2007 WSOP Main Event - Final Results

The 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event is in the books, and Jerry Yang is the latest bracelet winner. He’ll take home $8.25 million, plus even more from future endorsement deals. Amazingly, the father of six referred to himself as a “very, very part-time player.”

A BLISTERING PACE
As the final table got started at noon on Tuesday, it took less than two hours before chip leader Philip Hilm was sent to the rail by the aggressive play of Yang. Then, in rapid succession, Yang eliminated Lee Watkinson, Lee Childs and Hevad Khan.

At this point, only five players remained:

Jerry Yang $73,040,000

Tuan Lam $19,915,000

Raymond Rahme $15,955,000

Jon Kalmar $13,405,000

Alex Kravchenko $5,170,000

At this point, Yang lost a few hands and became cautious for a time. Meanwhile, Raymond Rahme eliminated Jon Kalmar in the late afternoon, and the four remaining players stuck around until well after midnight.

THE WEE SMALL HOURS

Around 1 a.m., after more than 100 hands of play, Alex Kravchenko went all-in against Yang with an ace and king. He got no help on the flop, and Yang revealed three eights to eliminate another player.

Yang didn’t take long to marvel at his good fortune, however, as he eliminated another player just a few hands later. Raymond Rahme’s pocket kings fell to Yang’s two aces. Rahme received $3 for the third place finish.

HEAD TO HEAD

It all came down to Jerry Yang (a 9/1 favorite according to Bodog) and Tuan Lam, both Asian-born immigrants. The two dueled for around 30 hands until Yang finally overwhelmed his opponent with aggressive play and a superior chip stack. Tuan received $4.8 million for the second place finish.

ABOUT JERRY YANG

The 39-year-old Yang was born in Communist Laos and escaped from there when he was a child. He played cards to pass the time in a Thai refugee camp. He didn’t begin to learn English until he was 13 years old, but he now works as a social worker and psychologist. Oh, and he just started playing poker two years ago.

He won his way into the tournament via a $225 buy-in satellite event in California.

For anyone who thinks the American dream is dead, all you have to do is take one look at Jerry Yang.
