Arena Bowl XXI Results

On Sunday, New Orleans hosted Arena Bowl XXI, with the San Jose SaberCats taking on the Columbus Destroyers. It was the first championship game of any sort to be held in The Big Easy since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, and it was sold out weeks in advance (17,056 tickets purchased).
CLASH OF THE TITANS
Both teams entered the game with loads of momentum. The SaberCats were the number one seed coming into the playoffs, and the Destroyers had staged several upsets to get to the championship game. San Jose had averaged 63.2 points a game, while Columbus averaged 50.1 during the regular season and cranked it up to 63 points in the post-season.
According to sportsbooks like Bodog, the SaberCats were the favorites heading into the game against the 10-9 Destroyers. A win for Columbus would no doubt rank as one of the greatest Arena Bowl upsets of all time.
ARENA BOWL XXI
In the end, the SaberCats proved too much for their competition, defeating the Destroyers by a score of 55 to 33. In the process, the SaberCats captured their third Arena League title in six years.
While the Destroyers defense held San Jose to their lowest total of the playoffs, the SaberCats D responded by holding Columbus to 30 points less than their post-season average.
SaberCats QB Mark Grieb was named the game’s MVP, as he passed for 218 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.
