Tour de France Results

The 2007 Tour de France wrapped up this weekend, and Spain’s Alberto Contador (riding for America’s Discovery Channel Team) won the right to wear the bright yellow jersey of the event’s champion. He seemed destined to finish in 2nd place behind leader Michael Rasmussen until his team, Rabobank, accused him of evading doping controls and pulled him from the tournament.

The win was the second closest in the Tour’s 104-year history, as Contador won by just 23 seconds over Australia’s Cadel Evans. Still, there was plenty of praise for Contador, and cycling legend Lance Armstrong called him, “the future of Spanish cycling and perhaps international cycling.”

A BRUSH WITH DEATH

Contador called the win a “dream come true.” This was especially true considering that he nearly suffered permanent brain damage after suffering an aneurism during a race in 2004. He was rushed to the hospital and surgery was performed within hours. While there, he drew inspiration from reading a book about Armstrong. He still has a large scar down the side of his head to remind him of the near-fatal event.
