Fantasy Football - Top 10 News Items

It’s a great time to be a fantasy football fan, as training camps are now underway. While it’s time to gauge the rookie class and watch out for key positional battles, it’s also the time where we watch a couple of name players go down with injuries (which has already happened - see below).

Since you may already be drafting for a league, or at the very least participating in a mock draft, I’ve compiled the 10 biggest recent bits of fantasy football news to help you make a more informed decision. Enjoy.

TOP 10 FANTASY FOOTBALL NEWS

1. Vikings RB Chester Taylor left practice today with an apparent right arm injury. It may be nothing, but those thinking of drafting rookie RB Adrian Peterson might watch this one closely.

2. For those of you who draft who individual defensive players, keep an eye on the Greg Ellis (Cowboys LB) situation. He wants a new contract and claims that retirement is an option if he doesn’t get it. That’s pretty dumb logic, if you ask me.

3. Giants DL Michael Strahan is considering retirement. According to a teammate, “It’s still 50-50 whether he is going to come back.” After a nasty divorce, many believe this is just a ploy by the gap-toothed Strahan to get more money. The team, however, is moving on and may sign Simeon Rice to replace him.

4. The Oakland Raiders worked out free agent QB Daunte Culpepper today, and the latest reports indicate that they will sign him. While JaMarcus Russell holds out, Culpepper would compete with Josh McCown and Andrew Walter.

5. Patriots RB Laurence Maroney continues to practice with a red no-contact jersey. Keep an eye on this one, as Maroney is still recovering from a shoulder injury.

6. Niners RB Frank Gore broke his hand yesterday during practice. The bone will take a month to heal, and Gore is expected to miss a week of practice and possibly a few preseason games.

7. In case you missed it, Warrick Dunn underwent back surgery last week and will not be ready for the start of the season. Since Jerious Norwood was going to get more carries this year anyway, this could spell the end of Dunn’s starting role with the Falcons.

8. The Steelers new offensive coordinator doesn’t like to rotate runners, so there is speculation that Willie Parker will be used as an every down back. That’s great news for fantasy owners.

9. Patriots CB Chad Scott has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury. His season is officially over.

10. Packers RB Vernand Morency will miss a couple of weeks after suffering a knee injury. This is a great opportunity for rookie RB Brandon Jackson, but word out of Packers camp is that Jackson has failed to establish himself.
