The Return of PONG!

Pong was the first video game to achieve widespread popularity both in video arcades and on the home console versions. Now it’s time for a comeback.
Bally Technologies is trying to get approval for Pong slot machine. The idea is that a player’s skill at the game would help determine the overall payout.
PASSING INSPECTION
But wouldn’t this tend to cancel out the random nature of slots? This question has already been debated by the state Gaming Control Board, which ruled that slots must have an element of randomness in their basic game. Since the Pong game is only relevant during the bonus round, it is considered acceptable, and the panel gave a thumbs up to the game and shuffled it over to the Nevada Gaming Commission where it will await final approval.
If the game is approved, it could start a wave of skill-based games which capitalize on old video games. Really, if they make a Pong game, can Asteroids and Frogger be far behind?
HOW THE GAME WORKS
It plays very much like a 5-reel video slot, but Pong logos are also featured on the reels. Line up three in a row and you’ll find that the bonus round has been activated. At this stage, the player engages in a 45-second game of Pong with the machine. The better the player does, the more money he or she will win.
The Gaming Control Board required that a minimum amount had to be paid out if a player reached the bonus round. It has since been learned that the difference between doing well in the bonus round and stinking up the joint amount to only a 7 percent difference in the amount of payout.
This Thursday, the Nevada Gaming Commission is expected to meet and make a decision on the Pong machine. If approved, Bally could then engage in lab and field testing for the product. After that, it’s all gravy.
