UFC 73: Stacked - Full Results

On Saturday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship held their latest event, which was entitled UFC 73: Stacked. The event was held at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, and it was one of the strongest cards in the company’s history. Let’s take a look at the results.

UFC 73 RESULTS

The Undercard

Frank Edgar vs. Mark Bocek - Edgar was dominant through the round. He showed better striking skills and was able to get the top position when the fight went to the ground. Bocek got rocked early and never fully recovered. Edgar eventually got his back and started raining down punches. The ref stopped the fight at 4:55.

Chris Lytle vs. Jason Gilliam

Lytle got on top and threw punches. Gilliam reversed, but Lytle went for an ankle lock. Lytle got side control and locked in both a reverse triangle choke and wristlock. Gilliam passed out at the 2:15 mark.

Jorge Gurgel vs. Diego Saraiva

Back and forth fight with both men working hard throughout. Gurgel, however, was the dominant force throughout and was busier. The judges certainly thought so, as they gave him straight 30-27 scores. The crowd booed and numerous points, verifying that most UFC crowds are comprised of morons.

Stephen Bonnar vs. Mike Nickels - After an initial scramble, Bonner got his back and worked for a choke. Nickels escaped, but Bonnar went for another choke and landed this one. Nickels tapped at 2:14.

Main Card

Minotauro Nogueira vs. Heath Herring - Nog looked strong in the early goings, but Herring caught him with a kick to the head and put him down (this is what happens when you fight someone for the third time). Herring tried to finish but Nog recovered. After that, Nog seemed a little leery and preferred to take the fight to the ground and go for submissions. Herring proved difficult to submit, however, and this one went to the judge’s cards. Nog won 29-28 across the board. Not the impressive performance that UFC officials were hoping for.

Sean Sherk (Lightweight champ) vs. Hermes Franca - Franca looked to stand and trade, but Sherk took it to the ground at every opportunity. This continued for 5 full rounds, with Sherk working the Ground and Pound strategy. France got his licks in, but The Muscle Shark looked stronger. The crowd was really restless for this one, since a lot of the action was on the ground. The final scores were 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46, all for the defending champ, Sherk.

Tito Ortiz vs. Rashad Evans - Crowd was really wild for this one, and Ortiz got his usual mixed reaction. Tito Ortiz looked to take the fight to the ground, while Evans seemed to want to beat Tito’s head in. At some point in the fight, Ortiz had a point taken away for grabbing the cage to avoid a takedown. This directly affected the outcome, as it ended up being a 28-28 draw. There’s no doubt that this one will have a rematch.

Anderson Silva (Middleweight champ) vs. Nathan Marquardt - Silva rocked him early, but Marquardt took him to the ground. After nothing much happening, John McCarthy stood them back up. Silva got a takedown and started landing punches from the top. The ref stopped it and awarded Silva with the win.

Kenny Florian vs. Alvin Robinson - Florian dominated with takedowns, eventually moving into a full mount and landing with punches and elbows. It was stopped late in round one, and Florian picked up another win and called out Sean Sherk.
