan had an A-K, but he was sent to the rail after his opponent revealed trip tens.
CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS
There were lots of celebrities entered in the tourney, as actors like Tobey Maguire, Brad Garrett and Ray Romano looked to win big. Romano was eliminated after his pair of queens ran into pocket aces, but Garrett survived the first day and picked up an extra $2,000 in a side bet with Romano over who could last the longest.
COURT JESTER
Jeff Madsen played the entire first day dressed as a court jester due to losing a bet with Joe Sebok and Gavin Smith. He was still able to make it through the first day, but there’s been no word on whether or not he’ll have to don the costume for a second day.
