Evander Holyfield vs. Lou Savarese - Fight Results

In his latest bid for a comeback, Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield took on Lou Savarese Saturday night in El Paso, Texas. While many critics doubt his ability to compete at the highest levels of the sport, Holyfield was sharp enough last night to capture a 10-round decision (98-90, 99-87, 96-91).

The 44-year-old ex-champ knocked Savarese down twice, although he had managed to hold his own for the first eight rounds. Holyfield improved to 42-8-2 with the win, and Savarese dropped to 46-7. Afterwards, Savarese said that this would be his last fight.

“I fought hard. I gave it my all,” said a disappointed and swollen Savarese.

THE COMEBACK TRAIL

This was Holyfield’s fourth bout since making a return to boxing following a two-year absence. He has consistently maintained that his goal is to win an record-setting fifth heavyweight title, unify the belts, and then retire from the sport for good. But he is also just three years removed from having his license revoked in the state of New York after an ugly decision loss to Larry Donald.

Still, Holyfield remains confident. “I will be the five-time undisputed heavyweight champion of the world,” he said after the fight.

A TITLE SHOT IN THE WORKS?

Ever the optimist, Holyfield claimed that he believes a title shot will be next for him. But before you scoff, keep in mind that one of the myriad of Russian champs, Sultan Ibragimov, has already expressed interest in fighting “The Real Deal.” Even though he’s a shell of his former self, it’s still likely that Holyfield possesses more drawing power than all of the Russian champions combined.

BODOG BETTING

Bodog had Holyfield a -700 favorite going into the fight. Needless to say, that was hardly a wager worth making. Maybe the odds will be better when he fights someone under 40 years of age.

Jorge Masvidal vs. Yves Edwards (Lightweight)

James Binky Jones vs. Nick Agallar (Lightweight)

MAIN EVENT

Eddie Alvarez vs. Matt Lee

ALVAREZ VS. LEE

Eddie Alvarez (9-1) will be looking to get back on track after losing his welterweight title to Nick “The Goat” Thompson last April. He’ll be taking on Matt Lee (9-5-1), the man who defeated Alvarez’s trainer, Stephen Haigh, last year.

“I beat the teacher, now I’m going to beat up on the student,” said Lee. Of course, Alvarez begs to differ.

“First, I’m going to even the score on behalf of my coach, “said Alvarez. “Second, I’m going to put on a show for all my fans up from Philly. Last, but not least, beating Matt is going to put me a step closer to winning back my championship belt.”

D’AUGUSTE VS. LaROSA

In exciting female MMA action, Laura D’Auguste will try to capture the women’s 135-pound championship belt. But she’s in for a tough fight, as she’ll be taking on New Jersey’s own Tara LaRosa.

“It’s going to be a huge thrill fighting for the title in front of my home fans, and I look forward to hearing them cheer when my arm is raised after the fight,” said LaRosa.

PRANGLEY VS. KONDO

Trevor Prangley (14-4) will also be taking on Japanese legend Yuki Kondo (46-19-6) for the middleweight title. Kondo’s list of opponents reads like a who’s who of the sport, including Tito Ortiz, Wanderlei Silva, Josh Barnett and Dan Henderson. He is also a veteran of the Pancrase organization.

“Trevor is tough, but I’ve fought some of the best fighters in the world, and I believe my experience will serve me well in this fight,” said a confident Kondo.

Not surprisingly, the South African Prangley sees things differently.

“I’m in fantastic shape, and I’m looking forward to putting on a show for the fans in New Jersey,” stated Prangley. “It’s every fighter’s goal to win a title belt, and I won’t let Yuki Kondo stand in my way.”

While Bodog has no odds listed at the moment, you can bet your ass that they will as the fight date gets closer. In the meantime, you can check out some more MMA articles at:

Japan to Legalize Casinos?

If you’ve ever visited Japan but been disappointed by their lack of casinos, you may want to start planning a trip for the future. It appears as though the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan is now considering legalizing casino gambling as early as June 2008.

A BIG BOOST

Not only is the Liberal Democratic Party the leading party of the country, but they also believe that casinos will increase tourism and tax revenues, and generally help to boost the economy. It will also give foreign investors a chance to get in on the ground floor, since Japanese companies may not be ready to take on such a massive operation.

It is estimated that just three major casinos could generate up to 4.3 billion Euros for the nation’s treasury, not to mention the number of jobs that it would generate. And since Japan has recently faced a decline in population and tax revenues, they need all the economic stimulation that they can get.

IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ‘EM…

By bringing in casinos, Japan would be following the model successfully adopted by places like Macau and Singapore. Macau has been so successful, in fact, that it now outstrips Las Vegas as the world’s most popular gambling destination.

And with Russia and China experiencing large economic growth, there’s even the possibility of drawing large crowds of gambling enthusiasts from these nations. If so, revenue for the casinos could be even greater than initially projected.

To discourage locals from gambling, however, the government might also consider charging an entrance fee.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

And while I’m thinking about it, here are 3 really cool things to come out of Japan:

1. Starblazers - The animated Japanese film turned American cartoon series. It still has about the coolest opening theme of all time. Hurry, Starforce!

2. Battle Royale - The movie deals with a group of teenage classmates who are placed on an island and forced to fight to the death at the behest of the Japanese government. Highly controversial and highly entertaining. Nobody does crazy like the Japanese.

3. Ninja Warrior - If you haven’t seen this wacky Japanese television show, check it out on the G4 channel. Brave men and women take on a treacherous obstacle course for the amusement of the public.

Evander Holyfield vs. Lou Savarese - Fight Preview and Bodog Odds

On Saturday, June 30th, four-time heavyweight champ Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield will take on Lou Savarese at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. It is being billed as The Road to the Heavyweight Championship.

The fight will be shown on pay-per-view, which is a real shame considering that both these fighters are well past their prime. No doubt, viewers will be asked to shell out upwards of $30 to $40 for a boring fight in the wrecked heavyweight division. It’s this sort of blind greed which has helped reduce boxing to its current state.

But before I go off on a long rant, let’s take a look at both of the fighters and then see what kind of odds they’re getting.

EVANDER HOLYFIELD

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Evander Holyfield has a record of 41-8-2 with 27 KO’s. He is 44 years old, stands 6’2 ½” and weighs 218 pounds. He is a former WBA, WBC and IBF cruiserweight champion, as well as the former holder of the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles. Ring Magazine selected him as Fighter of the Year for 1996-1997.

Holyfield has fought numerous wars over his career, including three tough fights with Riddick Bowe and a pair of bouts with Mike Tyson. During his career, he’s fought everyone from Lennox Lewis to James Toney. He’s always fought the best, but his competition lately has been a step down. We’re talking fighters like Vinny Madalone and Fres Oquendo.

Also keep in mind that all of Holyfield’s recent fights have taken place in Texas. This is because most other states will no longer grant him a license to compete in the sport.

Strengths

Holyfield is still strong at 44 and can close the show with the best of him. He’s very dangerous inside, and he’s a master at using his head as a weapon to stun or cut opponents. His left hook is particularly effective. Even if everyone else has given up on him, Holyfield truly believes that he will once again be a world champion. This burning desire makes him very dangerous despite his eroding skills.

Weaknesses

Holyfield turned pro back in 1984, and he doesn’t have much tread left on the tires. In fact, some might say that he’s been running on the rims for several years. Most of those close to him are urging him to retire, but he seems intent on getting permanent brain damage. The major states for the sport of boxing will no longer grant him a license to fight. That should have been his first clue that something’s wrong.

LOU SAVARESE

Savarese is from Houston, Texas and has a record of 48-6 with 36 KO’s. He is 41 years old, 6’5” and 249 pounds. While he has held a couple of minor heavyweight belts, he has never won a major title.

While he has fought George Foreman, Mike Tyson and Michael Grant, Savarese has usually lost when faced with quality opposition. In fact, the bulk of his wins were strung together by beating men like Larry Givens, who retired from boxing with a record of 3-46. He has won his last 3 fights, but his opponents were once again suspect.

Strengths

Savarese still has power in his big right hand, so he’s still dangerous. He’s got a puncher’s chance, but that’s about it. Oh, and he usually comes to his fights in excellent condition.

Weaknesses

Savarese is slow and lacks defense. While his chin has usually been pretty durable, it usually just means that he’ll stay in a fight long enough to absorb more punishment than is advisable. His level of competition has been very low for years, and he’s past the 40-year mark.

BODOG ODDS

So what does Bodog have to say about each fighter’s chances? Let’s take a look. Keep in mind that the maximum bet is $500.

Winner of the Fight

Evander Holyfield -700

Lou Savarese +400

Over/Under for the Fight

Over 9 ½ Rounds -110

Under 9 ½ Rounds -130

PREDICTION

Look for Holyfield to get inside and use his head to open up Savarese. As his visibility becomes impaired from the blood, Savarese will eat big punch after big punch until he goes down in the 6th and doesn’t get back up. Holyfield by KO in Round 6.

Fantasy Baseball - fantasysportslive.com - Daily Sports Bets

I love fantasy sports.

Fantasy football and fantasy baseball are great ways to bet on your favorite sports. You keep in touch with old buddies and make new sports friends.

The problem many gamblers have with fantasy sports, though, is these wagers play out over an entire year. Making one single wager on a full season may not be enough juice for a hardcore gambler.

Also, fantasy baseball is a lot of work. You have to manage a fantasy team throughout an entire 162 game season, changing the starting lineup, making trades to plug holes and keeping track of the breakout players to add to your roster. One bet...six months of baseball...equals a lot of work.

But that's a thing of the past.

FANTASY SPORTS DOT COM

I've found a site where you can make daily wagers on fantasy sports. You can find it at fantasysportslive.com.

Every day, the bets reset. Pay to make a wager on the games that night. You fill out a starting lineup from the players playing in the games scheduled that night. If you place first, second or third on the wager, you make a lot of money.

fantasysportslive.com combines fantasy baseball with your standard sports betting. The great thing about fantasy betting is it's completely legal. Because the uigea created a carveout for fantasy sports, your bets on these games are legal. You can even pay through Paypal.

The game itself has another built-in advantage over regular baseball wagering. You aren't betting against a line set up by a Las Vegas expert. You are betting against a collection of guys, 1 to 9 players according to the game you choose. These guys aren't experts, but fans like you. So if you have a skill for picking fantasy match ups, you can rake in the money.

HOW FANTASY BASEBALL IS PLAYED

When you join a contest, you fill out a nine man roster. So you choose a pitcher and a position player from each of the positions. This is your baseball team for the night.

The position players receive points for hits, steals, runs, home runs and RBI's. The pitchers receive points for strikeouts and innings pitched, and ten points for a win.

Points are deducted for batter strike outs, losses for pitchers and those kind of negative stats.

THE SALARY CAP

Also, you can choose contests with a salary cap or no salary cap. A salary cap means you have a certain amount of monopoly money to buy players. Standard caps are $450,000 or $550,000, while players cost between $10,000 and $100,000 apiece. Their cost depends on past stats and match ups.

Right now, Alex Rodriguez is going for $170,000, though he is about the only player over 100 thousand I've seen.

I like the salary cap. I think that's the way you can separate yourself from the other players, by adding a couple of bargain sleepers to your roster, allowing you to afford Barry Bonds when other teams cannot.

And if you don't like all that salary cap mess, you don't have to. Either way, you fill out a roster of your favorite players. If they let you down one night, you get an entirely new group of players tomorrow night.

Try out this site. It's one of the first of its kind on the internet, but this is only going to get bigger.

Playboy to Open Mansion in Macau

It looks like things are going to get even hotter in Asia, as Playboy has just announced its intentions to open the 40,000 square foot Playboy Mansion Macau. This follows on the heels of the opening of a Playboy club at the Palms Resort in Las Vegas in October.

The new mansion, scheduled to open in late 2009, will feature a pool and grotto, dozens of gaming tables, a villa-style hotel and even female dealers dressed in revealing “bunny” outfits. It is expected to be twice the size of the Las Vegas club.

MACAU…THE NEW VEGAS

Playboy is no doubt hoping to take advantage of the boom in the Macau gambling industry. Since the government ended a monopoly in 2002, it has went on to surpass even Las Vegas as the world’s biggest gaming market.

And Playboy already has a presence in Asia. They sell clothing in 620 outlets in China and run boutiques in both Tokyo and Bangkok.

Playboy Mansion Macau will be part of a planned $2 billion Macau Studio City, which will be a 3.7 million square foot complex combining malls, hotels, casinos, movie sets and television studios.

PLAYBOY IN TROUBLE?

Playboy is looking for a shot in the arm after reporting financial losses in 2005 and only $2.3 million in profit for 2006. With the continued growth of the adult entertainment industry, their traditional businesses such as magazines and video sales have struggled. In this way, they look to regain ground.

It also marks a return to the roots of the company. Back in the day, Playboy ran successful clubs in 22 cities such as Tokyo, Chicago, Manila and New York. But by 1991, all the facilities had closed, and the company concentrated on other business ventures.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

I would love nothing more than to see this new business venture become an overwhelming success for Playboy. Maybe then they would consider opening the old Playboy Clubs back up. I’m far too young to remember them, but I’ve seen programs on television about the heyday of the Playboy empire. Just imagine a club with beautiful women dancing, cocktail waitresses in bunny outfits, cool music, cigars, and anything else a manly man could wish for. Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

2007 Tour de France - Bodog Odds

The 2007 Tour de France will begin on July 7th and last until July 29th. It’s the world’s best known cycling race, a fact which has been greatly aided by Lance Armstrong’s seven consecutive wins. This year’s event will begin in London and then make its way into France. Broken into stages (from one town to the next), the cyclist with the best cumulative time will be crowned the winner.

CONTROVERSY

Last year’s winner, Floyd Landis, tested for unusually high levels of testosterone and is not considered the champion by Tour officials. However, he is still listed as the winner and is currently involved in a campaign to maintain his innocence.

Charges of doping have plagued the event in recent years. Due to this fact, the Tour de France will now be requiring riders to sign a new anti-doping charter. Anyone who refuses will not be allowed to participate. The charter states that a cyclist who tests positive for drug use will pay a year’s salary on top of the standard two-year ban.

BODOG ODDS

So who’s going to win this year’s event? Will it be Russian cyclist Vladimir Karpets, who recently captured the Tour of Switzerland race, or will another American rise up to piss off the Europeans? Thankfully, Bodog has provided odds for the upcoming race. There are no parlays, and the maximum bet is $500.

Paris Hilton's Interview with Larry King - Bodog Odds

There are two events which mankind awaits with bated breath - the second coming of Jesus Christ and the release of Paris Hilton from jail. One of those happens on Tuesday (I’ll let you guess which one).

The hotel heiress has been serving a highly-publicized 45-day sentence for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. Of course, due to overcrowding and good behavior, she’ll only end up serving 24 days in all.

MY NAME IS KING….LARRY KING

One day after her release, Paris will appearing on CNN’s Larry King Live to talk about her experiences in the slammer. The entire hour of the show will be dedicated to everyone’s favorite party girl.

In an official statement, Hilton said, “I am thrilled that Larry King has asked me to appear on his program to discuss my experience in jail, what I have learned, how I have grown and anything else he wants to talk about. Larry King is not only a world-renowned journalist, but a true American icon. It will be an honor to do his show.”

Excuse me while I go throw up. Isn’t the host of the show the one who’s supposed to do the ass-kissing? Not to worry, though, as Larry will be doing plenty of that on Wednesday night.

BODOG ODDS

Never ones to miss out on a pop culture event, Bodog is taking odds on several possible occurrences during the Larry King interview. These wagers will not be settled until official transcripts of the show are released, and the maximum bet for each is $50.

Ricky Hatton vs. Jose Luis Castillo - Fight Results

On Saturday night, Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton took on Jose Luis Castillo for the IBO junior welterweight title and vacant WBC International 140-pound belt.

RESULTS FOR HATTON VS. CASTILLO

In the early going, both men looked ready for a war. The two fighters looked to get inside, and each man unloaded with every punch in his arsenal. The 4th round, however, would prove to be a critical point in the match.

At 2:53 of the 4th, Hatton landed a pair of right uppercuts to the chin of his opponent. Hatton pushed his advantage, but he suffered a low blow from Castillo at the 1:36 mark of the round. Referee Joe Cortez stopped the action and deducted a point from Castillo for repeated low blows.

Hatton came right back and muscled his opponent into the ropes and then unloaded with left hooks to the ribs and right hands to the midsection of the Mexican legend. With 1:01 left in the 4th, Hatton landed a sharp left hook to the liver and Castillo went down. At the count of four, he was able to shove his mouthpiece back in. Unfortunately for Castillo, that was all he was able to do, and he kneeled near the ropes while Cortez completed the 10 count.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR HATTON?

After the knockout, Hatton said, “I just touched him to the head and slipped round and found the gap behind the elbows. From the very first round I thought I was stronger than him. So that was my key, keep it on him and hopefully break him.”

Hatton, who entered the fight as a -190 favorite according to Bodog, expressed interest in a possible fight with pound-for-pound champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. Of course, Mayweather is technically retired at the moment, but a load of cash would no doubt force him to reconsider. For the sake of professional boxing, let’s hope it happens.

Chris Benoit and Family Found Dead

Sure, it may have nothing to do with betting, but we here at Dare to Gamble wanted to pause for a moment and acknowledge the passing of one of our favorite wrestlers. On June 25th, Chris Benoit was found dead in his home, along with his wife Nancy (formerly known as Woman) and son Daniel.

While details are still sketchy, the WWE has released the following statement:

“World Wrestling Entertainment is deeply saddened to report that today Chris Benoit and his family were found dead in their home. There are no further details at this time, other than the Benoit family residence is currently being investigated by local authorities.”

Benoit was highly respected in the wrestling world for his technical ability and skill in constructing a match. With his trademark toothless grin and ripped physique, he was certainly a fan favorite. Originally from Canada, he performed in ECW, WCW, WWE, and numerous foreign companies. He was a former WWE champion.

Monday night’s RAW was canceled and replaced with a tribute to Benoit, including matches and comments from others in the wrestling community. Many of the clips can be found on the excellent DVD entitled Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story, which I highly recommend.

Fayette County, Georgia police are investigating Benoit’s house following the discoveries of the bodies. Lieutenant Tommy Pope told ABC news that it was being investigated as a “possible double murder-suicide,” and the police were not searching for any suspects outside the home, as the instruments of death were located at the scene.

Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni - Full Results

Friday night, June 22nd, Strikeforce and EliteXC combined to present a mixed martial arts show entitled Strike force - Shamrock vs. Baroni. As the name suggests, the main event of the show was Frank Shamrock taking on Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title. Here are the full results:

FULL RESULTS

Sam Spengler vs. Seth Kleinbeck - At 2:55 of the 2nd round, Kleinbeck forced the match to be stopped with wicked shots to his downed opponent. Seth Kleinbeck gets the TKO victory.

Chris Cariaso vs. Anthony Figueroa - Cariaso wins a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Rex Richards vs. Ray Seraille - Richards gets a quick win in 34 seconds after landing a right to the jaw of his opponent.

Jason Von Flue vs. Luke Stewart - In the first round, Stewart got several takedowns but couldn’t do anything with them. In the second, Stewart dominated and kept his opponent on his back through much of the round. In the third, Stewart got him down again and started landing punches. Enough got through that it was stopped at 2:17 of the third.

Mike Pyle vs. Aaron Wetherspoon - The first round saw both men exchange punches, but Pyle’s offense was stronger. In the second, both men opened up their offense and threw effective punches and kicks. This round could go to either man. Pyle took control in the third, landing a takedown and connecting with some punches and elbows on the ground. The judges score it 30-27, 29-27 and 30-27 for Mike Pyle. Wetherspoon looks really beat up.

Nikk Covert vs. Nik Theotikos - Theotikos dominates from the opening bell with punches, and the match is stopped at the 1:13 mark. Covert is placed in a neck brace and taken out on a stretcher.

Victor Valenzuela vs. Edson Berto - Berto wasted no time in locking on a heel hook, and this one was over in 47 seconds.

Paul Buentello vs. Carter Williams - Tough first round, with both men working hard. Buentello punishes him with knees and Williams looks to fade near the end of the round. Ten seconds into round two, it was all over after two uppercuts from Buentello. The crowd was really into this one.

Joey Villasenor vs. Murilo Ninja Rua - This is for the vacant EliteXC middleweight title. The first round was a real slugfest, with both men rocking their opponent at various times. Ninja got several takedowns. The second round was more of the same, with both men punching the hell out of each other. Ninja finally landed one that put his opponent away in the second.

Josh Thompson vs. Nick Gonzalez - The match went to the ground pretty early, and Thompson got a choke. He cinched it in and forced Gonzalez to tap at the 1:42 mark.

Cung Le vs. Tony Frycklund - Le landed a ton of kicks and punches in the first round, but Frycklund took everything he threw at him. One MMA expert said it looked like a fight out of a movie (this was a compliment). Le looked to tire as the round wore on but was very dominan.

Le continued to pick his opponent apart with kicks. He’s tired, but still seems fast enough to control the match.

In the third, Le continued his dominance and finally put Fryklund down with a couple of side kicks and a right hand. The fight was stopped and Le got the TKO victory.

Duane Ludwig vs. Paul Daley - After a back-and-forth exchange, Daley was finally able to drop him with a punch and finish him on the ground with more punches.

Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni - The last time I checked, Baroni was a -140 favorite on Bodog. Huge ovation for Shamrock.

Baroni tried to end it quick, but Shamrock wisely moved away. Baroni got in a couple of takedowns, but Shamrock worked well on the ground and was let up. Shamrock with strong punching. Baroni looked to tire as the match wore on. Shamrock had a point deducted for punching to the back of the head. Exciting round.

To start the second, Baroni landed several blows and hurt Shamrock. Both men were tired at this point. The two stood and traded. Great action. Baroni missed a takedown and Shamrock got his back and cinched in a choke. Baroni wouldn’t tap, but he eventually passed out. Shamrock wins.

Afterwards, Baroni stormed out of the arena. It was then revealed that Shamrock had blown out his knee last week during training. He had to be helped out of the ring.

If you missed this one, you might want to order the replay, as it was an incredible card from start to finish. For more MMA articles, check out the following:

2007 WSOP - Strokes, Meth, Fights and More!!

When the WSOP takes place, you can bet that there will be plenty of “characters” present. This year is no exception. And if there’s one thing that characters are good for, it’s generating lots of colorful stories. So let’s pause from the usual WSOP synopsis and take a look at some of the more interesting events which have taken place in Vegas over the past 22 days.

PAUL CLARK - DIE HARD

Paul “Eskimo” Clark (pictured) is a Vietnam vet with a love for cards. In fact, he’s been making a living at them for decades, as his three WSOP bracelets can attest to. But this year’s event has been particularly hard on him, as he has collapsed at the table on three separate occasions..

The last two times were earlier this week while playing $1,500 Razz. And both times, Clark held the chip lead. On the most recent occasion, an EMT checked him out and Clark refused to leave the table.

Kenny Johnson, an old friend of Clark, confirmed that the episodes were all the result of mini-strokes, and that Clark has had half a dozen in the last 6 months. During one collapse, Johnson also revealed that Clark had fractured his foot, but he refused to get treatment and miss the tournament.

Clark would later finish 4th in the event, earning $31,186 in the process. Here’s hoping that some of that money goes towards medical bills.

VINNIE VINH - MISSING IN ACTION

Throughout the tournament, Vinnie Vinh has been mysteriously disappearing for several days at a time. On one occasion, he failed to show up for day two of an event….when he was the chip leader!

In fact, he has finished two tournaments this year in 20th and 22nd place, both while not bothering to show up for the second day (many thought he would be found dead in his hotel room). This has led to speculation about various drug habits, with the favorite rumor involving crystal meth. While that is unconfirmed, the one thing for sure is that something incredibly unusual is going on in the life of Vinnie Vinh.

BILL CHEN - THE COLOR OF MONEY

Event #21 had a controversy, as Bill Chen negotiated with an opponent to give him 25 % of his earnings in the event in exchange for Chen moving on to the next round. He even called the tournament director over and had him verify what was going on. The deal was approved.

Unfortunately, it’s against the tournament rules to make deals with other players, and Chen, a brilliant mathematician and published poker author, was eventually disqualified. Along the way, a lot of pros seemed to take exception with the behavior, despite the fact that such deals are made all the time. It’s just that they’re normally not made with the tournament director’s knowledge.

You have to at least give Chen credit for being up front and honest.

VANESSA ROUSSO, CHAD BROWN AND AARON BEEN - READY TO RUMBLE

There was some sort of drama between poker eye candy Vanessa Rousso and frequent 2+2 forum contributor Aaron Been. The details are mostly “he said, she said,” but generally revolve around one or the other acting like an ass at the table. Rousso reportedly left the game nearly in tears (but details are once again sketchy).

Later, Rousso and boyfriend Chad Brown passed Been in a hallway, and Brown wanted an apology from him. When Been declined, Brown wanted to fight. Been also declined that offer and walked away. Let’s hope Brown got some extra special sex for his primitive display of masculinity (insert Tim Allen grunts here).

The 2+2 Forums have a thread dedicated to the incident (over 60 pages long), with comments by both Rousso and Been. Brown would have responded, but he was busy fending off a saber-toothed tiger and inventing fire.

WSOP - Day 14 Recap

2007 WSOP - Strokes, Meth, Fights and More!!

Antigua Demands Billions from U.S.

The Caribbean nations of Antigua and Barbuda are taking no prisoners when it comes to their treatment of the United States. After U.S. officials failed to comply with a World Trade Organization ruling that found their Internet gambling restrictions illegal, the tiny nations are demanding that America be fined more than $3.4 billion dollars per year. This compensation would come by withdrawing intellectual property protection for U.S. trademarks, patents and industrial designs.

OTHER COUNTRIES GET IN ON THE ACTION

Japan and India also joined in the fun, adding extra pressure by filing compensation requests as a result of Washington’s attempt to alter the details of their obligations under the 1994 General Agreement on Trade in Services. After Antigua raised such a stink, the U.S. simply removed the section on Internet gambling from their part of the agreement.

The European Union also filed a request similar to that of Japan and India earlier in the week. They stated that they wish to see the U.S. open up other trade sectors in order to compensate for deleting part of the treaty.

SO WHAT’S THEIR BEEF?

Antigua maintains that online gambling in their country provided income for hundreds of citizens and reduced their reliance on a weakened tourism industry before the U.S. introduced their ban. When the Republican party had the bright idea to stop U.S. banks and credit card companies from processing payments to online gambling business outside the country - thus eliminating half of the online gamblers in the world - Antigua and many other countries felt a major impact on their national economy.

THE WTO WEIGHS IN

In December, the WTO ruled that the law unfairly focused on offshore casinos, while American remote horse betting was unaffected. No doubt, anyone with any sense smelled the payoffs and corruption from a mile away. The WTO was happy to permit Washington’s new policy if it would only be applied fairly. This has yet to happen.

And don’t hold your breath, Antigua.

Ricky Hatton vs. Jose Luis Castillo - Preview and Odds

On Saturday night, June 23rd, former IBF junior welterweight and WBA welterweight champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton will face off against former two-time WBC lightweight champ Jose Luis Castillo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. HBO will be broadcasting the fight for free at 10 pm EST (free, that is, if you already have a subscription to HBO).

Before we get to the betting line, let’s take a moment and look at both fighters.

RICKY “THE HITMAN” HATTON

Hatton hails from Manchester, England and has a perfect record of 42-0 with 30 KO’s. He is 28-years-old, stands 5’6” and currently fights at 140 pounds. He trained by Billy Graham and managed by his father, Ray Hatton. Notable fights include his TKO of Kostya Tszyu and decisions against Juan Urango and Luis Collazo.

Hatton is an aggressive fighter who always looks to press the action. He throws tons of punches, and his most effective punch seems to be a wicked left hook to the body. His heart and determination are also formidable weapons, as The Hitman doesn’t seem to know the meaning of the word ‘quit.’ In many ways, he is very much the picture of an old school fighter.

On the flipside, Hatton does have a bad tendency to put on lots of weight between fights. He is also a bleeder due to scar tissue around his left eye. Also keep in mind that Hatton is stepping up in weight for this fight.

JOSE LUIS “EL TERRIBLE“ CASTILLO

Castillo fights out of Mexicali, Mexico and has a record of 55-7-1 with 47 KO’s. He is 33-years-old, stands 5’8” and weighs 140 pounds. He has notable wins against Stevie Johnson, Joel Casamayor, Juan Lazcano and Julio Diaz. He lost two very close decisions to Floyd Mayweather Jr. He also suffered a dramatic loss to the late Diego Corrales in 2005 (which won the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year).

Castillo is a fighter who will throw everything at you, including his head. He likes to cut off the ring and work over opponents with left hooks inside and overhand rights. He will give everything he’s got until the final bell and is the epitome of the cagey veteran.

Castillo has been in a lot of wars over his career, and that takes a toll on any fighter. Many critics have wondered how many upper-echelon fights El Terrible has left in him. Like Hatton, he also tends to cut and has had problems with his weight between fights.

PREDICTION

On paper, these two fighters sound similar in many regards. Tough fighters who push the pace, throw lots of punches, cut easily, and never take a step backwards. The biggest difference, however, may be the fact that Hatton is five years older.

This is going to be a slugfest, and boxing fans should be in for a real treat. Personally, I like Ricky Hatton to win a bloody brawl by a 9th round TKO.

BODOG ODDS

Bodog also gives you a chance to express your opinions on the outcome of the fight. There are no parlays, but the maximum bet is a very generous $1000 for the overall winner and $500 for the over/under on rounds.

Who will win?

Ricky Hatton -190

Jose Luis Castillo +155

Age of Love - Kitten or Cougar? - Bodog Odds

Mark Philippoussis has a life that most of us simply dream about. He’s tall, wealthy (over $6 million in career earnings), a former model and a professional tennis player. The native Australian also has 13 women desperately chasing after him.

You see, Mark is the latest in a long line of semi-celebrities to star in his own reality show. In this case, it’s called Age of Love and airs Monday nights on NBC. Mark Consuelos serves as the host, by the way.

But wait - did I mention that there’s a twist?

Mark thinks he’s on a run of the mill reality dating show. As he prepares to meet his seven potential love matches, he seems nervous. He mentions that he usually dates women in their twenties. Suddenly, the glass elevator containing the women begins to lower. The tension mounts.

Mark gives a sigh of relief when he realizes that the women are normal and he hasn’t fallen victim to some sort of gag. Then they start introducing themselves, and the bombshell drops. All the women are in their forties!

They are referred to on the show as the Cougars, and Mark has a hard time hiding his disappointment. “Okay, I get it now. They’re older,” he says, still seeming a bit shellshocked.

YET ANOTHER TWIST

After taking several of the Cougars out for a date and, like in all good reality shows, eliminating one, Mark is then let in on yet another twist. Besides the Cougars, he will also be able to select from six women in their twenties (dubbed the Kittens)! As you can imagine, Mark seems very happy with this news.

BODOG ODDS

Of course, the questions is whether Mark will ultimately choose a Cougar or a Kitten? Luckily, Bodog is more than happy to provide us with a betting line on that very question. The maximum bet is $50.

Kitten -300

Cougar +200

I don’t think the producers of the show actually think that Mark will select one of the Cougars. I think they’re far more interested in watching the female contestants bicker and fight. Certainly, the Kittens will be smug and overconfident, while the Cougars will most likely be bitter and envious. This is what passes for entertainment in the modern age. Can televised gladiatorial games be far behind?

Phil Hellmuth Makes History...Again!

Phil Hellmuth is certainly on a roll at this year’s World Series of Poker. Having already moved ahead of Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan after winning a record 11th WSOP bracelet, Hellmuth has now reached another career milestone.

His final table appearance in Event #28 moved him into a first-place tie with TJ Cloutier for most career final tables at the WSOP. Both men now have 39 such appearances.

Phil showed up late for the event, as usual, but by that point he only needed to outlast one player to tie the record. With a couple of short stacks at the table, it was only a matter of time. Eventually, Luke Vrable’s pocket Nines fell to Ben Fineman’s pocket Queens, and Phil Hellmuth had made history once again.

But the master wasn’t done yet. Phil continued on, no doubt looking for a 12th WSOP bracelet. Pocket Aces helped him along the path, but Phil finally ran out of luck during a showdown with Beth Shak. Phil went all-in pre-flop holding an A-10. Shak had a K-Q. Another King was turned over later, and the Poker Brat was out in sixth place.

For his finish in Event #28, Hellmuth won $76,464. Unfortunately, he also dropped an undisclosed amount to Phil Ivey in side bets. Nonetheless, it was a good day for Hellmuth.

In fact, legendary player TJ Cloutier was on hand to congratulate Phil on his accomplishment. You know you’re damn good when players like Cloutier are doling out the congratulations. Never at a loss for words, Hellmuth stated, “There is the world, and then there is me.”

Bingo - 10 Interesting Facts

Whether people are playing online, competing in person, or just watching National Bingo Night on television, there’s no doubting that bingo is a game which continues to grow in popularity. With its so-simple-a-child-can-understand-them rules and the allure of all sorts of prizes, it’s no wonder why bingo halls across America and Europe are packed every evening.

But even those who’ve already caught bingo fever might be surprised to learn some of the interesting facts which surround the game. For your enjoyment, I’ve compiled 10 of them below. Enjoy!

10 FACTS ABOUT BINGO

2. When polled, fans of the game listed ‘enjoyment’ as the number one reason why they play bingo. ‘Winning money’ finished 5th.

3. The first bingo game played in North America was held to raise money. It was played at a church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

4. The largest bingo game in history took place at New York’s Teaneck Armory. There were 60,000 players in all, with an additional 10,000 being turned away at the door.

5. An average game of bingo takes between four and four and a half minutes.

10. Bingo was popularized in the United States by a toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe. He charged game organizers $1 a year to use the idea and the name ‘Bingo.’ He also employed a math professor to come up with 6000 unique bingo cards. According to legend, the poor professor want insane after completing his task!

2007 CFL Season - Bodog Odds

Fans of the Canadian Football League have to be excited, as the start of the 2007 season is right around the corner. For those of you not familiar with the most popular football league in Canada, let’s take a closer look.

FACTS ABOUT THE CFL

Founded in 1958 (but dating back to around 1860), the CFL is comprised of eight teams which are divided into two divisions (East and West). The league has a nineteen-week regular season that runs from Canada Day weekend until early November. Once the regular season is over, the six teams with the best overall record advance to the three-week single-elimination playoffs. This culminates in the Grey Cup championship (established in 1909), and it is the country’s largest television event. The 2007 Grey Cup will be held in Toronto on November 25th. The CFL is second only to the NHL in popularity.

TEAMS OF THE CFL

East Division

Hamilton Tiger-Cats - Based in Hamilton, Ontario, the Tiger-Cats were established in 1950 and have 14 Grey Cup wins. They are led by QB Jason Maas.

Montreal Alouettes - Based in Montreal, Quebec, the Alouettes are led by QB Anthony Calvillo. Established in 1996, they have 5 Grey Cups wins to their credit. In 2006, they made it to the Grey Cup but were defeated by the BC Lions, 25-14.

Toronto Argonauts - Based in Toronto, Ontario, the Argonauts have Damon Allen as their QB. Established in 1873, they have 15 Grey Cup wins.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers - Established in 1930, the Blue Bombers are located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They have 10 Grey Cup wins, and this season will see QB Kevin Glenn lead them onto the field.

West Division

British Columbia Lions - Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Lions were established in 1954 and have racked up 5 Grey Cup wins in that time. Led by QB Dave Dickenson, they are the defending Grey Cup champions, having defeated the Montreal Alouettes by a score of 25-14.

Calgary Stampeders - Based in Calgary, Alberta, the Stampeders were founded in 1935. So far, they have 5 Grey Cup wins under their belt. Their starting QB is Henry Burris.

Edmonton Eskimos - Established in 1949, the Eskimos have 13 Grey Cup wins to their credit. When they take the field in Edmonton, Alberta, QB Ricky Ray leads them into battle.

Saskatchewan Roughriders - Based in Regina, Saskatchewan, the Roughriders have an excellent QB in Kerry Joseph. But while established in 1910, they only have 2 Grey Cup wins in team history.

Ultimate Fighter 5 - The Ultimate Finale

The Ultimate Fighter is a reality series produced by the UFC and broadcast on Spike TV. On the show, 16 prospective MMA fighters are divided into teams and put together in a house near Las Vegas. Each team is trained by a MMA superstar, and a single elimination tournament is held. The winner of this tournament gets a six-figure UFC contract.

The 5th season is a bit different, as only lightweight fighters are featured on the show. On past editions, fighters from all weight classes were involved.
On Saturday, June 23rd, the 5th edition of The Ultimate Fighter will culminate in a fight card from Vegas. Called The Ultimate Finale, fans will not only see the conclusion of the single elimination tournament, but also a showdown between the two head coaches , former UFC welterweight champ B.J. Penn and former UFC lightweight champ Jens Pulver.

ULTIMATE FINALE FULL CARD

Main Card

Jens “Little Evil” Pulver vs. B.J. “The Prodigy” Penn

Manvel “Pitbull” Gambaryan vs. Nathan Diaz (Tournament Final)

Roger Huerta vs. Doug Evans

Thales Leites vs. Floyd Sword

Preliminary Card

Brandon Melendez vs. Joe “Creepy Joe” Lauzon

Andy Wang vs. Cole “Magrino” Miller

Rob Emerson vs. Gray “The Bully” Maynard

Leonard Garcia vs. Allen Berube

Brian Geraghty vs. Matt Wiman

B.J. PENN VS. JENS PULVER

B.J. Penn

B.J. Penn is the first American-born winner of the World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the black belt category. He is a former UFC welterweight champ, and winning that title marked his crowning achievement in the world of MMA. To capture the title, he jumped up in weight to take on Matt Hughes, who was a five-time defending champ at the time. Penn won in the first round via a rear naked choke.

He has career wins over Matt Hughes, Renzo Gracie, Duane Ludwig, Matt Serra and Takanori Gomi. His recent career has not been so bright, though, as he has lost 3 of his last 4 fights (to Matt Hughes, Georges St. Pierre and Lyoto Machida). Winning this fight could very well get his career back on track and allow him to move on to even bigger matches (and perhaps a 3rd match with Hughes).

Jens Pulver

“Little Evil” is noted for his defensive wrestling and boxing, which has become known as “sprawl and brawl” in the MMA world. He is also highly respected for the knockout power contained in his left hand - specifically his devastating left hook.

Pulver has defeated Caol Uno, Dennis Hallman and B.J. Penn during his career, but his last fight at UFC 63 ended in a first round KO at the hands of Joe Lauzon. He has also lost to Duane Ludwig, Takanori Gomi and Hayato Sakurai.

In 2002, Pulver defeated Penn by majority decision to retain his UFC lightweight belt. Despite the fact that Pulver was the champ, Penn was heavily favored to win. It has been said that this didn’t sit well with Pulver, and there has been bad blood between the two men ever since.

BODOG ODDS

Currently, the only odds offered by Bodog are on the Penn/Pulver fight, but others will no doubt be added as the fight date approaches. Keep in mind that there are no parlays, and the maximum wager is limited to $500. Currently, the betting line stands at:

B.J. Penn -330

Jens Pulver +260

Fantasy Football News - Sunday Ticket, Vick, and More!

The world of fantasy football never slows down, and we here at Dare to Gamble do our best to keep you informed of all the latest happenings. So sit back, grab a soda, and take a look at the latest news items from the NFL.

Chris Brown is a Titan - The Tennessee Titans have reached an agreement to bring back free-agent RB Chris Brown. As you might remember, Brown played the first four years of his career with the team. The contract is said to be a one-year deal worth $1.8 million. With just rookie Chris Henry and LenDale “The Blimp” White to beat out, Brown could very well be a nice surprise this year.

Portis Continues Rehab - Redskins RB Clinton Portis says that his shoulder and knee rehab are ahead of schedule. This bears watching, though, as Portis seems to have really dropped in most fantasy magazines.

Arrington Hurt in Accident - According to ESPN, free-agent LB LaVar Arrington broke bones in his arm and leg after being involved in a motorcycle accident on Monday. You would think players would have learned a lesson from Kellen Winslow Jr. and Ben Roethlisberger - stay off of freakin’ motorcycles. Looks like Arrington won’t be helping out any teams this season.

Dolphins Cut Wilkinson - The Dolphins have cut DT Dan “Big Daddy” Wilkinson. They tried to trade him to the Broncos for a 6th round pick a few months ago, but Wilkinson never showed up for the physical to seal the deal. Many believe all this is an effort by the veteran to avoid off-season workouts, so look for him to wind up somewhere closer to the start of the season.

Raiders Draw Complaints - The Oakland Raiders cancelled the final week of their off-season training program after complaints from the Players’ Union over the intensity of their practices. It seems that players were already engaging in contact, which is clearly prohibited this early in the year under league rules. Looks like Lane Kiffin’s stint with the Raiders is already off to a rough start, especially when you consider that one of the team’s players was the one who lodged the complaint.

Vick Controversy Continues - Michael Vick is now cancelling personal appearances due to the amount of questions he’s been getting on the dog fighting incident. Pencil him in right now to have a disastrous season and not be with the Falcons this time next year.

Sunday Ticket Price Increase - The cost of getting the NFL Sunday Ticket package has gone up to $249 for the Early Bird special. It also features 8 less games than usual (thanks mainly to the blasted NFL Network). If you are a current subscriber, however, I’ve heard that you might be able to get $100 knocked off of the price if you call and threaten to cancel your subscription (citing the price increase). I’m not certain that this will work, but I’ve seen other subscribers claim that this tactic worked for them.

Cage Fury 5 - Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer

It seems that there’s a MMA event occurring every time I turn around, and the latest goes by the name Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5. It will take place Saturday, June 23rd, at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main event will feature professional boxer “Merciless” Ray Mercer taking on streetfighting legend Kimbo Slice.

CAGE FURY 5 COMPLETE CARD

Ray Mercer vs. Kimbo Slice (Heavyweight)

Brian DeMuro vs. Al Buck (Welterweight)

Doug Gordon vs. Lyman Good (Welterweight)

Nick Catone vs. John Howard (CFFC Middleweight Title)

Jim Miller vs. Anthony Morrison (CFFC Lightweight Title)

Mike Varner vs. Nick Serra (CFFC Welterweight Title)

Dante Rivera vs. Alexis Aquino (NABC Middleweight Title)

Gregor Gracie vs. Josh Lydell (Welterweight)

Devidas Taurosevicius vs. Kevin Roddy (NABC Lightweight Title)

Josh Rhodes vs. Noah Inhofe (CFFC Light Heavyweight Title)

RAY MERCER VS. KIMBO SLICE

Ray Mercer

The man known as “Merciless” Ray Mercer is a U.S. Amateur Champion, 1988 Olympic gold medalist, and a former Army Sergeant. At 46 years of age, his best days are certainly behind him. This was demonstrated by his KO loss to Shannon Briggs. While Briggs is no doubt a big puncher, the Mercer who took men like Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis the distance seemed incapable of being knocked out in his prime. For a perfect example, go to YouTube and check out his brutal victory over Tommy Morrison (back before Tommy Gunn’s career fell apart).

While this is the first time that Mercer has competed in a match with full MMA rules, he has dabbled in the world of K-1 kickboxing. In doing so, he has looked less than impressive - a fate that seems to plague many boxers who try to make a transition into the world of MMA. Still, he is training in the New Jersey area, and he claims to be working hard on both grappling and submission holds.

Mercer has predicted a first round knockout, claiming that either “he goes or I do.”

Kimbo Slice

Kimbo Slice, on the other hand, has made his reputation with no formal boxing skills. Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson) was a standout football player who had a short stint on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad (reportedly after an altercation with defensive star Warren Sapp). He later served as a bodyguard for MILF Hunter Productions. But his claim to fame is a series of bare-knuckle fights available all over the Internet.

In these fights, he pounds men like “Afro Puff,” “The Bouncer” and “Rasta” into submission. This prompted Rolling Stone magazine to refer to him as “King of the Web Brawlers.” His sole loss came against police officer Sean Gannon, who was later signed by the UFC due to the attention the fight received. Gannon went 1-1 over the next two years.

BODOG ODDS

Will the 31-year-old Slice slug his way to victory against his aging opponent, or will Mercer utilize decades of boxing experience to school the brawler in the finer points of the Sweet Science? It’s a tough call, but Bodog seems willing to take bets on the subject. Currently, their odds stand at:

Ray Mercer +175

Kimbo Slice -215

Mixed Martial Arts - Dale Earnhardt Jr. - Britney Spears - The Best of Dare To Gamble

This week's "Best of Dare To Gamble" is a heavy on the fight game.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS AND BOXING

We start off with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In one of the Rich Franklin outpointed Yushin Okami to set up a Middleweight Championship match with the winner of Anderson Silva and Nathan Marquardt at UFC 73. Here are the full ufc 72 results.

The Ultimate Fight Night is coming. You might also know this as Ultimate Fight Night 10. This is a UFC-sponsored card for Spike TV. The two feature matches are Sam Stout vs. Spencer "King" Fisher and John Fitch vs. Roan Carneiro. We offer a full ultimate fight night preview.

Former UFC Middleweight Champ Frank Shamrock fights on Showtime pay-per-view at the Strikeforce - Shamrock vs. Baroni. He will challenge Phil "The New York Bad-Ass" Baroni for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title.

Last Saturday, professional boxing aired a potential fight-of-the-year candidate in the Cotto vs Judah fight. The unbeaten Cotto knocked out Judah in the 11th round of a fight in which both fighters were bloody and beaten.

BEST OF SHOW

Meanwhile, in the wake of the Michael vick dog-fighting scandal, DareToGamble decided to post an article on dog fighting history and facts. This gives Vick fans and haters all the information they need to know about this controversial activity.

For a different kind of dog competition, we also had a feature story on nathans famous hot dog eating contest. After Joey Chestnut's recent defeat of Hall-of-Fame hot dog eater, Takeru Kobayashi, the Chestnut-Kobayashi rivalry heats up at the famous Nathans Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Kobayashi barely defeated Chestnut in the competition last year, by a margin of 53.75 to 52. They actually air this on ESPN.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER

Daretogamble continues its coverage of the 2007 World Series of Poker. For an excerpt, check out our world series of poker 2007 day 14 recap. You can follow the links at the bottom of our recaps pages all the way back to Day 1.

For those who want a free trip to next year's WSOP, we directed players to the Milwaukee's Best World Series of Poker online tournament. The WSOP online poker challenge offers online events every week. The top point-getters each week qualify for an all-expense paid trip to the 2008 WSOP.

BODOG PROPOSITION BETS

We also featured another string of wacky Bodog props bets. There was a Britney Spears new album bet, where you can bet on the name of Britney's next album. Her website wants her fans to vote on what that name will be, and bodog has the action covered. My favorite album title option is "Panties".

Updating an earlier prop bet, we had an article on Dale Earnhardt Jr. The wager involved whom Junior would sign with. The winner was Hendrick Motorsports. Looks like it's going to be an unholy alliance of dale earnhardt jr. and jeff gordon.

GAMBLING LAWS

This site continued its exhaustive coverage of the ongoing fight for gambling freedom across America.

To inform the public of the ongoing debate over internet casino legislation, we offered internet poker editorial links. This directs readers to several editorials from around the country, ranging from Philadelphia to New York to Arizona all the way to several unknown stops along the internet. We featured Jon Kyl's argument against online poker, as well as the thoughts of Daretogamble's "editorial staff".

This site also covered the latest poker hearings on igrea legislation, which took place in Congress on Friday last. Finally, we directed our readers to a Cardplayer article which provided an excellent online casino law summary.

UFC 72 - Full Results

UFC 72: Victory took place Saturday night at The Odyssey in Belfast, Northern Ireland. For all you fans of MMA, here’s how the fights went down.

RESULTS FOR UFC 72

Dustin Hazelett vs. Stevie Lynch - Both men looked good in the stand-up game early, as they worked the jab and attempted to feel out their opponent. At a point, Lynch (from Belfast) went for a kick and fell down. Hazelett wasn’t about to waste such an opportunity, and he managed to maneuver behind his opponent and lock in a choke. Lynch was forced to submit at 2:50 of the first round.

Eddie Sanchez vs. Colin Robinson - Round One saw plenty of action, with both heavyweights demonstrating their striking ability. Robinson, the local hero, got a mount at one point and went for the armbar, but Sanchez managed to survive and get in some elbows of his own.

In Round Two, Sanchez quickly took Robinson down and delivered some big punches and elbows. The ref was forced to stop the fight at 32 seconds of the 2nd and award the win to Eddie Sanchez.

Jason Tan vs. Marcus Davis - Tan threw some nice kicks, but he got caught by a Davis right hook and knocked out at the 1:15 mark. Marcus Davis wins.

UFC 72 MAIN CARD

Scott Smith vs. Ed Herman - The crowd was really up for this fight, as both men worked hard to deliver the goods. Smith got busted up badly from an elbow to the nose, but he also got his opponent in a heel hook and looked to close the show. Herman reversed, but then Smith managed to reverse again. Back and forth action, with the edge going to Ed Herman.

Herman went right for a takedown to start Round Two, but he got caught in a guillotine choke. Herman escaped and threw elbows from the top. Smith gave up his back and Herman forced him to submit with a rear naked choke.

Tyson Griffin vs. Clay Guida - Guida went for takedown after takedown, but Griffin showed off his superior balance by staying on his feet. There was no doubt that Griffin was the better fighter in the stand-up.

The 2nd round saw a great display of holds and escapes, as both men worked hard. Guida luckily blocked a German suplex attempt, and he came right back with a kneebar. Griffin escaped and went for a heel hook, and then Guida almost locked in choke to end the round. Most seemed to think that Guida won the round.

Round 3 continued the fast pace, and Guida seemed to be in control for much of the round. Griffin got in some solid work from the bottom, but Guida finished the round well with lots of punches from the top. The decision is going to be a close one.

The scores were 29-28 Griffin, 28-29 Guida, and 29-28 Griffin. Tyson Griffin won by split decision. The crowd booed the decision and seemed really behind Guida after the loss.

After the fight, it was announced that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will take on Dan “Hollywood” Henderson on September 9th in London.

Jason MacDonald vs. Rory Singer - Singer dominated the round, landing punches and knees and bloodying MacDonald up.

In Round Two, MacDonald got the takedown and rained down punches. MacDonald was in the guard, but he expertly applied the can opener maneuver, escaped the guard, and then started beating on Singer from the mount. After about a dozen blows, the ref stepped in and awarded the victory to Jason MacDonald.

Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez - Griffin was very popular coming out. In fact, the Belfast crowd seemed to go nuts for everything he did in the first round. It was a close contest, as Ramirez looked to have the better punching ability, while Griffin landed lots of low kicks and showed superior movement in the Octagon.

In Round Two, the low kicks seemed to take their toll on Ramirez. He appeared to tire later in the round, and Griffin connected with several flurries. Griffin clearly won the round.

Round Three was all Forrest Griffin. He landed punches, kicks and knees to an exhausted Ramirez.

The scorecards had to fight straight 30-27 for Griffin. A very impressive performance for Forrest, and it was a win that he definitely needed.

Rich Franklin vs. Yushin Okami - Not much happened in Round One. Both men mostly seemed to be feeling out their opponent.

In Round Two, Franklin was a little busier, but Okami didn’t do much of anything. Some of the crowd were booing in Round Two.

Okami came to life in Round Three, taking Franklin down with a leg trip and going for several submissions. Franklin managed to escape, but Okami certainly seemed to win the round.

The scorecards had it 29-28 across the board for Rich Franklin. Afterwards, is was announced that Franklin would get a shot at the winner of the UFC 73 showdown between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Nathan Marquardt.

With the massive popularity of online gambling, it was only a matter of time that the government turned its watchful eye to our favorite hobby. This culminated in Congress's Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, generally known as the UIGEA law.

This law forced American gamblers and gambling interests to become involved in the political process. Since fall of 2006, gamblers, casino owners and bankers have been organizing to fight the UIGEA in Congress and all fifty states. Bill Frist's and Jon Kyl's law has become a rallying point for advocates of online gambling.

Our advocates have entered the public debate, taking a libertarian stance with a mind to protecting Americans' right to privacy.

Speaking of the public debate, I thought I would include links to a half dozen editorials about online gambling laws. I hoped to show both sides of the argument, but it's hard to sift through the avalanche of public opinion against the UIGEA. As we go along, I'll try to find links to more examples of John Kyl's side of the debate.

PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

We begin with the Philadelphia Inquirer's inquirer opinion piece, which discusses the ancient history of gambling and what gambling means to human society and the individual human psyche. While it's a little airy for my tastes, this article does place American gambling in a historical perspective.

USA TODAY

A USA Today article on online gambling focuses on the danger posed to young gamblers who don't have the maturity to understand the economic consequences of gambling losses. These "young gamblers" are those between 18 and 21, identified by USA Today as college gamblers.

JON KYL

Senator Jon Kyl (pictured above), who was Bill Frist's wingman in the passage of the UIGEA, has weighed in with an argument on his own website. Senator Kyl argues that online poker is the most addictive form of gambling for youths, and therefore should not be made legal.

It looks like "college age gambling" will be an issue in ongoing congressional debates. As our story on the poker hearings on the igrea bill, youth gambling was a major issue during a recent committee hearing.

RODNEY BALKO

Rodney Balko was at those same hearings. Mr. Balko, the senior editor of Reason.com, testified before Congress on June 11, 2007. Seeing that they are so close to the news story, Reason offers an insiders coverage of the editor's visit to Washington.

THE ONLINE WIRE DOT COM

Theonlinewire.com has an editorial on the iMEGA lawsuit brought against Alberto Gonzales and the U.S. government in the last couple of weeks. This article discusses the back room supporters of the IMEGA lawsuit, the American Bankers. The UIGEA law requires American banks to enforce U.S. laws, forcing them to do the job of the Department of Justice at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars a year to the banks.

Interestingly, this article has an anti-Antigua slant I've not seen before. The article explains why Online Wire believes the iMEGA lawsuit has a better chance of helping American gamblers than the Antigua online casino WTO ruling does.

GAMBLING911

Looking back to the UIGEA passage last year, Gambling911 decided to launch a rant against Senator John Kyl's part in the UIGEA titled Online Poker George Bush and Family Values.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Not to get into too much of an editorial of my own here, but the "young gambler" argument drives me crazy. Adults age 18 to 21 are considered too immature to understand the consequences of internet gambling debts, yet these young adults are allowed and even encouraged to sign up for the military.

Americans age 18 to 21 aren't mature enough to understand the consequences of gambling, but they are assumed to be mature enough to understand the consequences of volunteering for combat duty.

Florida Poker Bill Becomes Law - No Limit Holdem

The state of Florida passed a law allowing No-Limit Texas Hold 'em.

The law allows casinos to raise the limits on Limit Holdem events, while also legalizing the no limit games. On July 1, 2007, the florida poker bill becomes law.

The bill covers casino stakes and ring games. Buy-ins cannot exceed $100, though this is the only limitation on the rule. The limit in pot limit games are raised from 2 dollars to 5 dollars. Larger buy-ins are allowed for tournaments.

Rules are loosened on gaming in non-casino betting venues, too. Race tracks and jai-alai stadiums, where gambling was allowed during events--but only during events--has been expanded. Gamblers now may attend these venues and bet when events are not being held.

Casinos are allowed to pay out "card jackpots", such as high hand jackpots and bad beat jackpots.

Poker Laws in Florida

Poker was legalized in Florida in 1996, though in a limited form.

This bill was passed by the Florida legislature in April. When Florida governor Charlie Crist declined to either sign nor veto the bill in the allotted time, the bill automatically became law.

Britney Spears' New Album - Bet on the Title at Bodog

While the masses eagerly await the next bit of controversy from Britney Spears, the blonde songstress is hard at work on her 5th studio album. It will be the first since her divorce from Kevin Federline, the birth of her two sons, and her subsequent display of increasingly bizarre behavior and visits to rehab.

And even though Spears has sold over 76 million albums worldwide - enough to make her the 8th best-selling female artist in American music history - many are wondering if she hasn’t lost her core audience of fresh-faced teenage girls. While she may be the only female in music history to have her first four studio albums debut at number one, this latest album may very well be the one which defines her career. Will she replace Madonna as the reigning Queen of Pop, or will she become a catastrophic punch line in the vein of Michael Jackson?

THE COLLECTED WORKS OF BRITNEY SPEARS

In case you’ve forgotten - or never knew in the first place - Britney’s studio albums to this point include:

…Baby One More Time (1999)

Oops!…I Did It Again (2001)

Britney (2003)

In the Zone (2004)

THE 5TH ALBUM

Her 5th studio album is expected to be released in the fall of 2007, with the first single expected in September. She has reportedly worked with producers ranging from Pharrell Williams to Sean Garrett. Semi-articulate producer Ne-Yo even went so far as to say that the album would include “songs about love, songs about hate, songs about whatever.”

IS THERE A POINT TO ALL THIS?

Actually, there is. You see, on Britney’s official website, a call just went out for her “most die-hard” fans to help her select the title of her next album. Suggested titles were:

What If the Joke Is On You

Down Boy

Integrity

Dignity

Omg Is Like Lindsay Lohan Like Okay Like
(a tribute to Britney’s party and rehab pal, Lindsay Lohan)

BODOG HAS THE ODDS

As always, Bodog is offering odds on the outcome. Just pop on over to their site and you can select from an assortment of possible album titles for Brit Brit‘s latest masterpiece. The maximum wager allowed is $50. At the moment, the options include:

You’ll Never See It My Way… 3/1

Omg Is Like Linsday Lohan Like Okay Like 8/1

What If The Joke Is On You 7/2

Down Boy 6/1

Integrity 4/1

Dignity 9/2

I’ve Never Left 7/1

To Kevin With Love 8/1

Panties? 12/1

World Series of Poker 2007 - Day 14 Recap

Here's the latest from the World Series of Poker 2007. After three final tables yesterday, the WSOP reloads today. There were no finishes, though events 23 and 24 get under way.

Event #22 - $5,000 No Limit Holdem

Dustin Dirksen came into the day as the chip leader, though he would not survive to the final table. Tex Barch came into Day 2 in 2nd place, though he will enter the final table with the 5th most chips.

Players of note in this event were T.J. Cloutier, Kathy Liebert, Allen Cunningham and Jennifer Tilly.

The final table sits at 2pm Vegas time tomorrow, with three players holding over $1 millin in chips apiece. Karga Holt, James Mackey and Nick Schulman are 1-2-3 in chips.

Event #23 - $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha

This event starts today. It is expected to be a two day event.

A big field joined this tourney. Over 500 players signed up for the Pot Limit Omaha. The field included such names as Phil Gordon, Erick Lindgren, Humberto Brenes, Erik Seidel, Josh Arieh, Marcel Luske, David Ulliot, Freddy Deeb.

Gorden busted out early. He was followed by Michael Mizrachi, Chris Ferguson and Sam Farha, both of whom left before dinner time.

The professional with the best start is Jonny Chan ($116,000), who sits in 4th place after the first day. Scott Clements has the chip lead, with $248,000 in chips.

23 players remain in the event. They will play down to a final table, which will rap up in the evening section tomorrow.

Event #24 - $3,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo World Championship

This event starts today. It is expected to be a three day event.

There were 236 players who entered. Among the stars of this event are Greg Raymer, Marcel Luske, Annie Duke, Mike Matusow, Layne Flack, John Juanda, Chip Reese, Ted Forrest, Phil Ivey, Scotty Nguyen, Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer, Daniel Negreanu, Tony G, and Mike Sexton. That's an awfully stout field.

Mike "the Mouth" Matusow left the action to drive to the house and pick up his iPod. It seemed to help. Matusow returned to finish strong on the day and remains in contention.

John Richardson is the chip leader, though Scotty Nguyen stands in 2nd and Marcel Luske is in 5th place. There are 118 players remaining after Day 1.

World Series of Poker 2007 - Day 13 Recap

The 2007 World Series of Poker rolls along with three final tables today.

Event #19 - $1,500 No Limit Texas Hold 'Em

This has become the default event at the World Series of Poker. Contestants included Humberto Brenes, John "the Razor" Phan, Devin Porter, Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, Alex Bolotin, Lars Bonding, Shawn Hattem and Francois Safieddine.

Safieddine won the event, collection over a half million dollars. He defeated John Phan heads-up for the bracelet.

Event #20 - Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo 8-or-Better

Ryan Hughes won the final table, which included such names as Doug "Rico" Carli and Greg "Fossilman" Raymer. Raymer put out four of the first five eliminated, amassing the chip lead.

But Hughes fought back, taking pot after pot from Fossilman. Hughes finally eliminated Raymer in 4th, then took the other pro out in 3rd place shortly thereafter.

Event #21 - The $1,500 No Limit Holdem Shootout

The NLHE Shootout features single table eliminations, which lead to the standard final table of 9. This event included Daniel Negreanu, Doug Baughman, Michael Wehner, Thomas Fuller, Don Baruch, Jared Davis, Fred Goldberg and Erick Lindgren.

"Kid Poker" Negreanu finished in 3rd, though he had the chip lead at a point. The event was won by Don Baruch, while Jared Davis finished 2nd.

Event #22 - $5,000 No Limit Holdem

This event got under way, with 84 players remaining after Day 1. The most well-known players in the event are Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Kathy Liebert, Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Tex Barch, Scotty Nguyen, Joe Awada and T.J. Cloutier. Jennifer Tilly and Kathy Liebert have amassed large stacks at this point.

Dustin Dirksen has the chip lead, though that could change as we come to "moving day" on Day 2.

Event #17 - Ladies No Limit Holdem World Championship

As reported on the Phil Hellmuth post on Day 11, Sally Anne Boyer defeated stars like Katja Thater and Vanessa Selbst to win Event #17, the $1,000 Ladies No Limit Holdem World Championship.

EVENT #18 - $5,000 Limit Holdem World Championship

Saro Getzoyan defeated Geoff Sanford in head-to-head action at the final table. The victory gave Getzoyan a prize of $330000.

Event #19 - $1,500 No Limit Texas Hold 'Em

Day 2 of this event started with Lars Bonding holding the chip lead at over $155,000. Mike Matusow was in 10th place at $103,700. Other names to watch out for were Alex Bolitin and Dev "TranquilChaos" Porter in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier is over a hundred thousand in chip, too.

The final table looked completely different than the chip leader board, though. Here is a list of the final nine, in order of chip stack (largest to smallest):

Lars Bonding, Devin Porter, Shawn Hattem, Marcus Obser, John Phan, Bertrand Grospellier, Alex Bolotin, Humberto Brenes and Francois Safieddine. Bonding has $891,000 chips, while Safieddine has $302,000.

Mike Matusow finished in 11th place, just missing the final table. Before he busted, Matusow was trying to organize a players revolt. He wanted the final table members to refuse to sit in the private back room, because the casino refuses to let the public view most final tables. They get $50 for pay-per-view broadcasts, instead.

This plan never had much of a chance of succeeding, as I imagine most newbie players at a final table are ecstatic to be at the final table. It became a dead point when "the Mouth" failed to make the final table.

Event #20 - Seven-Card Stud High-Low 8-or-Better

Steve Weiss was the day 1 chip leader, but was nowhere to be seen when it came time for the final table. John Juanda, Ted Forrest, Chris Ferguson, Michael Mizrachi and Annie Duke were also knocked out of action on Day 2.

7-Card Stud got down to the final table. Fossilman and Doug Carli are among the final nine. Fossilman is in good position to win his second WSOP bracelet. I find it interesting that Raymer has shown himself to be a legitimate poker contender, while Chris Moneymaker is beginning to look increasingly like a fluke.

Strikeforce -Shamrock vs. Baroni - Preview and Odds

On Friday, June 22nd, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, MMA organizations Strikeforce and EliteXC will co-promote an event called Strikeforce - Shamrock vs. Baroni. The main card will air on Showtime pay-per-view, while the undercard will be streamed live on the Proelite website.

MMA legend and former UFC middleweight champ Frank Shamrock will take on hard-hitting Phil “The New York Bad-Ass” Baroni for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title. A second world title fight will see Joey “Dream Smasher” Villasenor versus Murilo “Ninja” Rua for the vacant EliteXC middleweight title.

STRIKEFORCE FIGHT CARD

Barring any last minute changes, here’s how the fight card is shaping up:

PPV Bouts

Frank Shamrock vs. Phil “The New York Bad-Ass” Baroni

Murilo “Ninja” Rua vs. Joey “Dream Smasher” Villasenor

Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello vs. Carter Williams

Cung Le vs. Tony Fryklund

Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett vs. Victor Valenzuela

Undercard Bouts

Paul Daley vs. Duane “Bam” Ludwig

Jason “Live Wire” Von Flue vs. Luke Stewart

Mike Pyle vs. Aaron Wetherspoon

Eugene Jackson vs. Danny Higgins

Josh “The Punk” Thomson vs. Nick Gonzalez

SHAMROCK VS. BARONI

Frank Shamrock

Frank Shamrock, the adoptive younger brother of Ken Shamrock, was the first middleweight champ in the UFC and retired undefeated from the organization (the belt he held was later changed to the light-heavyweight title). He is also a former champion of Japan’s Pancrase organization. His professional MMA record stands at 21-8-1, with wins over Bas Rutten, Enson Inoue, Cesar Gracie and Tito Ortiz. Shamrock has also coached the San Jose Razorclaws of the International Fight League.

In his most recent fight, Shamrock was disqualified during his fight with Renzo Gracie. Shamrock delivered two knees to the head of his opponent on the ground, a violation of the American Unified Rules of MMA. At the time of the disqualification, Shamrock was ahead on the score cards.

Phil Baroni

Known for his knockout power, Baroni was also a two-time All-American wrestler at Central Michigan University. His MMA record stands at 10-7, with his UFC record being 3-5. He holds wins over Dave Menne, Ikuhisa Minowa, Ryo Chonan and Yuki Kondo. In his most recent fight, Baroni defeated Yosuke Nishijima via kimura at PRIDE 32.

If Baroni can get past Shamrock, UFC President Dana White has stated that Phil would be offered a chance to return to the UFC. Without a doubt, this would translate into bigger fights and bigger paydays for “The New York Bad-Ass.”

BODOG ODDS

Bodog is currently offering odds on this fight (with a wager limit of $500), and the entire card will likely be available as we get closer to the day of the event. At the moment, the betting line stands as follows:

Frank Shamrock +110

Phil Baroni -140

WAR OF WORDS

Leading up to the fight, Shamrock and Baroni have conducted a most entertaining publicity campaign. While I’m unsure if it will translate into a higher buyrate, it has made for some great quotes. Take a look at various words of wisdom leading up to the main event. (Note: My source for these quotes bleeped out Baroni‘s cursing.)

Baroni: I think he is a scumbag. The guy is a hypocrite. I think he is a fraud, and everyone that has ever dealt with him, that I know of, does not like him. Everyone I know that has dealt with the guy thinks he is an (bleep)hole and a (bleep). Judgment Day is June 22.

Shamrock: I am a professional martial artist, and I am a professional fighter. Phil is a professional idiot. I let my talking happen in the ring.

Baroni: He is a fraud. He acts like…he uses big words, he is a big idiot. He is a retard, to be honest.

Shamrock: He is a mid-grade opponent, and he looks good, sells tickets. I think he is hilarious.

Shamrock: The strengths he brings are brute force and mindless punching.

Baroni: Look at the guys fighting in the UFC. There is a bunch of bums. TV show reality star rejects and everything else. I am more than good enough to get to fight in the UFC. I am more than good enough to wear that middleweight title.

As far as Frank Shamrock, I have to adjust one thing he keeps saying he is an artist, this and that. Well after I (bleep) knock you out, Frank, I will buy you a box of crayons and a coloring book, and you can go be a (bleep) artist. But this is not a (bleep) artist, and this is not going to be a martial arts exhibition, (bleep). This is going to be a (bleep) fight. Do you get it? I am not here to (bleep) do the (bleep)… I do not know what the (bleep) this dude is talking about martial arts. I am a (bleep) fighter. I have been a fighter since the day I was born. You are going to get in a fight. There is going to be a fight. I am going to take your (bleep) head off. I am going to pound you the (bleep) out. This is not a (bleep) … I do not know. I do not know what he is talking about martial artist and paint the picture, this is what I do. If this is what you do, you do it. I have been doing it. This is what I have been doing. I do it in the street, I do it in the ring, I have been doing it my whole life. I am a (bleep) fighter. I do not know what a (bleep) martial artist is, but man, this (bleep) guy is just a retard. He is in (bleep) la-la land, you know? I do not know where the (bleep) he is from. I am a (bleep) fighter, you know? Man, I do not get this cat. You are in for a rude awakening, dude. You are in for a rude awakening. You are going to get (bleep) up.
Shamrock: That is why they call him the “New York Bad-Ass.”

32nd America's Cup - Bodog Odds

The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sports, predating the modern Olympics by 45 years. This year, Team Alinghi from Switzerland will defend the cup against Emirates Team New Zealand in what should be a highly spirited contest.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Named after the first yacht to win the trophy, the schooner America, the cup was held by the New York Yacht Club from 1852 until 1983, an impressive winning streak of 131 years (the longest in sports history). In 1983, however, the cup was wrested away by Australia II. Since that time, the cup has been held 3 times by the United States and twice by New Zealand.

The America’s Cup is a best-of-nine series between two boats. Any challenger who meets the requirements has the right to challenge the holder of the Cup.

THE 32nd AMERICA’S CUP

In November of 2003, it was announced that Team Alinghi would defend the Cup in Valencia, Spain in 2007. This marks the first time that the Cup has been held in Europe. Since Switzerland is a landlocked country, they held open bidding to see which country would host the event.

The deadline to challenge was set as April 29th, 2005. At that time, 11 challengers from 9 countries had submitted entries.

The challenger selection series for the Louis Vuitton Cup (awarded to the team challenging for the America’s Cup) started in Valencia on April 16th, 2007, and concluded on June 6th after 122 matches. Emirates Team New Zealand won the round robin portion of the contest, then advanced to the semi-finals with Desafio Espanol, Luna Rossa Challenge and BMW Oracle Racing. Since they won the first stage of the tournament, Team New Zealand won the right to select their competition. They chose Desafio Espanol and defeated them 5-2 to advance to the finals. Meanwhile, Luna Rossa Challenge beat BMW Oracle Racing 5 races to 1.

In the finals, Emirates Team New Zealand dominated their competition on the way to a 5-0 thrashing of Luna Rossa Challenge. The stage was now set for the next America’s Cup challenge.

Dog Fighting - History and Facts

With all the recent controversy surrounding NFL quarterback Michael Vick and his alleged tie to dog fighting, I thought I would take a closer look at this illegal event which has the nation in an uproar.

The Humane Society estimates that 40,000 dog fights take place in the United States every year. It is considered a felony in 48 states and a misdemeanor in Idaho and Wyoming.

HISTORY OF DOG FIGHTING

Dog fighting has existed since the domestication of the species. It was a well-known event in the Roman Coliseum and was later popularized by the British. It flourished for well over 600 years and reached its peak in the 16th century. It remains incredibly popular in many parts of world today.

Afghanistan - The Taliban did not allow dog fighting. Since their liberation, the people of Afghanistan have once again started engaging in their passion for dog fighting.

Japan - While it is banned in Tokyo, dog fighting can still be seen in other parts of the country. It has been popular all the way back to the days of the shogun.

Russia - Dog fighting is widely practiced in Russia and the Russian mafia reportedly has turned this into a multi-million dollar industry.

United Kingdom - Dog fighting remains popular in certain parts of the UK, despite the fact that it is illegal.

Latin America -Very popular in Latin America, especially Brazil, Colombia and Argentina.

THE FIGHTING DOGS

The breed of choice for U.S. dogfighters is the American Pit Bull Terrier, although the Dogo Argentino and Presa Canario are increasing in popularity. While the American Kennel Club does not recognize pit bulls as a distinct breed, they do register breeds such as the bull terrier, bulldog, Staffordshire bull terrier and American Staffordshire terrier (these latter two dogs are often lumped into the “pit bull“ category). Popular international breeds are the Tosa in Japan and the Fila Brasileiro in Latin America.

Professional level dogfighters are very particular about the pedigree of their dogs, and a champion dog can earn a lot of money in stud fees.

TRAINING

Fighting dogs are trained from an early age to develop “gameness” (the willingness to fight despite extreme pain and exhaustion). Training varies depending on the level and experience of the owner. Some common methods of training are:

Treadmill - Increases endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

Jenny - Beams extend from a central rotating pole. The dog is tied to one pole, while a small animal is hung or harnessed from another pole. The dog then runs in circles as he or she pursues the quarry. The dog is usually rewarded with the bait once the exercise is over.

Springpole - A large pole is fixed in the ground with a spring hanging down. A rope, animal hide or tire is attached to the spring. The dog is expected to jump up and latch onto the item. This exercise is designed to strengthen the jaw muscles and back legs.

Chains and Weights - Heavy chains are wrapped around the neck of the dog to build neck and upper body strength. The same effect may be achieved by attaching a weight to a chain and hanging it from the dog‘s neck.

Bait - Animals are tied up and the dog is trained to attack and kill them.

Vitamins/Supplements/Drugs - The most commonly used are: B-12, hormones, steroids, weight-gain supplement, creatine, meth, iron/liver extract, and cocaine.

Flirtpole - A handheld pole with a lure attached to the end. The dog chases the lure along the ground.

Dogs will often be trained against one another and older, more experienced dogs. Early on, dogs engage in short fights referred to as “bumps” or “rolls” and are also incited to lunge at one another without touching.

THE FIGHT

Professional fighters have very specific rules for their fights, while street fighters tend to be less organized. Fighters will put the word out that they have a dog they want to “match” and specify the weight of the dog. Another fighter will respond and both owners will put up forfeit money for the fight.

The next stage is the “keep,” which is where the dogs undergo rigorous training and a special diet. This can include running, swimming, massages and weight pulling. The keep lasts until the day of the fight. If a dog comes in overweight or underweight, then the fight is called off and the opponent gets the forfeit money.

The fight pit is usually 14 to 20 square feet and 2 to 3 feet high. Diagonal “scratch lines” are made at opposite ends of the pit. The dogs must remain behind these lines until the referee calls for the handlers to “face your dog” and then “let go.” At this point, both dogs lunge at each other.

The dogs fight until one turns their head and shoulders away from the opponent. At this point, the dogs are separated and placed behind the scratch lines. Then they begin again. The dog who turned is released and has 10 seconds to move across the ring and attack the other dog (who is held fast). If he does, then the fight continues. If not, the fight is over. The match continues like this until one dog is too injured to continue, refuses to fight, is pulled out of the ring by a handler, jumps out of the pit, or dies. Fights can last for well over an hour.

THE CULTURE

Dogfighters come from all walks of life, and a vast underground culture has grown up around this hobby. Trade journals such as Your Friend and Mine, Game Dog Times, The American Warrior and The Pit Bull Chronicle are available. One of the largest publications, The Sporting Dog Journal, has a circulation of over 10,000 worldwide.

The Internet has also become a place for owners and enthusiasts to come together. These sites range from message boards and veterinary tips to historic fights and tributes to deceased trainers.

Given the large amount of money bet on these events, professional dog fighters can make a tremendous amount of money. While hobbyists may confine themselves to a specific region, the professional will travel across the country for high-stakes fights.

Phil Hellmuth Jr, - World Series of Poker 2007 Day 11

Here's our continuing coverage of the 2007 World Series of Poker.

EVENT #15 - $1,500 No Limit Hold Em Event

Phil Hellmuth Jr. became the all-time leading winner of World Series of Poker bracelets today. He collected his 11th bracelet, pushing him ahead of Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson. Both Chan and Brunson were present to congratulate Hellmuth for his achievement.

A mini-controversy raged around the fact that Harrah's Casino did not allow spectators to watch the event live. Instead, Harrah's officials partitioned the participants in a private room, so they could tape the event and sell pay-per-view rates of $49.95. Onlookers at the casino were allowed to watch the tape of the event an hour later, on big screen televisions placed around the event.

I imagine the casino is more interested in pleasing the broadcasters than the people on site in the casino. There's just more money there.

Here's a news article recap of the final hands in Phil Hellmuth's victory.

EVENT #16 - $2,500 H.O.R.S.E. Event

The Hellmuth landmark wasn't the only story on wsop day 11.

James Richburg won event #16, one of the prestigious H.O.R.S.E. events. Richburg went head-to-head with Walter Browne, a Chess champion. He took home $239,000 for the win.

H.O.R.S.E. is my favorite event. It's certainly the most challenging, since you have to play five games in one. In this case, Richburg eliminated Browne on a hand of Razz.

EVENT #17 - Ladies Hold 'Em Event

This event finished up. Frauke Ritter von Sporschill was the chip leader after two days, but finished 6th in the event. Sally Boyer and Anne Heft came from the middle of the pack (5th and 6th) to outlast the others and fight it out head-to-head. Boyer had a 2-to-1 chip lead in head-to-head, though Heft evened it up. Eventually, Boyer finished off her opponent with a strong late push.

Here's the final nine.

1st - Sally Anne Boyer for $262,077
2nd - Anne Heft
3rd - Randi Calabro
4th - Kathleen Gliva
5th - Katja Thater
6th - Frauke Ritter von Sporschill
7th - Mindy Trinidad
8th - Vanessa Selbst
9th - Julie Dang

EVENT #18 - World Championship of Limit Holdem

This event reached its final table today. Ray Dehkharghani and William Thorsson are the chip leaders. Thorsson is the overall chip leader. The blinds are at 8 thousand and 15 thousand. The short stack is at 95 thousand, so this contest should get heated pretty quickly.

EVENT #19 - $2,500 No Limit Holdem Event

Event 19 touched off today. They will move down to the final table of nine players tomorrow. Mike "the Mouth" Matusow remains in contention.
EVENT # 20 - $2,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low 8-or-Better

Another event which got started today. After one day of struggle, several big names are among the list of 136 players remaining.

Ted Forrest is a five time WSOP bracelet winner. Forrest is one of the less flamboyant but more effective players in the building, remains in the show.

Annie Duke and Greg Raymer, the 2004 Main Event Winner, also remain.

Celebrity DUI - Who's Next? - Bodog Has Odds!

Celebrities and DUI arrests seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly. That’s why the folks over at Bodog have released their newest prop bet entitled “Which Celebrity will be the Next to be Arrested for a DUI?”.

Now, let’s take a look at the candidates and their known brushes with controversy. Keep in mind that one of these celebrities must be arrested by December 31st, 2007, for the wager to have any action, and the maximum bet is $50.

CELEBRITIES IN CRISIS

Britney Spears - Current Odds: 6/1 - The pop princess has been in the news a lot as of late, and her behavior has become increasingly erratic. After entering an off-shore drug rehab center, she left less than 24-hours later. The next night, she showed up in a California tattoo studio and shaved her own head with a pair of clippers. A few days later, she was back in rehab. She left again, but then she returned a short time later. Spears finally left rehab on March 20 after completing the program, but how long will it last?

Akon - Current Odds: 13/2 - There’s nothing ordinary about this Senegalese-American hip hop star. He has three wives, drives an orange Lamborghini, owns a diamond mine in South Africa, and has over 4,000 pairs of sneakers. He was a former drug dealer, but he claims that he never used the product. Despite his rough past, he claims to have turned his life around.

In April of this year, he lost sponsors after performing a raunchy club dance with a 14-year-old girl in a Trinidad club. In fairness, the club’s age limit was supposed to be 18 and over. Also at a recent concert, a fan hit him with a bottle while he was performing on stage. He stopped the show and had the crowd point out the offender. The punk was brought on stage, where Akon proceeded to lift him into the air and fling him back down into the crowd.

Paula Abdul - Current Odds: 8/1 - After selling over 53 million records in the late 80s and early 90s, Abdul is best known these days as the kind-hearted judge on American Idol. In 2004, Abdul pled guilty to a misdemeanor hit-and-run after running into another car on a L.A. freeway.

Questions about substance abuse popped up after Abdul was seen exhibiting “erratic behavior” on the set of American Idol. This has been attributed to fatigue and technical difficulties. Abdul maintains that she has never been drunk or used illegal drugs.

Amy Winehouse - Current Odds: 6/1 - With a name like Winehouse, you just know that she’s going to be a drinker, and the English soul singer has not disappointed. She once got drunk and heckled U2’s Bono at an awards show, assaulted a fan after a concert, and showed up drunk for The Charlotte Church Show. In fact, she has admitted to being “an ugly dickhead drunk.”

In January of this year, she stopped a gig part way through her first song after vomiting on stage. She later claimed this was due to food poisoning.

She been spotted with numerous cuts and scars on her arms, and her spokesman attributed them to her falling over on the streets of New York. She also has a number of naked women tattooed on her body but claims that she’s not a lesbian - “not before a sambuca, anyway.”

Lily Allen - Current Odds: 4/1 - A successful English singer-songwriter, Allen once claimed to have thrown a beer bottle at the head of Jet’s drummer Chris Cester and to have physically attacked The Streets at the same concert. She later mentioned that both of these incidents were examples of why she shouldn’t get drunk.

When asked how she would celebrate if her latest single went to #1, she replied “gak,” which is a slang term for cocaine. She claimed to be joking, but the press got a lot of mileage out of that one. It probably didn’t help that she once admitted to being a drug dealer when she was 15-years-old.

But here’s one redeeming feature - she recently stated that everyone who bought Paris Hilton’s debut album should be killed off.

Avril Lavigne - Current Odds: 10/1 - Having sold over 26 million albums, this Canadian pop singer has a bright career ahead of her. While she has avoided trouble with the law, she’s also admitted to having a fondness for booze. She has admitted to writing her hit single “Girlfriend” while drunk, and touted a recent photo shoot where everyone sat around and had whiskey and cupcakes.

Any ‘Lost’ Actor - Current Odds: 7/1 - Over the course of the hit ABC series, three stars have been arrested by Hawaiian cops. Adwale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko) was nabbed for driving without a license, but the charges were later dropped.

Charges were not dropped, however, for Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros. They both pled guilty after being arrested for drunk driving.

Keep in mind, by the way, that all three of these actors have been killed off on the show.

Paris Hilton - Current Odds: 12/1 - By now, everyone on the planet is familiar with Paris Hilton’s antics. Currently serving out a jail sentence for parole violation, the pampered princess will be back out on the streets before you know it. After a DUI started her down the road to time behind bars, you would think she would have enough sense to stay off the sauce. If nothing else, hire a damned chauffeur.

Lindsay Lohan - Current Odds: 11/2 - In May of this year, Lindsay Lohan was arrested by Beverly Hills police for a DUI. Cops also found cocaine in her car, a substance which the tabloids claim Lindsay snorts enough of to make Tony Montana jealous. Two days later, she checked herself into rehab. She had already been in rehab four months earlier. This kid is a mess.

David Hasselhoff - Current Odds: 13/2 - Drunk on the floor and trying unsuccessfully to eat a hamburger - need we say more? Here’s hoping that “The Hoff” can turn things around.

Online Casino Law Summary on Cardplayer

There's a top notch summary of the online gambling legislative process on Cardplayer these days. The article covers events since the passage of the Safe Port Act in October 2006.

Here are the topics discussed in this latest Card Player poker news article:

1. Bill Frist's undemocratic tactic of forcing an anti-gambling bill into the Safe Port Act. Because regulations of online gambling could not have passed on its own merits, Frist used his power as Senate Majority Leader to attach the bill to a bill which had widespread support in the Senate. If Senators had voted against the Safe Port bill, they would have been portrayed as weak on secuirity.

2. A summit in the United Kingdom to discuss online gambling. This summit was attended by officials from 32 nations, though the U.S. declined to send a representative. This drove England's Culture Minister to criticize the U.S. stance on offshore casinos.

3. The Democrat's winning of Congress in November 2006, weeks after Frist's shenanigans. With the win, Frist not only lost his position as Senate Majority Leader, but his dreams of running for president went up in smoke. Thank Heaven for that.

4. The World Trade Organization ruling on online gambling which went against the United States. Antigua-Barbuda, with a population of 80,000, has twice defeated the U.S. before a WTO court. That's because the Bush administration's policy is so muddle-headed that even our high-priced lawyers can't make a sensible defense.

The online casino wto ruling will go down as yet another stunning example of the George W. Bush's contempt for "foreigners". When faced with defeat in the world court, the Bush administration simply ignored the WTO and the GATS treaty this nation agreed to uphold.

5. Ethics probes of the U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Gonzales is accused of firing eight U.S. attorneys for political purposes, including two attorneys who were probing Republican ethics violations. These firings shut down investigations in Republican wrongdoing, thereby subverting the normal legal process for narrow partisan reasons.

6. Coverage of four online poker bills which are being supported by most online poker advocates. The article goes on to suggest that Frist's precipitous actions offended people both for and against the poker bill, thereby providing a rallying cry for online gambling supporters. That rallying cry is the right of privacy, because the UIGEA is an intrusion into the homes and private lives of average Americans.

7. Poker Is a Game, Not a Crime. These are the words of Florida Representative Robert Wexler. You might remember him as the firebrand so prominent during the 2000 Bush-Gore election crisis. Wexler's district is the one where all the voting irregularities happened.

Online gambling has become a new issue for Wexler, who remains an outspoker critic of the Bush team. The wexler poker skill carveout is my favorite bill of the four mentioned.

Over, the Cardplayer article is a good overview of the situation. Thankfully, it's also an optimistic view. Hang in there and the process will turn in our favor.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon at Hendrick Motorsports

Updating an early post on the Dale Earnhardt Jr. bet, it looks like Junior is heading to Hendrick Motor Sports.

This is a break with Earnhardt tradition, but signing with hendrickmotorsports gives Dale Jr. the best chance to win. Why is it a break with tradition?

1. Dale Earnhardt raced with Richard Childress Racing, so many assumed that Jr. would make an alliance with his father's former car owner. The numbers seemed right, since Hendrick Motorsports already had four drivers on their team. RCR has only three cars on the circuit, so adding a fourth would have been simple.

2. Jeff Gordon races with Hendrik Motorsports. Gordon and the Earnhardts have had a long rivalry. The move to Hendrik now casts Jeff Gordon as a teammate of Junior's, which might cause his fans to wonder whether they should cheer or jeer Gordon. From what I'm seeing, some Earnhardt fans just don't like the idea of cheering for Jeff Gordon. Since rivalries are the lifeblood of NASCAR, people don't want to see a good rivalry end.

A GOOD PLACE FOR JUNIOR

That being said, this is good news for Junior fans. this is the best move for Dale Earnhardt and his fans. The biggest reason Jr. left Dale Earnhardt Racing was because it simply didn't give him a good chance to compete. He never had the kind of funding to represent his team. That will no longer be the case.

Hendrik Motor Sports has won six NASCAR titles since 1995, helping Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Terry Labonte to win titles. HMS is considered the finest team in NASCAR racing. Junior will get the machine and the team he needs to win.

THE PRESSURE IS ON

Of course, that cuts both ways. If he doesn't produce, Dale Jr. has no more excuses. He'll be in the prime of his career with the best support around him. It's time to win and win big.

By the way, Kyle Busch will leave the HMS team, making way for Junior's more high profile arrival.

WHO DID YOU HAVE IN THE BET?

The Bodog odds had Hendrick Motorsports as a favorite (-130 to -110) over Richard Childress Racing. It looks like the favorite won.

I'm still saying Budweiser will sponsor Dale Jr. next year, while he likely won't be driving the #8 car.

UFC Ultimate Fight Night - Full Results

Last night saw the UFC put on another fine MMA show with Ultimate Fight Night on Spike TV. Let’s cut through all the jibber jabber and take a look at what happened. Besides the results, I have also included betting lines from Bodog, so you can see if the favorite or underdog got the win.

RESULTS FOR ULTIMATE FIGHT NIGHT

Luke Caudillo (+135) vs. Nate Mohr (-165) - Round One saw a strong effort by both men. Caudillo caught Mohr with a strong punch, but he was unable to put him away. More standup fighting in Rounds 2 and 3, with both men getting in their licks. In the end, Nate Mohr wins a unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

Chad Reiner vs. Anthony Johnson - Johnson came out like a house on fire and landed two devastating left hooks to Reiner. Anthony Johnson gets the win in only 13 seconds. Now I see why Bodog didn’t offer odds for this fight.

Tamdan McCrery (-150) vs. Pete Spratt (+120) - Early in the match, Tamdan locked in a choke but couldn’t maintain it. Spratt later got on top of his opponent, but he got caught in an armbar and had to powerbomb his way out of it. The end of the first round saw both men brawling with one another. To start the second round, Spratt got a couple of takedowns, but Tamdan locked in a triangle choke and ended the fight at 2:04 of the 2nd.

Gleison Tibau (-450) vs. Jeff Cox (+325) - Cox took his opponent down quickly, but Tibau reversed it and got an arm triangle choke. Cox was forced to tap out at 1:52 of the first round.

Forrest Petz (+235) vs. Luigi Fioravanti (-295) - A fairly uneventful fight. Although both men stayed on their feet, few decisive shots were landed. Fioravanti had his ear and mouth bloodied. The crowd was not pleased with the fight. In the end, Forrest Petz was a unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

THE MAIN CARD

Jordan Radev (+115) vs. Drew McFedries (-145) - This is the first fight of the main card. McFedries wasted no time in putting his opponent down with an uppercut. As Radev crashed to the mat, McFedries followed up with another punch and knocked his opponent out 33 seconds into the contest.

Jon Fitch (-350) vs. Roan Carneiro (+275) - Fitch looked less than impressive in Round One, with Carneiro carrying the fight by scoring two takedowns and narrowly missing an Anaconda choke. That all changed in Round Two, however. Fitch came out throwing punches and put his opponent down quickly. He then got behind Carneiro, landed several blows to the side of his head, and then put him away with a choke.

Jason Black (-150) vs. Thiago Tavares (+120) - Tavares demonstrated superior wrestling in Round One, taking Black down and working the ground and pound. As the round ended, Black’s eye was badly swollen. Black tried for a comeback in Round Two, aggressively going for a submission. But while working for an armbar from the top position, Black allowed Tavares to escape from the hold and lock in a triangle choke from the bottom. Black was unable to escape and had to tap.

Spencer Fisher (-260) vs. Sam Stout (+200) - Time for the main event. Round One was lots of fun, as both men just beat the hell out of each other. Fisher’s eye was bleeding badly by the end of the round, and both men had stunned each other in the waning moments of the round. Round Two was more of the same. Fisher beat Stout to the punch on numerous occasions, but Fisher had cuts over and under the right eye and another on the left. Both men certainly got their licks in. Round Three was another exciting slugfest. Fisher seemed to really take command in this round, rocking Stout several times and even sending him to a knee at one point. Both men got a well-deserved standing ovation after the fight was over.

Spencer Fisher wins by unanimous decision (all 30-27). The series between these two men is now tied at 1-1, and I think it goes without saying that there should definitely be a third.

2007 World Series of Poker - Day 10 Recap

The action continued on Sunday at the 2007 World Series of Poker. Here’s a brief recap:

EVENT #13 $5,000 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP POT LIMIT HOLD’EM

The final table included players such as Jason Lester, Gavin Griffin, Humberto Brenes, Keith Lehr and Jeff Lisandro. It was Allen Cunningham, however, who came from third place to win the event after defeating Lisandro in heads-up play. This is Cunningham’s 5th WSOP bracelet, and he picked up $487,287 for the victory. Humberto Brenes took third place.

EVENT #15 $1,500 NO LIMIT HOLD’EM

Phil Hellmuth was on the hunt for a record 11th bracelet. He started the day’s final table with just under a million chips, 300,000 less than chip leader Rick Fuller. Scott Clements started the day in third place.

NOTE: It has since been announced that Hellmuth won the event on Monday and captured a record 11th WSOP bracelet. In a classy move, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson (both 10-time winners) were on hand to congratulate him.

EVENT #18 $5,000 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LIMIT HOLD’EM

Even though Hellmuth has moved into the lead, Doyle Brunson has a chance to tie him with a win in this event. He was one of the 257 players to enter this event, and he had moved into 7th place by the end of the first day. Thomas Wahlroos was in the lead with 58,100 chips. Tony G and Barry Greenstein are also in contention.

EVENT #16 $2,500 H.O.R.S.E.

This event went until 20 players were left, and then tournament directors called a halt to play. At that point, Ali Eslami was in the lead, and 2007 bracelet winner Tom Schneider is in 10th place (looking to be the first double winner this year).

$1,000 LADIES NO LIMIT HOLD’EM

This event kicked off on Sunday with defending champ Mary Jones looking to repeat last year’s success. The number of competitors was a record 1,286. At the end of the day, Jones was in 10th place. Katja Thater was in fifth, with Julia Perla, Kathleen Gliua and Ritter Trauke at the top of the leader board. The remaining 65 players at the end of Day One are all within the money bubble.

On Monday, Events #19 ($2,500 No Limit Hold’em) and #20 ($2,000 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo) got started. As always, check back with Dare to Gamble for more info on these events.

Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest - Bodog Has Odds

Each Fourth of July, 20 determined competitors gather behind a 40-foot table and engage in a grueling 12-minute contest. They are known as gurgitators. The event is known as the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.

According to archives, the event has occurred every 4th in Coney Island, New York since 1916. Every year, thousands gather to watch men like Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut stuff their faces with hot dogs. Last year, 1.5 million households tuned in to watch ESPN’s live coverage of the event.

A BRIEF HISTORY

1993 saw the Mustard-Yellow International Belt returned to U.S. soil after American Mike Devito defeated Japanese eating master Orio Ito in a one-on-one grudge match. Prior to that, the belt has resided in Japan for seven years.

Unfortunately for American fans, the belt returned to Japan and has resided in a display case in Saitama for the last six years thanks to master muncher Takeru Kobayashi. In 2006, 30,000 fans turned up in Coney Island to witness the clash between Kobayashi and his rival Joey Chestnut. Chestnut ate an amazing 52 Nathan’s Hot Dogs and Buns in the 12-minute contest, but Kobayashi retained the belt by scarfing down 53.75.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

A qualifying circuit started on March 24th in Sunrise, Florida and has been held in Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia, PA, Las Vegas, NV, Atlanta, GA and Tokyo, Japan. The winner of each qualifying round will have the right to compete in the finals on Independence Day.

Will Kobayashi win for a seventh straight year, or will an American competitor like Joey Chestnut or Chicago’s Patrick Bertoletti bring the belt back home? Luckily, our friends at Bodog are providing odds on the event for those who want to really show their support.

Ultimate Fight Night Preview - UFC on Spike TV!

Tuesday night, June 12th, will see the UFC put on their latest action-packed MMA card. Entitled Ultimate Fight Night, it’s also known to fans as Fight Night 10. The event will be broadcast live from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida and shown on Spike TV. As always, Bodog has all the odds for the fight.

SAM STOUT VS. SPENCER “KING” FISHER

The main event of the show features lightweight Spencer Fisher looking to avenge his split decision loss to Canadian knockout artist Sam Stout. There’s no title on the line, but you can bet that both men will be throwing punches with bad intentions.

In their first fight, Fisher took the bout on short notice and had to quickly drop 20 pounds to make the 155 pound limit. He then stepped into the Octagon with an opponent who’s accustomed to throwing bomb after bomb. In many ways, Fisher deserves credit for even being able to go the distance that night.

This time, however, there will be no excuses. Fisher has had plenty of time to prepare, and the winner of this match will no doubt be propelled up the ladder of the lightweight division. Keep in mind, by the way, that Fisher was knocked out for the first time in his career in his last fight against Hermes Franca.

The current Bodog odds stand at:

Spencer Fisher -260

Sam Stout +200

JON FITCH VS. ROAN CARNEIRO

Having racked up an excellent MMA record of 13-2, Jon Fitch may be the most talented welterweight who you’ve never seen on television. Despite the fact that he has wins over people like Shonie Carter and Thiago Alves, he seems destined to spent most of his career on the UFC undercard. He’s hoping to change that with this fight.

His opponent will be Roan Carneiro, a Brazilian Top Team member who debuted in the UFC in April, winning a unanimous decision over Rich Clementi. In the past Carneiro has lost to Ryo Chonan and Anderson Silva, but he still possesses a formidable ground game.

Currently, Bodog has the odds as follows:

Roan Carneiro +275

Jon Fitch -350

THE REST OF THE CARD

Gleison Tibau (-450) vs. Jeff Cox (+325)

Nate Mohr (-165) vs. Luke Caudillo (+135)

Jason Black (-150) vs. Thiago Tavares (+120)

Luigi Fioravanti (-295) vs. Forrest Petz (+235)

Pete Spratt (+120) vs. Tamdan McCrery (-150)

Drew McFedries (-145) vs. Jordan Radev (+115)

Anthony Johnson vs. Chad Reiner (This fight is schedules, but Bodog did not provide a betting line.)

There’s always something happening in the wacky world of boxing, and we here at Dare to Gamble like to occasionally take a look back at the important events of the week. Ready? Here goes nothing.

INTERNATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAME

Sunday saw a new class inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Chief among the inductees were Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran and Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, both of whom were elected to the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. The other modern fighter chosen was Mexican straw weight champ Ricardo “Finito” Lopez, who retired undefeated and successfully defended his title 21 times.

Other inductees included Argentine trainer Amilcar Brusa, WBC president and Don King puppet Jose Sulaiman, and artist and fight enthusiast Leroy Neiman. Honored posthumously were lightweight Pedro Montanez, light heavyweight Kid Norfolk, heavyweight George Godfrey, manager/matchmaker Cuco Conde, cartoonist TAD Dorgan, and 19th century boxers Dick Curtis and Young Barney Aaron.

COTTO VERSUS JUDAH

On Saturday night, Miguel Cotto successfully defended his belt against Zab Judah, eventually stopping him in the 11th round. A brutal and action-packed contest, many are already referring to it as the fight of the year. You can read our article on the bout by clicking here.

TOMMY GUNN TRIES MMA

Former heavyweight champion Tommy “The Duke” Morrison made his mixed martial arts debut on Friday night by knocking out John Stover, a 36-year-old sheet rock hanger, at 2:08 of the first round.

Held outside of Cliff Castle Casino, Morrison was panting after the match and being booed heavily by the crowd of around 2,500. He was whisked into a minivan and taken from the scene.

The 340 pound Stover took the bout despite a stipulation against grappling. Then, just an hour before the fight, he claims to have been informed that he would not be allowed to strike Morrison with his feet or knees. Essentially, this went from a MMA match to a glorified boxing match. No wonder Morrison broke his nose.

The day before the fight, the 38-year-old Morrison’s former agent, Randy Lang, told ESPN that the fighter was still HIV positive. As you might remember, Morrison had to stop fighting after being diagnosed as HIV positive, but claims to have later learned that the results were not accurate.

To clear all this up, Morrison and his camp are planning to have a very public blood test done later this month to end the debate once and for all. Oh, and he still wants to be heavyweight champ.

TARVER WINS TITLE

Antonio Tarver aka Mason “The Line” Dixon, reclaimed the IBO light heavyweight title on Saturday night by winning a majority decision over the outclassed Elvir Muriqi. This was Tarver’s first fight since losing the title to Bernard Hopkins and co-starring in Rocky Balboa. “The Executioner” has since vacated the title and moved down in weight to fight Winky Wright.

Tarver improved to 25-4, while Muriqi dropped to 34-4. Many believe that Tarver’s next opponent could be undefeated Chad Dawson, who successfully defended his WBC light heavyweight title on the same card by knocking out Jesus “Chuy” Ruiz in the 6th round.

POLISH POWER

Poland’s Tomasz Adamek got a 7th-round TKO victory over Luis Pineda on Saturday to win the vacant IBO cruiserweight title. Adamek improved to 32-1, while Pineda dropped to 21-6.

On the undercard of that fight, Polish heavyweight and walking foul, Andrew Golota, returned from a two-year absence to get a TKO win over Jeremy Bates. While he looked rusty, Golota dominated his opponent and cut him over the eye in the second round.

Golota improved to 39-6-1, while Bates dropped to 21-14-1. If he can string together a few more wins, don’t be surprised to see Golota get a title shot down the road. And considering the quality of the current heavyweight champs, he would certainly have as good a chance as anyone.

SPADAFORA BEHIND BARS…AGAIN

Paul Spadafora, the former IBF lightweight champ, is back in prison for a parole violation. He was arrested on May 30th after ignoring the protection-from-abuse order given to Spadafora’s ex-girlfriend, whom he shot in 2003. Sounds like a healthy relationship, doesn’t it?

LARRY MERCHANT IS THE MAN

I love Larry Merchant. Whether he’s grilling a fighter in a post-fight interview, laughing at his own insane jokes, or acting like Harold Lederman doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about, HBO’s longtime analyst Larry Merchant has always been one of my favorite boxing personalities.

That’s why I was thrilled to see that he and HBO had agreed to a new contract. Reportedly, it’s a two-year deal with a mutual two-year option.

The 76-year-old Merchant will, however, be cutting back on his workload. Max Kellerman, who has functioned as the lead analyst on Boxing After Dark, will share the load and be groomed as Merchant’s eventual successor.

Too bad that the heavyweight division doesn’t have half the quality of HBO’s announce team.

Poker Hearings on IGREA Bill - Underage Gambling

I've been reading the news from Congress from latest rounds of hearings on online poker. It sounds like the online gambling hearing last Friday in front of the House Financial Services Committee was a real circus.

The House Financial Services Committee decides whether the Barney Frank IGREA bill should go before Congress. So these hearings are pivotal for the future of American online poker. Many gambling experts appeared before Congress to inform the congressional committee. Unfortunately, the expert testimony was overshadowed by what I consider a specific case.

ENTER: GREG HOGAN

Greg Hogan is a pastor whose son went to prison for attempted robbery of a bank. Hogan claims his son robbed the bank due to debts from online gambling.

This seems a little dramatic for my tastes.

First, the idea that a kid robbed a bank to pay off online gambling debts seems a little shaky to me. This conjures up Hollywood images of mobsters showing up at the dorms and threatening to break knee caps if the debts aren't paid.

But we're talking about online gambling debts. The most that could have happened was that Greg Jr. had maxed out his credit cards. So Hogan had joined a mass of college students with crippling credit card debt.

ONLINE GAMBLING ENFORCERS?

Were the gambling debts going to force him to miss tuition payments? Lose his car? What was he facing, that Greg Hogan decided he had to rob a bank to get out of his predicament?

Nothing. He didn't want to ask Dad for cash. According to ktrk news, young Greg bet $50 and won up to $300 quickly. So he thought it was easy money. But when he lost all his money, Greg (pictured above) says he was "in a rage". Instead of asking family members to loan him money to pay off his debts, he decided to rob a bank.

That hardly sounds like the act of a rational person. But instead of looking at whatever personal failings Greg Hogan Jr. has which might have led to the bank robbery attempt, it is implied that online gambling will lead to this kind of situation with youths across America.

Don't get me wrong. It's awful that a pastor's kid went to prison. I hate that a gambling addiction may have in some way helped led him to commit crimes. But does that mean everyone's right to privacy should be taken away, because a college student robbed a bank to pay off online gambling debts? I don't think so.

Unfortunately, this seemed to get the entire hearing off on a tangent.

SPIN AND COUNTERSPIN

Shelly Berkley used the Hogan case to push her 1-year study of gambling, which will put legislation off for a year to "study the problem". It also required a long discussion of the technology of online gambling, to ensure that young Americans are not drawn into gambling addiction. Men like Keith Whyte of the National Council on Problem Gambling and Andrew Poole of the Online Services for GamCare were called to inform the committee.

Whyte argued that the technology exists to limit problem gambling. The internet also offers unprecedented opportunities to educate problem gamblers about their condition. Whyte was good enough to mention the truth, that outlawing online poker will only drive the game into the darkest recesses of the internet.

The U.S. government can prohibit gambling, driving legitimate businesses out of the industry. Or it can regulate gambling, to make it safer for gamblers of all stripes, including problem gamblers.

JULIA CARSON OF INDIANA

One bright bit of poker news is when the committee talked about online horse track betting and online casinos. When it was mentioned that horse betting is allowed online, but poker isn't, Representative Julia Carson seemed to be astounded. She asked if someone could bet on the Kentucky Derby online. When said they could, she changed her stance on the gambling bills.

Though Mrs. Carson voted for the UIGEA, she said she would vote for the IGREA. She found the hypocrisy of our current federal gambling legislation a compelling argument.

Put aside the fact that U.S. representatives don't understand the basic arguments of the legislation they are voting on. The UIGEA was tacked on to the Safe Port Act at the last minute, so a lot of congressmen had no idea what they were voting into law.

I guess that's what these hearings are for. We are trying to introduce our politicians about proposed new poker laws. It's frustrating, but at least this issues are being brought up in committee. We will need all the Julia Carsons we can get, if we are going to overturn the existing gambling laws.

Poker Hearings on IGREA Bill - Underage Gambling

McDermott Poker Tax Bill Introduced in Congress

In the latest online poker news, U.S. Congressman Jim McDermott introduced a bill this congressional session to tax poker online. The bill is called the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative. The SSIGI is considered a companion bill to the Barney Frank IGREA bill. McDermott's proposed law would set a 2% tax on all U.S. online poker bets.

The SSIGI would be enforced by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Online poker sites would have to be licensed by the FCEN.

Shelly Berkley is the co-sponsor of this initiative by Rep. McDermott. She is also sponsoring a bill which would fund a year long study of the online poker industry. This study is meant to settle concerns that online gambling lures youths into problem gambling.

WHO IS JIM McDERMOTT?

Jim McDermott has sat in Congress since 1989. He is known as one of the more liberal members of Congress, occupying a secure seat out of Washington State. In the 2006 election, McDermott won with nearly 80% of the vote.

McDermott is an advocate of univeral health care. He was a prominent member of the committee which investigated Newt Gingrich for ethics violations in 1998. At one time, opponents of the congressman called him "Baghdad Jim" McDermott, because of a 2002 trip to Baghdad in the run-up to the 2003 Iraqi War.

McDermott was ridiculed at the time for opposing the war. He said that President Bush was misleading the public about the reasons for war and went on to say we would not find Weapons of Mass Destruction in post-war Iraq. Few of McDermott's critics who called him names at the time have admitted that McDermott was right about the WMDs.

THE 2% TAX

I doubt online poker players are going to be too pleased with an added 2% tax on gambling revenues. Personally, I prefer the Robert Wexler solution, specifically the Wexler poker skill carveout which is also circulating in the Congress.

McDermott's bill is an example of tax-and-spend politics which liberals are often criticized for. But this is the problem once the government gets its hand into an issue; it never really takes its hand back out.

This is the price we have to pay for the Republicans pushing through the UIGEA late in the last session of the 109th Congress. One of the incentives to get Congress to act is to lure them with promises of billions in tax revenues. Advocates of this 2% tax say it will raise between $6 and $25 billion in its first five years.

McDermott Poker Tax Bill Introduced in Congress

Wexler Poker Skill Carveout for UIGEA

Florida Congressman Robert Wexler has introduced a bill in Congress to carve out an exemption for poker in the Federal Wire Act of 1961. This skill games carveout would apply to enforcement of the UIGEA law passed in 2006, because the UIGEA simply created a viable means to enforce the Wire Act.

Wexler's bill argues that poker is a game of skill, not of chance. Since it is a game of skill, poker should not be included in the list of other casino games which depend almost entirely on the luck of the cards.

This bill is call the Skill Game Protection Act. It hopes to cover games like poker, chess, mahjong and bridge. If the bill succeeds, online payment processing companies will be able to transact money transfers between poker players and online poker rooms. The Poker Players Alliance already has come out in favor of the bill.

But the question remains; can House Rep. Wexler make his case?

POKER IS A SKILL

Wexler is right, of course. Anyone who has played poker for any length of time knows this to be true. Poker professionals like Doyle Brunson haven't made a living playing poker all these years because they're lucky.

It's because they have the skill to consistently win the game. Skilled poker play isn't only about knowing the mathematical probabilities of the game. The skill poker players need is the ability to "put a player on a hand". That is, you need to study your opponent and know when that opponent is playing a hand from strength or weakness. Reading an opponent is a skill.

Masking your own intentions is the opposite side of the coin. This is also a skill. Varying your bets enough to make yourself unpredictable is important. Making sure your opponent can't read you requires what can best be described acting skill. Bluffing a player out of a hand, or knowing when to lay down a hand, are all skills.

Robert Wexler is talking about the game-within-the-game, which all of us poker players know about. Poker isn't simply a matter of getting lucky cards.

OTHER GAMBLING LEGISLATION

The SGPA is the fourth gambling legislation bill introduced this session of Congress. Barney Frank introduced the IGREA bill. Jim McDermott sponsored a companion bill to the IGREA which would install a 2% tax on IGREA-regulated gambling. Shelley Berkley wants a year long study about the dangers of gambling.

All of this activity is a sign of the interest in reasonable gambling regulation in the U.S. Outlawing poker will simply drive it underground, while regulating could lead to billions of dollars in tax revenues.

Cotto vs. Judah - Fight Results

For those of you who didn’t get to see it live, here’s an update on last night’s Zab Judah vs. Miguel Cotto fight.

Judah came out strong and looked to be his usual incredibly fast self, but Cotto hit him with a low blow in the first and the third rounds. After the second foul, Cotto was penalized a point, but his opponent never seemed to recover from the shot. Cotto later stated that the low blows weren‘t intentional.

Cotto took over after the third round, throwing body shot after body shot. Judah suffered a cut to his right eye, but Cotto also sported a badly cut lip which caused blood to drip down onto his chest throughout the slugfest.

In the ninth round, Judah was dropped to a knee after a volley of shots from Cotto. A left hook floored Judah in the eleventh. He managed to get to his feet, but Cotto charged in and battered the former undisputed welterweight champ until referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stopped the bout.

Judah trailed 97-91 on all three scorecards. This was Cotto’s second successful defense of his WBA welterweight belt. He earned $2.5 million plus a piece of the pay-per-view, while Judah got $1 million and a slice of the pay-per-view pie.

The bout will be shown for free this Saturday on HBO along with live coverage of the Lovemore N’Dou vs. Paul Malignaggi fight.

THE UNDERCARD

On the undercard, junior lightweight Humberto Soto set up a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao by beating his brother, Bobby Pacquiao, with a seventh-round knockout. Soto dominated from the opening moments of the match, eventually dispatching Pacquiao with a right hand followed by a hard shot to the body.

In further action, welterweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. got revenge against Grover Wiley, the man who finally forced his legendary father into retirement on September 17th, 2005. Chavez Jr. used the family’s trademark left hook to the body to drop his opponent three times on the way to a third-round knockout.

Junior middleweight Yuri Foreman also won a split decision over Anthony Thompson. Two judges scored the fight 97-93 and 96-94 for Foreman, while the third judge gave it to Thompson, 96-94. It is now expected that Foreman will receive a shot at the 154-pound title held by Sergei Dzindziruk.

Sopranos - Paris Hilton and UFC 72 - The Best of Dare to Gamble

What a wacky week in the world of gambling.

PARIS HILTON BOUND FOR JAIL

This week will always be known as the week Paris Hilton went back to jail. After leaving the MTV Music Awards to turn herself into jail, Paris spent three days behind bars. She was placed into house arrest for one day by the Sheriff's Office. The very next day, the paparazzi swarmed the jail, as the sheriff's men were dispatched to the Hilton House to drag her to court.

In the interim, the Hiltons were planning a "house arrest party" for Paris. The judge packed Paris off to jail a second time, as she screamed for her mother. We were left wondering how Bodog would pay off on the bet about how many days Paris would spend in jail. Craaa-zeee stuff!

OTHER BODOG PROP BETS

Not all of the latest bodog bets are as unstable, though the latest Larry Flynt sex bounty gets close. The founder of Hustler Magazine is offering $1 million for anyone who can show proof they had extramarital sex with a Washington politician. This is the same method Flynt used to help bring down Speaker of the House Elect Bob Livingston back in the late nineties.

Dare To also covered wagers on the Sopranos final episode.

FIGHT CLUB

We also provided a preview of UFC 72 Victory and its betting odds. Dare To Gamble included a preview of the Forrest Griffin-Hector Ramirez
and the Rich Franklin-Yushin Okami MMA fights.

For hardcore fans of fighting, we included the results of K-1 Dynamite.

There were a couple of boxing matches which went off this week. The only remaining American heavyweight champ, Shannon Briggs, went down to defeat to yet another Russian fighter. We had the Briggs-Ibragimov boxing results here.

Also covered was the Miguel Cotto-Zab Judah fight, which many are saying is the fight of the year. The unbeaten Cotto defeated Judah in an 11-round war. With both fighters bleeding from cuts, Cotto finally got the knock out of JUdah late in the fight at raucous Madison Square Garden. Cotto went on to say he wants a fight with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather.

GAMBLING LAW

This was a big week for gambling legislation. Daretogamble provided an update on the neteller frozen funds story. It appears Neteller customers might finally get their accounts unfrozen in the near future.

We also covered the Google bans on all gambling advertisements. Is Google making a moral stand, or is it preparing to follow Yahoo! into the online gambling business? Check out this article for analysis.

The FBI is investigating the Second Life virtual world, for possible online gambling law violations. In a story which underscores what an immense waste of time it is to have U.S. law enforcement patrolling internet casino gaming, the FBI probed the Second Life online casinos.

Meanwhile, a new online gambling advocacy group sued U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The imega online gambling lawsuit states that it is unconstitutional for the Department of Justice to enforce existing online gambling laws.

Most importantly, hearings got underway this week in Washington to discuss the future of online gambling. We gave a preview of the hearing on internet gambling, which is another in a continuing series of articles. Check back with Daretogamble later this week for news and analysis on Friday's hearings.

OCHO CINCO

And if all that gambling legislation is too heavy for you, we end with a heartwarming story out of Cincinnati. Bengals Pro Bowl receiver, Chad Johnson, raced a race horse for charity this week. We love everything NFL at Dare To Gamble, and the chad johnson at the horse races story is one of our favorites in a while around here. After winning, Johnson called out Floyd Mayweather, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Jeff Gordon. Personally, I think Ocho Cinco could take Jeff Gordon in a foot race.

UFC 72: Victory - Fight Preview and Bodog Odds

UFC 72: Victory will take place on June 16th, 2007 at The Odyssey in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This will be the third UFC event to take place in the United Kingdom and the first to be held in Ireland. Here’s how the card is currently shaping up:

UFC 72 CARD

Rich “Ace” Franklin vs. Yushin Okami (Middleweight)

Forrest Griffin vs. Hector “Sick Dog” Ramirez (Light Heavyweight)

Tyson Griffin vs. Clay Guida (Lightweight)

Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald vs. Rory “Outburst” Singer (Middleweight)

Tom Murphy vs. Jake O’Brien (Heavyweight)

Eddie Sanchez vs. Colin Robinson (Heavyweight)

Dustin Hazelett vs. Stevie “The Smiling Assassin” Lynch (Welterweight)

Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis vs. Jason Tan (Welterweight)

Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith vs. Ed “Short Fuse” Herman (Middleweight)

RICH FRANKLIN VS. YUSHIN OKAMI

Franklin was originally scheduled to fight Martin Kampmann, but the fight had to be changed when Kampmann suffered an injury.

Rich Franklin is the former UFC Middleweight champion. The ex-math teacher lost the title in brutal fashion to Anderson “The Spider” Silva at UFC 64. In that fight, Franklin found himself locked in a Thai-clinch and forced to endure a series of devastating knees. Following the fight, he had to undergo surgery to repair a nasal fracture.

In his return fight, Franklin defeated Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald by TKO after his opponent’s corner threw in the towel between the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Afterwards, it was announced that Franklin will receive a rematch at some point in the future with Silva.

In the meantime, he will face off against Yushin Okami. Okami made his UFC debut at UFC 62, defeating Alan Belcher by unanimous decision. Then, at UFC 64, he defeated Kalib Starnes by TKO. He forced Rory Singer to submit due to strikes at UFC 66, and we later went on to beat Mike Swick at UFC 69.

Currently, the Bodog odds for this fight stand as follows:

Rich Franklin -200

Yushin Okami +160

FORREST GRIFFIN VS. HECTOR RAMIREZ

Griffin has suffered some tough losses as of late, but he continues to bounce back. After losing a controversial decision to Tito Ortiz in April of 2006, he rebounded to win a decision victory over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 62. At UFC 66, he was upset by Keith Jardine and suffered a TKO loss at 4:41 of the first round.

His opponent, Hector Ramirez, lost his UFC debut at UFC 65. His overall MMA record is 6-2-1. With Griffin being such a fan favorite, there’s no doubt that Ramirez was selected to be a tough but very beatable opponent for Forrest. Of course, the world of MMA has shown that almost anybody can defeat anybody else on a given night. Still, when the odds are released for this one, expect Forrest Griffin to be the overwhelming favorite.

It’s Friday, which means that the 2007 World Series of Poker is now in its 8th day of competition. As play heads into the weekend, let’s pause for a moment and look back at what went down on Thursday in Las Vegas.

2007 WSOP - DAY 7 RECAP

Event #8 - $1,000 No Limit Hold’em (w/ Rebuys)

While the early play was marked with loads of rebuys to replenish dwindling stacks of chips, things finally settled down and Michael Chu, a Los Angeles stock trader, claimed his first WSOP bracelet. Even more impressive is the fact that he never needed to use the rebuy option. He walked away with $585,744 for the win, and Tommy Vu and Barry Cales took 2nd and 3rd place.

Event #9 - $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo Split

John Varner and Jordan Morgan were in the lead as the final table got started, but Alex Kravchenko moved up from 5th place and eventually took the lead and the win. Bryan Devonshire took 2nd place in the event, while John Varner held on for 3rd. Kravchenko became the first Russian citizen to win a WSOP event, and he pocketed a respectable $228,446.

Event #10 - $2,000 No Limit Hold’em

As Thursday came to a close, Justin Bonomo went on a tear and racked up over two million in chips on the way to the final table. His nearest competition is Hunter Frey with $852,000 and Michael Banducci with $717,000.

Event #11 - $5,000 Seven Card Stud

As the second day of the event began, numerous big name players were still in contention, including Johnny Chan. But Chan busted out in 18th place, disappointing fans who were hoping that he could capture a career-record 11th bracelet. Phil Ivey took the chip lead at one point, and he made the final table in a solid second place ($322,000). The leader going into the final table was David Oppenheim with a commanding $609,000.

Event #12 - $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Six-Handed Event

In only 11 hours, the field of 1,427 players was trimmed down to sparse 127. By the end of the day, only 62 remained. The leader at the end was J.C. Tran, who is well on his way to winning Player of the Year honors. He had $212,000 as play ended on Thursday, with Eric Haber entrenched in second place. Players such as John Cernuto, Joe Awada and Erik Seidel were all still very much alive.

Over 9 ½ -105

Under 9 ½ -135

FIGHT PREVIEW

Miguel Angel Cotto

Miguel Cotto has a professional record of 29-0 with 24 KO’s. He hails from Caguas, Puerto Rico and is 5’8”, 147 pounds. He is 26 years old and trained by Evangelista Cotto.

Style

Cotto likes to come straight forward and punish his opponents with blistering shots to the body. His left hook is a particularly dangerous weapon, and he is adept at wearing down opponents over the course of the fight.

Opponents of Note

Just over 3 months ago, Cotto achieved a TKO victory over Oktay Urkal after his corner threw in the towel. Before that, he picked up wins over Carlos Quintana (TKO 5), Paul Malignaggi (UD 12), Ricardo Torres (KO 7), DeMarcus Corley (TKO 5), Kelson Pinto (TKO 6), Lovemore N’dou (UD 12) and Victoriano Sosa (TKO 4).

Strengths

Cotto has a tremendous left hook, and he is quite skilled at finding ways to use it. With power in both hands, his favorite tactic is to just keep chopping away at his opponents until they fall like a tree. Over the course of his career, only five of his fights have went the distance, and two of those were four-rounders when he was younger.

Weaknesses

Cotto has a tendency to get involved in wars, and his defense is average at best. He takes too many shots, and he’s been down on the canvas more than once in his career. In his last fight just over three months ago, he suffered a deep cut over his left eye from a head butt.

Zab “Super” Judah

Judah has a record of 34-4 with 25 KO’s. He is from Brooklyn, New York and is 29-years-old. He is 5’7” and weighs 146 ¾ pounds. Judah is trained by his father, Yoel Judah.

Style

A boxer-puncher with tremendous speed, Judah has some of the fastest hands in the sport. A southpaw, he usually jumps on opponents from the opening bell and wears them down with a combination of lightning-fast combinations and surprising power. He is also an effective counter-puncher.

Opponents of Note

Judah has wins over Cory Spinks (TKO 9), DeMarcus Corley (SD 12), Terron Millett (TKO 4), Wilfredo Negron (KO 4) and Darryl Tyson (TKO 11). His losses have come against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (L UD 12), Carlos Baldomir (L UD 12), Cory Spinks (L UD 12) and Kostya Tszyu (L TKO 2).

Strengths

Judah has power in both hands and blinding speed. His southpaw style proves an additional challenge for opponents. He is excellent at feinting, moving and counter-punching. Judah is very confident in his abilities and trains very hard. He can string together combinations as well as any man in the sport.

Weaknesses

His confidence sometimes works against him, and Judah has a tendency to get cocky in the ring and eat leather. He’s been knocked down on several occasions. He also tends to be immature, and this has resulted in a number of fines, suspensions, and general displays of dirty tactics and poor sportsmanship. While he has all the physical tools, Judah has yet to prove that he can win the truly big fights.

Fantasy Football News Update - Green and Culpepper

The most fanatical form of sports betting is about to start again. That's right, it's almost time for the 2007 fantasy football season.

For all those fantasy owners out there, here's some news from the NFL world.

TRENT GREEN IS A DOLPHIN

In the latest NFL news, Trent Green was traded to the Dolphins for a 5th rounder, which makes Daunte Culpepper expendable. Now Culpepper is asking to be released by Miami.

Initially, Daunte wanted the chance to compete alongside Trent Green for the starting job. He said all the right things for a couple of days. But when Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller told Culpepper he would not be with the Dolphins in '07, Daunte asked for his immediate release. He claims that with his $5.5 million contract for next year, no team is going to trade for him.

To the credit of the Dolphins management, they say they are not going to hold Culpepper hostage--a back-handed shot at the Kansas City Chiefs. They are on record saying they will try to shop him to teams, then release him if there is no interest.

According to reports, Green and Culpepper talked for a few minutes during this week's minicamp. Little was said about the quarterback situation. Green claims the two talked about rehab from knee injuries, something Green has prior experience with. But Trent Green certainly must have empathy for Daunte Culpepper's situation, after his own recent troubles with NFL management.

CARL PETERSON IS A BASTARD

The much-anticipated Trent Green trade came down last week, after two months of speculation by NFL insiders. The Green Saga was the story of the NFL post-draft offseason, with Chiefs and Dolphins fans coming down on either side of the debate.

Chiefs GM Carl Peterson wanted a 4th rounder for Green, a more reasonable demand after originally setting the price for the 37-year old at a 2nd rounder. The Dolphins were offering a 6th rounder, which Peterson considered insulting. After two months of wrangling, Miami eventually decided to negotiate. They eventually offered a 5th which could become a 4th conditionally. The Chiefs took the bargain.

WHERE DOES DAUNTE GO?

It looks to me like Daunte expects to be a starting quarterback, but the truth of the matter is that most teams already have a starter pencilled in this time of year. If a team doesn't, it's already in a lot of trouble.

But there are a couple of teams which continue to come up in speculation.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Byron Leftwich is in the last year of his contract. He has been solid enough as a starter, but prone to yearly injuries. And when Leftwich inevitably went out the last two seasons, backup David Gerrard has not always been up to the task.

This is a situation where Culpepper could come in as the backup for a year, with the opportunity to be the starter on a playoff contender in just one season. With Leftwich's injury history, Culpepper could be on the field a significant stretch of time this year.

You must remember that Culpepper is a Florida native. One of the reasons the Dolphins were such a natural fit was Daunte's ties to south Florida. So given his choice, Daunte might want to stay in the Sunshine State. Tampa just signed Jeff Garcia, so it looks like Jacksonville is the next closest option to home.

Also keep in mind that ex-Vikings Head Coach Mike Tice is an assistant in Jacksonville these days. He might lobby on behalf of a Culpepper signing.

On the down side, the Jags are trying to convince Leftwich they want him for the years ahead. If that's the case, the Jags might not want to damage the relationship with Byron by bringing in a big name backup. I would say the signing of Culpepper is a sign the Jacksonville front office isn't as sold on Leftwich as they let on.

BALTIMORE RAVENS

Another team speculated about is the Baltimore Ravens. They brought in Steve McNair to lead them to a SuperBowl last year, and McNair led them to a 13-3 record and a hard-fought loss to the eventual champion Indianapolis Colts. The only problem is, there isn't a whole lot of air left in Air McNair. He's one of the toughest players in the league, but his body has taken a lot of punishment over the years. McNair won't be the answer for much longer.

Since Kyle Boller never was the answer, bringing in a younger talent like Culpepper might appeal to the Ravens. It's not that Culpepper is young anymore, but you would think he has more tread on the tire than McNair.

Culpepper could serve under McNair this year, healing his knee. The two might compete for the job next year, or Culpepper could inherit the job at that point. The Ravens are a team where Culpepper could flourish, since they use a defense first strategy and only need one or two big plays a game from their offense.

THE FANTASY IMPACT

Ultimately, I imagine Culpepper will be a late round selection in most fantasy drafts. If he goes to a team with an often-injured starter or an otherwise powerful offense, you might consider drafting him in the late-late rounds of you draft. He is only three seasons removed from one of the top 3 fantasy seasons ever for a quarterback.

The sad thing, once I started looking around the league, I don't see that many teams who would sign Culpepper as a starter this year. So I think this is a situation where Culpepper does like Garcia last year; sign a one-year contract and hope you get to show your talents at some point.

THEY'RE BETTER THAN KENNISON AND PARKER

As for Trent Green, he will have targets in Chris Chambers, Marty Booker and Ted Ginn Jr. That's a much better receiving corps than he's had in all those years in Kansas City, where he had 4 4,000 yard seasons. He won't have the safety blanket that is Tony Gonzales, and remember the Dolphins released talented yet troubled tight end Randy McMichael.

I imagine Green will be in the 10-12 range in quarterbacks, which means he'll be one of the last starters taken or the first backups taken in most drafts. He is 37 and had a vicious concussion last year. There's no telling if he will ever be the quarterback he was three seasons ago.

But as a backup on a fantasy roster, I see reasons to take this guy. He's back in Cam Cameron's offense, with better targets than he's had in years. If the team can block up front for Green and Ronnie Brown, then I can see Trent Green having one or two more solid years.

Paris Hilton Goes Back to Jail - Cries for Mom

In a stunning reversal reported in this Breitbart article, Paris Hilton is returning to jail only one day after her release.

A day ago, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department sent Paris home for 40 days of Hilton house arrest. Judge Michael T. Sauer, who apparently wasn't consulted by the Sheriff, was not happy. He had specifically ruled that Ms. Hilton would not be allowed to spend her time under house arrest. Word late yesterday was the judge might hold the sheriff department in contempt of court.

Instead, he ordered Paris Hilton back to the same jail cell. He even ordered her to serve her full 45 day sentence, instead of the initial 23 day sentence she had. This would seem to punish the sheriff's department, who complained that the Paris jailing was an undue drain on their manpower.

Driven To Court in Handcuffs

Earlier in the day, a court spokesman had announced Paris Hilton would not have to attend the court case. She would be able to testify over the phone.

The judge reversed that decision. Instead, he sent a sheriff's car to escort Hilton to the court. He wanted to have her explain what medical condition it was that kept her from doing jail time, and wanted her in court to show the condition. When Paris Hilton was unable to make a compelling case, the judge gave her the new sentence.

Mom!

As Paris was being taken away into custody, she was heard to cry "Mom!" at her mother in the audience. Pictures showed Paris crying in the back seat of the police car.

My only question is: how does Bodog judge that Paris Hilton props bet.

Paris Hilton Goes Home - House Arrest Instead of Jail

Paris Hilton spent around 3 days in jail.

It appears her time in an L.A. county jail was spent crying uncontrollably. After her psychiatrist visited her two days in a row, he convinced the sheriff's office that Paris was near a nervous breakdown. Other stories mention that she had an apparent medical condition.

With the Hilton lawyer hinting that her stay might lead to permanent psychological damage, it appears the county jail got nervous that the Hiltons were setting up a major lawsuit. So "everyone agreed" to let her go free.

FREE PARIS HILTON

Well, not quite free. The authorities have now placed Paris under house arrest. She'll be fitted with a bracelet for the next 40 days. At least that's the idea. My guess is she "tries" to slit her wrist over the weekend and the courts decide that house arrest is too cruel for this princess.

You'll see her at an awards show or fashion premiere by the end of next week.

What a crock!

Hopefully, though, this is the beginning of the end of the Paris Hilton Phenomenon. That's probably wishful thinking on my part. But with Paris making herself look like a bigger fool than ever, the public might be close to finally having their fill of Paris Hilton.

No. That will never happen.

More likely, Paris continues being America's favorite punchline, with the jokes focusing on her jail visit. She probably gets more attention than ever.

PARIS IS BURNING

Speaking of which, some of the theories about her "medical condition" had me laughing. Besides the usual speculation about vicodin, cocaine and alcohol withdrawals, my favorite was that her emotional outburst had caused her herpes to flair up.

On the other hand, I'm just appalled that I saw someone at that coverage of the press conference mention that Paris Hilton is a role model for young girls out there. That was actually one of the reasons given for releasing her early.

Yeah, we want to teach young girls that if you whine and cry enough, you'll get whatever you want...especially if you have a lawyer present.

Anyway, now's the time to review the Paris Hilton props bets from Bodog. If you want to review the action youself, here's the original Paris Hilton props bet.

How many nights will Paris spend in jail: -1.5 or +1.5?

The right answer was +1.5. It's amazing how close Bodog got on this one. As I always say, the oddsmakers know more than anybody on these things.

How many nights (in specific) while Paris spend in jail?

It looks like the 3-7 nights for 2-to-1 odds was the right answer, though we may have to get the final rundown to see if it wasn't only 2 night at 6-to-5 odds.

Will Paris get into a physical altercation in jail?

By all accounts, that never happened. As we mentioned here, don't bet on it, since she was kept away from the rest of the jail population.

Will Governor Schwarzenegger pardon Paris Hilton?

The answer to this one is no, unless we learn that The Terminator has infiltrated the L.A. County sheriff's office.

Online Gambling Lawsuit by IMEGA Against Alberto Gonzales

The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association is suing U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The IMEGA is suing stop enforcement of internet gambling laws by the U.S. government.

If IMEGA's case is heard, the court will grant a temporary injunction against online gambling law enforcment. The lawsuit says that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is unconstitutional, that it infringes on Americans' constitutional rights. Because the UIGEA is chiefly enforced by Alberto Gonzales, the lawsuit is aimed at George Bush's favorite legal counsel.

THE LAWSUIT

The UIGEA lawsuit has chosen two battle lines. One, it says that Americans have constitutional protections against government intrusion into peoples' private morality. Two, it says that the enforcement of the gambling bill through wire transfers sets a dangerous precedent for the future of online commerce.

I'm been saying this for the better part of a year now. I've always said it somewhat facetiously, but I think it makes the point. There are no doubt people who max out their credit cards buying too much merchandise on ebay and Amazon. If we are going to start protecting people from spending too much money on gambling online, why not write laws to make it harder to buy stuff off of eBay?

HERE THEY GO AGAIN

Once the precedent is set, the history is that government doesn't know when to quit. If we let the government start telling us how we need to spend our money online, they'll start getting ideas about other ways to police the internet.

At the very least, this underscores the arguments being made by many that the online gambling law will be difficult to enforce. Not only will it prove to be a legal slippery slope, but it will waste valuable taxpayer money and law enforcement manpower. I guess that's said enough about enough issues that it loses its impact, but the fact that the Feds are wasting our money on this nonsense still bears repeating.

Anyway, this iMEGA group is brand new, apparently formed specifically for this lawsuit. Here's hoping their case is successful.

Neteller Close to Returning Frozen Funds

Neteller, a leader in online money transfers, has announced that all gambling funds will be returned to U.S. customers as soon as possible. At the moment, they are still in the process of working with U.S. authorities as part of an investigation into possible Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act violations.

Despite the delays, a distribution plan has been agreed upon. In accordance with this plan, customers with money currently frozen in their accounts will receive an email notification telling them when it’s allowable to sign into their accounts and withdraw any remaining funds.

According to a Neteller release:

"The agreed Distribution Plan details the process and mechanisms for the return of funds to US customers. US customers will be able to access their NETELLER accounts online for a certain time and make a request for their funds. In accordance with NETELLER’s Terms of Use, no interest on account balances will be paid. NETELLER will not charge fees to customers to process requests for funds. Funds will be distributed either by electronic transfer to the bank account on record with NETELLER or by a cheque to be sent to a mailing address as confirmed by the customer.

If a US customer has a bank account already registered with NETELLER, funds transfer will be by electronic transfer subject to confirmation by the customer that the registered bank account remains valid. US customers will receive the entire balance of funds in their account; no requests for partial payments will be processed. US customers cannot use their accounts for any transaction other than to request the funds."

Since the company’s two founders were arrested several months ago, Neteller claims that over $55 million dollars have been seized by the U.S. Department of Justice. Afterwards, the company decided to freeze all U.S. accounts, leaving some unlucky customers with 5 digit balances suspended in their accounts.

The distribution plan is expected to begin on July 13th, 2007. If you’ve got money stuck in Neteller, this would be an excellent time to make sure that your email address, billing address and bank information is current.

In the meantime, take a look at these article about the Bush administration’s ridiculous war on gambling:

Google Bans ALL Gambling Advertisements

Looks like Internet giant Google has decided to take additional measures in their effort to stamp out any online gambling advertising. Up until recently, both Google and Yahoo were banning advertisements on pay-to-play online gambling websites in the UK, but now Google has extended that ban to all online gambling sites - even the ones where no money is exchanged.

ANARCHY IN THE UK

With Yahoo having already jumped into the realm of real-money poker, one has to wonder if this move is being made as a precursor to Google’s entry into the online gambling industry? A Google spokesperson released the following statement:

"Google has always prohibited the advertising of things like bingo, poker and online casinos. However, having looked at this issue very carefully and considered the views of our users, we have decided to extend our policy. We will no longer take ads for sites that promote gambling related content or gambling tutorials or whose primary purpose is `playing for fun', gambling or casino games of skill.
While we respect people's differing views on gambling - and support freedom of expression - we believe that this new policy is simpler for everyone to understand and more in tune with users' wishes.”

SAY WHAT!?!

More in tune with users’ wishes? Do you mean to tell me that people actually write to Google and complain about gambling advertising? Okay, there’s always going to be that fringe element of kooks who will actually take the time to write a complaint, but come on; I’m not buying this lame excuse for a second. I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I firmly believe that something else is going on here.

In times past, gambling sites have tried to get around any bans by advertising free section of their website. They even went so far as to have separate domain names for free gambling, with links to their pay sites. But now that will all be a thing of the past. In fact, MSN is now the only major search engine to allow advertising for pay-to-play gambling websites in the UK, but one has to wonder how long that will last?

It finally came down to Mike Spegal and Gavin Smith in heads-up play. After a dinner break, the blinds moved up to 20K/40K, and Spegal had a chip lead of $81,000.

On Hand 129, Smith raised from the button to 120K. Spegal re-raised to 240K and Gavin Smith went all-in. Spegal called and revealed his card to be an Ace and Ten of Spades. Smith, meanwhile, had pocket Fives.

The flop came Jack of Diamonds, Six of Spades and Three of Spades. No help for Smith and a possible Flush for Spegal. The turn brought a Queen of Spades and that was that. Mike Spegal was the new Pot Limit Hold’em champ with $252,290.

Sopranos Final Episode on HBO

The final episode of The Sopranos is this Sunday on HBO. After this weekend, there will be no more new episodes. That means a lot of characters are dying in the finale.

Bodog is taking bets on who survives and who dies in the final episode. If you've been watching these past six seasons and know who will get whacked, you might as well make a bet on it. Here's an example of the wagers at Bodog, though this is hardly the full chalk board.

Does Tony Soprano live through the final episode of The Sopranos?

Yes -300

No +200

Does Phil Leotardo live through the final episode of The Sopranos?

Yes +170

No -250

If either Phil or Tony are killed, which of the two will be killed first?

Phil Leotardo -300

Tony Soprano +200

Does Paulie Walnuts live through the final episode?

Yes -200

No +150

We've been covering this story all season. Bodog has had a huge number of bets involving the Sopranos death spiral. Here are the results of the already-resolved earlier bets, as well as some analysis of the coming finale.

Will Paulie or Christopher die first?

That would be Christopher. He was choked to death by Tony, after Christopher tried to leave the mob and then murdered a writer.

Will Bobby or Silvio die first?

That would be Bobby. After Tony curbed stomped a Lupertazzi crew leader, Leotardo orders the killing of Tony and his men. Bobby is executed, while Silvio winds up in a coma. Tony is in hiding as the final episode begins.

TONY STRIKES BACK

Looks like it's time Tony strike back at Phil Leotardo. Phil's been on a nice killing spree lately, so I'm guessing Tony takes Phil down in this final episode. Take the Phil death bet, if you must, though you'll have to bet a lot to get a little.

WILL TONY LIVE?

This is a tough one. I've heard some speculation that this will be a "life goes on" ending, where Tony goes back to his life of crime and more or less "lives happily ever after." I personally don't see the writers doing that, because it hardly adds resolution to the story of Tony Soprano.

I'm guessing that Tony either takes control of the whole operation, or gets whacked. I would probably lean towards Phil dying and Tony ascending, because the writers will have a hard time killing their favorite character.

DR. MELFI

I wouldn't be surprised if Dr. Melfi gets whacked, simply because she knows too much. I wouldn't think that if she had ended her visits from Tony in the final episode. Having this happen in the second to final episode is a little suspicious to me. It implies that there's on last twist. This would certainly underscore the fact that you don't want to be near these people, because the mob life destroys every normal life it touches.

Anyway, I can't wait for this episode. Take you bets now, because you don't have much longer.

Slots Machine News at Indiana Horse Tracks

Government bargains can sometimes be like bargains with Darth Vader.

You know, where Lando Calrissian betrays Han to save Cloud City, then Vader begins to double-cross Lando almost immediately?

"I am altering the bargain. Pray I don't alter it further."

Take the state of Indiana, for example.

Around three months ago, Indiana lawmakers made a bargain with two local horse tracks. In exchange for $250 million dollars a year paid to the state, the race tracks could run a certain number of slot machines at their sites. This would make these tracks so-called "racinos".

Apparently, the slots concessions were grossly undervalued by the state.

This opened the door for the race tracks to sell their slot machine permits at a large profit. When rumors this might happen hit the state capitol, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels didn't like it one bit. Now, the Fort Wayne journalgazette news reports that Indiana politicians are altering the bargain just three months into the deal.

GREED IS GOOD

They want their cut of the action, although it received its yearly $250,000,000 cut of the action already.

Indiana has an out for this kind of contingency. If the slots permits are sold within five years, the state gaming commission would have to approve the transaction.

Now, Gov Daniels wants the Gaming Commission and Horse Racing Commission to adopt "emergency rules". These rules would stipulate that an approved sell of the permits would have to take into account "the taxpayers of the state".

In other words, the new stipulation is a sell of the permits would require the state to get another share of the profits. Guess it's the price of doing business.

LeBron James and NBA Finals - Bodog Odds

LeBron James aka “King James” and “The Chosen One” - a 6’8”, 240 pound phenom and, at only 22 years of age, the current NBA player most likely to meet the lofty standards established by former superstars Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

Chosen with the first overall pick in 2003 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, James was voted NBA Rookie of the Year. In every season since, he has received All-NBA and All-Star honors. In 2006 and 2007, he has led the Cavs to playoff berths, and this year’s appearance in the NBA Finals marks the first visit in franchise history.

Just take a look at Game 5 against the Detroit Pistons, and you’ll see how far he’s progressed as a player. With only average talent around him, James exploded for 48 points (a Cavs record for a playoff game), 9 boards and 7 assists. In the hard-fought double-overtime victory, he virtually dominated the waning minutes of the contest, scoring the last 25 of the team’s points. NBA analyst Marv Albert went so far as to call it “one of the greatest performances in NBA history.”

But now King James and the Cavaliers face the San Antonio Spurs. While Tim Duncan and company tend to cause fans to stifle yawns with their methodical style of play, there’s no denying that their tactics are effective. They’re also not afraid to get their hands dirty, as evidenced by their controversial series with the Phoenix Suns.

BODOG ODDS FOR LEBRON JAMES

Throughout the regular season, LeBron averaged 27.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and his season high was 41 points (but don’t forget about that 48 vs. Detroit in the playoffs). Without a doubt, the league would love to see him lead the Cavs to victory and truly become the face of the NBA. But the Spurs may have a little something to say about that.

Game One, which airs Thursday night on ABC, will give basketball fans a good idea of how the rest of the series will play out. Will LeBron dazzle the opposition with his pure athleticism, or will the Spurs grind him down with their relentless team play?

Fortunately for sports bettors, Bodog is offering some odds in order to help answer these questions. They include:

What will LeBron James’ first basket in Game 1 be? (Max Bet $100)

Two Point Field Goal 2/5

Three Point Field Goal 3/1

Free Throw 1/1

Highest scoring quarter by LeBron James in Game 1? (Max $100)

1st Quarter 8/5

2nd Quarter 2/1

3rd Quarter 9/5

4th Quarter 3/2

Number of fouls for LeBron James in Game 1? (Max $100)

No Fouls 7/2

1 Foul 9/5

2 Fouls 3/2

3 Fouls 9/5

4 Fouls 3/1

5 Fouls 7/2

Fouls Out 5/1

Total points by LeBron James in Game 1? (Max $500)

Over 26 -115

Under 26 -115

Hearing on Internet Gambling This Friday

As the battle over online gambling rages on, there’s finally a bit of good news. This Friday, June 8th, at 10 a.m. on Capitol Hill, the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services will be conducting a hearing to talk about the possible regulation of online gambling in the United States.

Entitled ‘Can Internet Gambling Be Effectively Regulated to Protect Consumers and the Payment System?’, the hearing will include an impressive list of witnesses who were invited to testify. They include professional poker player Howard Lederer; Gerald Kitchen, CEO of SecureTrading Ltd.; Radley Balko, Senior Editor of Reason Magazine; Jon Prideaux, Chief Executive of Asterion Payments; and Pastor Greg Hogan, the father of a college student who claimed that online poker debts forced him to rob a bank in December of 2005.

The House Committee on Financial Services also happens to be chaired by Rep. Barney Frank (D-MS), who recently introduced the Internet Gambling Regulation Enforcement Act aimed at repealing the law currently in place. According to Frank, his bill has received bipartisan backing from among the 70 members of the committee. He has specifically pointed out the support of members Ron Paul (R-TX) and Peter King (R-NY).

Still, the bill will no doubt face an uphill battle, even in the committee phase. While he does have the support of some Republicans, Frank’s bill has only netted 19 of his 69 colleagues as co-sponsors. That means that there’s still a long way to go.

The hearing will also probably influence the fate of the recent bill proposed by Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV). Named H.R. 2140, it provides for the study of Internet gambling by the National Academy of Sciences. This bill is currently awaiting deliberation by the House Ways and Means Committee.

Check back with Dare to Gamble, as we’ll be sure and bring you any new developments in this story which will have a major impact on the future of online gambling in the United States.

Larry Flynt Sex Bounty and Bodog Odds

When it comes to colorful characters, it’s pretty hard to top Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. We’re talking about a man who has survived an assassination attempt (but was paralyzed below the waist in the process), won landmark obscenity-related Supreme Court cases, and even placed 7th out of a field of 135 candidates in the 2003 California election for governor - all the while publishing quality smut for the masses.

Flynt is once again making headlines after he took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post on Sunday, June 3rd. The ad inquired:

“Have you had a sexual encounter with a current member of the United States Congress or a high-ranking government official?

Can you provide documented evidence of illicit sexual or intimate relations with a Congressperson, Senator or other prominent officeholder?

Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine will pay you up to $1 million if we choose to publish your verified story and use your material.”

A toll-free number and e-mail address were provided as contact information.

BODOG GETS IN ON THE ACT

Actually, this isn’t the first time that the self-professed “smut peddler who cares” has made such an offer. During the 1998 impeachment proceedings against President Clinton, he offered a million bucks for evidence about sexual affairs involving Republican lawmakers. His findings were published in a magazine entitled, appropriately enough, The Flynt Report. The investigation eventually led to the resignation of incoming Speaker of the House Bob Livingston, although nobody was able to claim the cash reward.

This time around, Bodog has opted to get in on the action by offering odds on Flynt’s rather unusual proposition. To be considered a winning bet, Larry Flynt must pay $1 million for and publish a scandalous photo of a U.S. government official by December 31st, 2007. The maximum bet is $50. Currently, the odds stand at:

Yes, he will award the $1 million prize. +150

No, he will not award the $1 million prize. -200

Win or lose, you can bet that Larry Flynt will take a great amount of pleasure in watching the more promiscuous politicians squirm. For that matter, so will I.

Briggs vs. Ibragimov - Boxing Results

On Saturday night, Sultan Ibragimov challenged for the WBO Heavyweight title held by Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs. Currently, the other 3 major heavyweight belts belong to members of the former Soviet Union, and the 32-year-old southpaw from Russia was determined to do the same.

Briggs came into the ring weighing 273 pounds, while the challenged was a much slimmer 221. While the champion tried to finish the match early, the challenger stayed away from the power of Briggs and used his jab.

It was obvious from early on that conditioning was going to be a problem for the champ. While Briggs suffers from asthma, his heavily-muscled frame could not have helped the situation (he weighed under 230 pounds when he defeated George Foreman a few years ago).

As the fight continued, Ibragimov picked his spots and landed shot after shot on Briggs. The already-winded champion, meanwhile, mostly followed his foe around the ring looking for one big shot. When Briggs did land, he seemed unable to follow up, allowing the challenger to move away and recover.

Later in the bout, Ibragimov landed more and more punches, but he never got too anxious. Instead of flurrying for a knockout, he simply stepped back, reloaded, and then gave the champion more of the same.

As the fight came to a close, many in the crowd were booing. It was just that kind of fight. The judges scored the fight 117-111, 119-109 and 115-113 - all for Ibragimov.

After the fight, Briggs had the following to say, "I proved that someone with asthma can become heavyweight champion. For two weeks, I couldn't train. I was taking all kinds of antibiotics. I didn't want to fight, but they made me fight, and I had to fight."

Spoken like a true ex-champion.

UNDERCARD RESULTS

On the undercard, Welterweight contender Shamone Cruz (18-0, 11 KO's) kept his unbeaten streak alive with a 12-round unanimous decision over Jose "Chelin" Luis Cruz.

Heavyweight contender Calvin "The Boxing Banker" Brock (31-1, 23 KO's) won an 8-round unanimous decision over Alex Gonzalez. Brock was knocked down in the 3rd but managed to recover.

Middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo (24-0, 16 KO's) got a 3rd round TKO win over Bruce Rumbolz. He knocked him down once in the 1st and then three more times in the 3rd.

German Middleweight contender Robert Stieglitz (30-1, 19 KO's) recorded an eight-round decision over Marlon "Rumblin' Man" Hayes.

Finally, undefeated Russian Welterweight "King" Khabib Alakhverdiev (4-0, 2 KO's) won a fourth round victory by disqualification after opponent Robert Acevedo was repeatedly warned for excessive holding.

K-1 Dynamite USA - Full Results

Saturday night saw Japanese outfit K-1 present their MMA show entitled Dynamite!! USA. While the first few fights were shown on the Showtime network, the rest of the card was only available on pay-per-view. Held at the massive Coliseum in Los Angeles, the weeks leading up to the fight were plagued by failed physicals, line-up changes, and a general air of uncertainty.

Fortunately, the event did happen, and we have all the results for you. Read on!

RESULTS FOR DYNAMITE USA

J.Z. Calvan vs. Nam Phan - After a takedown and a few punches, this one was quickly stopped at the 26 second mark, and the victory was awarded to Calvan.

Isiah Hill vs. Katsuhiko Nagata - In the first round, Hill made Nagata bleed with some well-placed punches before Nagata took him to the ground and controlled the rest of the round.

The second round saw more of the same, as Nagata used his superior wrestling skills to keep things on the ground.

Hill landed some punches in round 3, but Nagata continued to score takedowns.

Nagata won a split decision (29-28, 28-29, and 30-27).

Jonathan Weizorek vs. Tim Persey - Persey got called for a foul after a low blow. He then knocked his opponent down and did some ground and pound. Weizorek returned the favor later in the round by taking Persey down and beating on his head.

In the second round, Wiezorek took him down and Persey gave up his back. Weizorek rained down punches on his opponent and finally forced the ref to stop the fight. Weizorek got the win.

Ido Pariente vs. Jake Shields - Shields quickly took down Pariente, got his back, and made him tap out to a choke at the 2 minute mark. Shields looked very strong.

For some reason, there was over a 50 minute delay before the next fight. In the interim, Dennis Rodman was paraded out like an attention-starved clown. The crowd didn't seem pleased to see him. By the way, the announcers for the event were Bill Goldberg, Jay Glazer and Mauro Ranallo.

Johnnie Morton vs. Bernard Ackah - Morton, the former receiver for the Detroit Lions, came right out and tried for a takedown. He got it, but Ackah quickly got to his feet. A rapid exchange of punches followed, and Morton was hit with a big punch to the jaw. He was knocked out at the 38 second mark and had to be carried out on a stretcher.

To make matters even worse, he refused to submit a urine sample after the fight. At last report, officials were going to hold up his payment of $100,000. Talk about a bad night.

Mighty Mo vs. Warpath Villareal - Almost immediately, Mo hit him with a big punch and cut him under the left eye. Fearing a break in the orbital bone, the referee quickly stopped the match and awarded the win to Mighty Mo.

Melvin Manhoef vs. Yoon Dong Sik - Manhoef nearly put his opponent away in the first minute with punches, but Yoon came back later in the round and took his fading opponent to the mat. There, he hammered him with punches and tried for a series of armbars.

In the second round, Yoon took his opponent down, got his back and locked in an armbar for the submission. Lucky for him, as Yoon's right eye was swollen shut and might have caused the fight to be stopped at any moment.

The crowd was really into this one, and most rated it the fight of the night.

Hideo Tokoro vs. Brad Pickett - Tokoro was a submission machine, trying for one after another. Halfway through the first round, he finally got an armbar and forced Pickett to tap. This was a very nice example of what submission wrestling should look like.

Royce Gracie vs. Kazushi Sakuraba - Boring fight. Gracie spent most of the fight on his back and throwing kicks at the standing Sakuraba. The crowd booed from time to time, which is never good for your co-main event.

After three rounds of mind-numbing inactivity, the scores were 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Royce Gracie. Sakuraba looked especially hesitant and needs to retire before he suffers permanent damage against a striker.

Lots of people were heading to the exits at this point. Another bad sign, since there's still one match to go.

Brock Lesnar vs. Kim Min-soo - Lesnar came out and took him down immediately. He threw a few punches and then easily transitioned into a full mount. Once there, the former WWE champ started beating Min-soo silly, forcing him to tap out at 1:09 of the match due to punches.

While there were some big knockouts, the production of this event was horrible. Somehow, I doubt K-1 will be having an American event for a while (if ever). Lesnar did look impressive, however, and the juggernaut known as the UFC would be wise to sign him to a contract, feed him a few lesser fighter, and then let him challenge for the title. Without a doubt, he's far more marketable that Gabriel Gonzaga.

Second Life Casino Gambling Probed by FBI

The FBI is probing virtual casinos in the Second Life online social networking game, to see if any U.S. laws have been broken.

SECOND LIFE

For those who are unfamiliar with the site, Second Life is a virtual world found on the Internet. It was created by Linden Research Inc., who provide the interactive software which powers the game. In Second Life, "residents" are allowed to communicate and interact with other players, become involved in group activities and even trade virtual goods. This might be through barter, or through use of virtual money called "Linden dollars".

Second Life acts as a social networking website. Members create identities on this virtual world and live lives through these identities. People are able to make friends and socialize online through a safe, anonymous online identity.
LINDEN DOLLARS

But over the months and years, a built-in economic system has grown with the game. While the site is free, players can become premium residents with an out-of-game fee. These players can also buy Linden dollars with real dollars.

The Second Life Story got interesting when virtual casinos popped up in the game. Residents of Second Life can go to these casinos and play using Linden dollars. Since these can be traded for real money, players are essentially playing online poker for the potential to win real money amounts.

That's where the FBI Second Life gambling probes come in.

THE VIRTUAL FBI

When U.S. authorities began cracking down on online gambling in the last year, Second Life noticed an upswing in gambling on their website. Now the FBI is getting interested in this activity. Whether by coincidence or not, Second Life became famous in 2006 and early 2007, around the time that online gambling was made difficult and (borderline) illegal in the United States.

With over 4,000,000 residents in the Second Life worlds, there are hundreds of virtual casinos. So the FBI and Linden Research Inc. want to know whether these virtual casinos are illegal. Linden Inc. asked the FBI to look at the sites and give a determination. If they are deemed illegal, Second Life appears ready to shut down these virtual casinos.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME

The case of Second Life underscores the stupidity of America's anti-gambling laws. The FBI is wasting its time deciding whether make-believe casinos in a make-believe internet world are illegal. That's just idiotic.

This game was created for geeks to waste hours of their time socializing with other geeks. The more real the game, the more of a simulation Second Life is of real life. So, wow, these people introduced money into the system. Now law-abiding citizens who are minding their own business have the government intruding into their private lives.

Chad Johnson Races a Horse - NFL News

Flamboyant Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson has outdone himself. This time, he has challenged a race horse to a foot race.

Actually, the race is for the charity "Feed the Children". All proceeds will go to this Oklahoma City charity, which provides food, clothes, medicine and medical care for children around the globe.

For those who would like to bet on the outcome of this race, here's a link to find the Bodog odds.

Who will win the "Man vs. Beast" race on June 9th between Chad Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals and the race horse "Restore the Roar"?

Chad Johnson -110
Restore the Roar -130

CHAD JOHNSON

Johnson started his college career at little known Santa Monica Junior College, where he formed a potent receiver combination with former Pro Bowl receiver, Steve Smith. Both would transfer to larger colleges. Johnson went to Oregon State, where he teamed with former Bengals teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh as the Beavers' passing threats.

He was drafted in the 2nd round (36th pick overall) by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2001 NFL Draft. Johnson saw little action in his rookie season. In year two, he surpassed 1,100 yards received, while establishing himself as the Bengals go-to guy. His 3rd year in the league saw Johnson set a team record with over 1,300 yards receiving.

During his 3rd through 6th seasons, Chad Johnson has caught 90, 95, 97 and 87 balls. His 6th season, 2006, was considered a slight disappointment, though the rehab of quarterback Carson Palmer and injuries on the offensive line seemed mainly to blame for these troubles. Even at that, Johnson recorded 87 receptions for 1,369 yards and 7 touchdowns, which would be career totals for most any other NFL receiver. Coming into his 7th year in the league, Chad Johnson is in the prime of his career.

OCHO-CINCO

Chad has been one of the more entertaining football stars of the last several years. Though Johnson has talked trash during several game weeks, this seldom has caused much controversy, because Johnson's typically does so in a humorous fashion. His publicity stunts tend to have a comic edge to them, as well.

For example, during October of 2006, Chad Johnson told the media he wanted to be known as Ocho-Cinco for the remainder of "Hispanic Heritage Month". Ocho-Cinco is the Spanish word translation of Chad Johnson's number designation, 85.

In pregame warmups the next week, he appeared on the field in a jersey with the words "Ocho-Cinco" on his jersey in place of "C. Johnson", his normal distinction. Before game time, teammate Carson Palmer ripped off the Ocho-Cinco patch to reveal C. Johnson underneath. Johnson was strangely fined by the NFL for the stunt, though the nickname has stuck.

Johnson would later wear a pair of holographic tiger striped shoes for a Monday Night Football showdown with the Indianapolis Colts, for which he was once again fined. Note that the money for NFL fines go to that player's favorite charity.

WHO COVERED 85 IN '05

In 2005, Chad Johnson announced he was keeping a list of defensive backs who had covered him skillfully. This list was called "Who Covered 85 in '05". This was meant as a motivating ploy in an upcoming big game versus the division rival Baltimore Ravens.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis announced he wanted Johnson to replace the original list with a parody list, "Did 85 do everything he could to lead his team to victory 11-6-05". When Johnson had a star game against the Ravens that week. Lewis was happy to allow Johnson to keep his original list.

THE RACE

The race will take place at River Downs Track in Cincinnati. Chad Johnson will start at the 16th pole, while Restore the Roar will start at the 8th pole. Chad Johnson will run 110 yards. Restore the Roar will give Johnson a handicap, running twice that distance at 220 yards.

Patti Cooksey will come out of retirement to ride Restore the Roar, which is a four-year old thoroughbred. If Restore the Roar was a quarterhorse, it would no doubt be the favorite in this race. Since it's a thoroughbred, which starts slower than a quarterhorse, this could go down to the wire.

2007 World Series of Poker - Day 1 Recap

The 2007 World Series of Poker officially kicked off on June 1st, and there were plenty of fireworks right from the beginning. For the first time in WSOP history, two events were being played simultaneously on opening day - the $5000 World Championship Mixed Games event and the $500 Casino Employees event.

Long registration lines seemed to irritate many players, and things didn’t improve once the players got to their tables. The new ‘Poker Peek’ cards provided by the U.S. Playing Card Company were not at all popular with players. Early on, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow exclaimed, “Did you see these cards? You can’t see the cards!”

Multi-time WSOP champion Doyle Brunson took one look at the cards and issued the following comment: “What the hell are these?”

Enough of a stink was made that the cards were eventually replaced by normal KEM cards three hours into the event. Some players were even upset to the point that they requested their buy-ins back. With the precedent set, future events may also see the ‘Poker Peek’ cards replaced by the more standard KEM brand.

After all the controversy died down, 452 players settled in for the $5000 Mixed Game event which split between limit and no-limit Hold’em. Participants included Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Chris Moneymaker, Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer, Andy Black, T.J. Cloutier and Phil Ivey. Gun Hansen and Phil Hellmuth also played, although both men showed up after the event had started.

As the day went on, onlookers got to see Chris Ferguson, David Ulliott, Freddy Deeb, Nam Le and Phil Ivey all get eliminated from the event. Strong performances were turned in from Eric Froehlich, Todd Brunson, Josh Arieh, Vanessa Rousso and Isabelle Mercier. At the end of the day (with less than 100 players remaining), the Top 10 chip leaders were:

Greg 'FBT' Mueller — 130,000

Frank Kassela — 121,500

Sabyl Cohen — 118,500

Louis Werman — 110,500

Mark Teltscher — 100,500

John Kroshvs — 93,000

John Younger — 91,500

Kirk Morrison — 90,500

Alex Bolotin — 88,000

Update on World Poker Tour Lawsuit

During last year’s World Series of Poker, seven professional players (Greg Raymer, Chris Ferguson, Joseph Hachem, Howard Lederer, Annie Duke, Andy Bloch and Phil Gordon) filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the World Poker Tour. The players claimed that the releases they had to sign before playing in a WPT event infringed on their personal property rights and kept them from pursuing their profession as a poker pro.

In April, the players filed a motion for a summary judgment, which would have basically ended the case in the players’ favor. After waiting for a reply from the WPT, blood-sucking lawyers from both sides met to argue about it some more on May 14th. After reviewing this latest bout of legal wrangling, District Court Judge Otis D. Wright II denied the summary judgment on May 22nd. He indicated that the case will be heading to court unless a settlement is reached between the two sides.

According to Adam Pliska, general counsel and head vampire for the WPT, “We are very pleased with Judge Wright’s order denying the Motion for Summary Judgment. We feel that this decision confirms our contention that this case is without merit.” Wow. Can’t you just feel the sincerity oozing from his voice?

While many fans of poker have hoped for a settlement, it doesn’t seem that this one is going to be over anytime soon. Meanwhile, many of the players involved in the lawsuit refuse to play in the WPT events, thus denying fans the chance to see the best in the world play each other.

It’s a good thing that all those involved in the suit are millionaires, as I’m certain that the attorney fees are piling up. The WPT, on the other hand, risks alienating some of the top players in the game. I wonder if they can really afford to do so? And after hearing that Shana Hiatt had to sue them just to be able to host NBC’s Poker After Dark, I have to wonder if the WPT isn’t being run by a bunch of assholes.

Gambling News - The Best of Dare to Gamble - June 1

We start this week's Best of Dare to Gamble with a question.

Question: What do Google, Las Vegas and Mark Cuban have in common?

Answer: All three are involved in a new professional football league: the United Football League. This project hopes to get off the ground in 2008.

This was but one of the news stories featured on DaretoGamble this week. We seemed to have lots of lawmaking and jurisprudence going on this week. Generally, that means bad news. I guess that held to form this week.

GAMBLING LEGAL NEWS

We reported more fallout from the UIGEA fiasco. It looks like four more microgaming casinos will stop taking U.S. bets. There's still over a hundred Microgaming casinos out there, but it's never good news to hear that someone else is getting out of the American side of the business.

Speaking of the UIGEA, support is growing to repeal the new U.S. gambling law. Several uK-based money processing giants have formed the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative. The UC Group and Baker Tilly are supporting the Barney Frank IGREA act.

UC and friends hope to make it legal for legitimate foreign online casinos to take U.S. players, thus driving the bad operators out of the U.S. industry.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the WTO ruling on online gambling continues.

Antigua and Barbuda are asking the other 170 members of the World Trade Organization to join in seeking damages against the United States for its ban on offshore online casinos. Antigua has won two court cases against the U.S. and now it is time for the damages phase. Also, enjoy another picture of George W. Bush looking confused.

Juxtaposed with the Bush administration's hatchet job on America's gambling entrepreneurs, we featured a story on the expansion of Texas Holdem in French casinos. C'mon, even the French have their heads on straight with this gambling issue.

UFC 71: LIDDELL VS. JACKSON RESULTS

We analyzed the result of UFC 71, which saw Quinton "Rampage" Jackson take down Chuck Liddell in their rematch, this time claiming the UFC Light Heavyweight title.

THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER

Bodog is offering bets on the outcome of the World Series of Poker. Here are two posts which cover the myriad of propositions bets have to do with this year's World Series of Poker. Appropriately enough, these are labeled World Series of Poker Odds and More World Series of Poker Odds.

If you like proposition betting, we cover the entire spectrum. Dare To Gamble has everything from reality t.v. bets like America's Got Talent or the sports bets like the Michael Vick legal case.

Poker After Dark Hosted by Shana Hiatt

Viewers can watch big name poker every night on NBC these days. NBC started showing Poker After Dark back in the winter. It now airs six nights a week at 2am Eastern Time.

This show is really entertaining. NBC made a point to collect the biggest "characters" in the sport. The cast includes Sam Farha, Tony G, Mike Matusow, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey and Andy Bloch.

I thought I would give a recap of the show the other night, simply to give readers an idea of what they might expect. Note that there is an edited version of Poker After Dark which airs every Saturday. This show is five shows edited into one.

THE PRODUCTION

The show is hosted by Shana Hiatt, who previously hosted the first three seasons of The World Poker Tour. According to Cardplayer poker_news, Shana had to sue The World Poker Tour to take this gig with NBC. Her job consists of interviewing players when they bust out, and once or twice a show talking to some player on an aside.

There is a narrator out of the commercials, as well as the play-by-play on cards and bet sizes and very occasional commentary. Otherwise, the dialogue is carried by the players.

I prefer this style to the highly edited narration of the World Series of Poker. The color commentary works on the WSOP, because they are covering mostly a bunch of no-name players without a whole lot of personality. But the "Poker After Dark" guys don't need someone talking over them.

PREVIOUSLY ON POKER AFTER DARK

Sam Farha busted out when he went sensed weakness against Phil Ivey and went all-in. He was caught and lost his sizable stack. Phil Ivey has over half the chips in the game. Phil Hellmuth is the short stack.

Hellmuth A-K versus Bloch at A-10. Phil is still the short stack.

Meanwhile, Hellmuth and Matusow had a bet that Hellmuth won't come back to win the table. It's a stacked bet, Hellmuth stands to lose $3,000, while Matusow is in for over $40,000.

TONY G

Interestingly, I expected Tony G to be one of the major talkers at the table. Matusow and Farha dominated the talk, with Hellmuth chiming in occasionally. Tony apparently isn't getting any cards, because (as Matusow mentioned and Tony agreed) Tony G hasn't played a hand all day.

Hellmuth and the Mouth are starting to get chippy, though it is taking the form of recollections of former mouth-offs the two have had.

IVEY DOMINATES PLAY

PHil Ivey just pushed Phil Hellmuth out of a hand which Hellmuth was ahead of. Hellmuth mentions this is how he plays Ivey, to let him steal a few hands and then trap him.

Mike Matusow and Tony G explode with indignation when Hellmuth showed them his cards, because they were both (rightly) convinced that Hellmuth was dominating the hand. Both had jacks, but Hellmuth had an Ace against a 9. When a King came on the flop, Hellmuth thought Ivey had a pair of Kings.

Hellmuth tells the guys they need to listen to his lessons, though they don't have the intelligence to do so. He mentions that Ivey is probably listening. Ivey pipes in "You have to listen" as if Hellmuth is wise. He might be joking.

WHAT'S JUST HAPPENED?

Tony G doesn't seem to be paying attention. After the flop, Bloch pushed Ivey out of the hand with a $4,000 bet. Tony G looked up from his coffee cup and said, "You didn't flop it?" He appears to have not noticed the flop.

Tony G is screwing with Hellmuth because he reportedly wanted a private jet to bring him to the set. Phil replies that "some people have a family life". Matusow explains to Tony G that Phil is an icon, then in the next breath says that Phil is a nutcase and asks if Phil still has the same therapist.

Four players got in one hand. When Phil Hellmuth flopped top pair, he bet all-in with $6,500. When everyone folded, then Hellmuth complained that he didn't play the hand right, that he should have bet $2,000 instead.

HELLMUTH IS FINISHED

Eventually, Phil Hellmuth is busted out. Hellmuth tells Ivey he will play him sometime for real stakes. Ivey replies that Hellmuth should come down to the Bellagio sometime, as if Hellmuth is ducking the big games.

Shana: "So who is playing the worst at the table?"
Phil (paraphrased): Everyone is playing well, though Tony G is playing tight. It's a good strategy with low blinds.
Shana: "Rate your own play?"
Phil (paraphrased): Not that bad. I played two hands badly.
Shana: "Can you afford to play two hands badly at this table?"
Phil (paraphrased): Maybe, I don't know. (changing the subject somewhat), I was trying to trap Ivey and it never worked.

AFTERMATH

The table goes quiet after Hellmuth leaves, as Tony G and Mike Matusow have no one to pick on anymore. The two of them really do seem like a pair of teenage school kids. They appear to have made buddies at the table. Several times, the two seem more interested in whispering among themselves than paying attention to the rest of the table.

Matusow is explaining to Tony G how he didn't play well early in the tournament. Tony G consoles Mike for his poor play.

Both are going to need consoling, if they continue to lay down hands. Phil Ivey is starting to use the power of the big stack, pushing both of them out of hands over and over.

A COUPLE OF SHOWDOWNS

Finally, Mike and Tony get in the same hand. Mike flops a pair of 10's, but Tony pair a Jack on the turn. He bets Mike out of the hand.

Bloch is able to push Phil Ivey out of a hand with a $5,000 bet. Shana Hiatt comes in to tell us it turned into the Phil Ivey Show. Meanwhile, Tony G makes snarky comments as she's signing out.

Tomorrow: Matusow winks at Phil Ivey and Phil rolls his eyes.

Fantasy Football News - Vick, LJ, D-Jax and More!

The great thing about fantasy football is that there’s always some kind of news coming out that could affect your upcoming season. From players getting injured to dumb athletes getting arrested (or engaging in illegal dogfights), our goal is to keep you updated on all the various happenings in the world of the NFL. So without further delay, let’s dive right in.

FANTASY FOOTBALL NEWS

Willie Parker to Split Carries?

Steelers running back Willie Parker has been quoted as saying, “I think the two-back system will work very well here in Pittsburgh.”

Uh oh. This sounds like it could be trouble, as yet another team looks to water down the fantasy football talent pool with a committee approach. It might not happen, but runner Najeh Davenport is said to be looking “explosive,” and the team also signed free-agent Kevin Barlow. “Fast” Willie has talent, but there have always been questions about his durability. Throwing the 247 pound Davenport into the mix would certainly save some wear and tear on his body.

If Davenport can stay healthy - which he’s had a problem doing in the past - he might be a valuable fantasy asset, especially in a touchdown-only league. Remember how Marion Barber III gobbled up all those red zone touchdowns last year for the Cowboys?

McCareins to Tennessee?

With a $2.9 million cap number hanging over his head, it appears that the New York Jets might release wide receiver Justin McCareins. If that happens, one of the teams reportedly interested in his services are the Tennessee Titans, a team desperate to give QB Vince Young some adequate targets.

This could be a nice fit. McCareins had his best year with the Titans in 2003 when he caught 47 balls for 813 yards and 7 touchdowns. Since moving to the Jets, he’s failed to live up to his potential, and a change of scenery (and a reunion with HC Jeff Fisher) could be just what he needs.

The Saga of Michael Vick Continues

The AP is now reporting that several informants have come forward to link Michael Vick with illegal dog fighting, but Vick has yet to be charged with anything. While I understand the need for diligence in the matter, Vick is innocent until proven guilty, and these delays are simply dragging his name through the mud and costing him money (AirTran Airways just decided not to renew their contract with him).

But regardless of what happens, I can’t see a scenario where Vick doesn’t get suspended by the league. Adjust your draft board accordingly.

Throw Him the Damn Ball!

According to Chiefs HC Herman Edwards, RB Larry Johnson will become more a receiving threat out of the backfield this year. “If he catches 60 passes…to me it’s like an extended run. It’s almost like a toss play,” Edwards said.

Of course, Johnson caught 41 passes last year, so it may not be a huge increase if he’s in the 60-catch range. Still, these can often lead to big gains, and every point is critical in fantasy football. The biggest question is, can a RB who racked up a record 416 carries last year keep from wearing down and getting injured during the following season? The track record for other guys in the same situation has not been good.

Ward Moves to the Slot

Steelers WR Hines Ward has been lining up as the slot receiver in some formations during the team’s organized activities. While it’s not a permanent shift, Ward believes that it might allow his to get more favorable matchups in certain situations. Believe me, I’m all for any situation that allows Ward to get back to the days when he torched defenses for 1329 yards and 12 TDs (2002) and 1163 and 10 TDs (2003).

Chad Johnson to Race a Horse

This won’t have an impact on your fantasy season, but it is just plain odd. Bengals WR Chad Johnson will be racing against a horse for charity on June 9th. Johnson will have to run 110 yards while the horse, Restore The Roar, will have to go 220 yards. No word yet on whether or not the horse has a crazy dance planned for the finish line.

Jackson Suffering from Turf Toe

The 49ers grabbed WR Darrell Jackson from the Seahawks for a 4th-round draft pick, but the star wideout is currently suffering from a lingering turf toe. While HC Mike Nolan has stated that the team expects him to be ready for training camp, turf toe is notorious for its lingering effects. Add Jackson’s knee problems to the mix, and you have to wonder if this trade was really so good after all. Still, if he’s only healthy for half the season, D-Jax is better than any other WR on the Niners roster.

Jamal Lewis Recovers from Bone Spurs

Browns RB Jamal Lewis had some bone spurs removed from his right ankle four months ago, and he now says that he’s nearly 100%. According to Lewis, “I’m making cuts I haven’t really made in the last two years.”

He’s now had two surgeries on his right ankle in the last two years. While the Browns would love to pound him against opponents, how long is that ankle going to hold up? This could translate into some extra work for 2nd-year RB Jerome Harrison.

Shiancoe to Break Out?

According to analyst Solomon Wilcox, Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe “will catch at least 50 balls this year.” TE Jermaine Wiggins is gone, so the job certainly belongs to Shiancoe (which would account for the $7.5 million the Vikings paid him up front). After several years of backing up TE Jeremy Shockey in New York, this could be the year that “V” finally gets to show what he’s made of.

Well, that’s all for today. Check back with us often as we endeavor to cover all the latest happenings in the world of gambling. If you can bet on it, chances are that you’ll be able to read about it at Dare to Gamble.

Babe of the Day - Rosario Dawson

You've seen her in films such as Clerks 2, Grindhouse and Men in Black II. This lovely lady has a very bright future. She also has perhaps the best rack in Hollywood. Don't believe me? Check out her nude scene in Alexander. I dare you to watch that one without your jaw hitting the floor!

NFL Odds from Bodog - Overall Team Records

There’s still a ways to go before the 2007 NFL season officially kicks off, but that hasn’t stopped Bodog from releasing their latest batch of wagers. This time around, they’re taking bets on the total number of wins for each team in the upcoming season. The maximum wager for each team is $600, and they must play 16 regular season games for the bet to be valid.

Personally, the 49ers at over 7 ½ (-135) and the Raiders at under 5 (+105) are looking like really good bets to me. The Niners have made massive improvements to their team in the offseason, and they were really coming together down the stretch in the 2006 season. The Raiders, on the other hand, continue to look absolutely clueless. They have a rookie quarterback and a young coach with no NFL experience. That doesn’t add up to anything good.
