Arturo Gatti vs. Alfonso Gomez - Fight Results

Arturo “Thunder” Gatti is officially retired thanks to Alfonso Gomez and his rugged performance on Saturday night.
Gomez, a first-season contestant on The Contender punished Gatti throughout the fight before stopping him with a big right hand in the 7th round of their welterweight fight at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Gatti, the slugger with throwback features and a throwback style, has now suffered his third KO loss in the last four fights. He announced his retirement from his dressing room after the fight.
“I’m coming back -- as a spectator,” said the 35-year-old Gatti.
Gomez used his brawling style to batter Gatti around the ring, and he was leading on all three scorecards when the knockout came (60-54, 58-56 and 58-56). In the seventh, Gomez threw about 20 unanswered punches with many of them hitting home. When he was finally dropped, Larry Hazzard, head of the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, climbed into the ring and personally stopped the match at the 2:12 mark.
According to the odds on Bodog, Gatti was a -205 favorite coming into the fight, and Gomez was a +165 underdog. Looks like a few smart bettors out there made some extra scratch.
ROY JONES JR. WINS
Also on Saturday night, former pound-for-pound best Roy Jones Jr. won a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Anthony Hanshaw. The 38-year-old Jones won on the scorecards 114-113, 117-110 and 118-109. In the process, he won the vacant IBC Light Heavyweight title.
KERMIT CINTRON DOMINATES
Kermit Cintron smoked mandatory contender Walter Matthysse with a brutal second round KO to retain his Welterweight belt. If you haven’t seen the knockout, search around for it on the Internet. It’s worth a look.
