Fantasy Football - Top 10 News Items

It’s a great time to be a fantasy football fan, as training camps are now underway. While it’s time to gauge the rookie class and watch out for key positional battles, it’s also the time where we watch a couple of name players go down with injuries (which has already happened - see below).

Since you may already be drafting for a league, or at the very least participating in a mock draft, I’ve compiled the 10 biggest recent bits of fantasy football news to help you make a more informed decision. Enjoy.

TOP 10 FANTASY FOOTBALL NEWS

1. Vikings RB Chester Taylor left practice today with an apparent right arm injury. It may be nothing, but those thinking of drafting rookie RB Adrian Peterson might watch this one closely.

2. For those of you who draft who individual defensive players, keep an eye on the Greg Ellis (Cowboys LB) situation. He wants a new contract and claims that retirement is an option if he doesn’t get it. That’s pretty dumb logic, if you ask me.

3. Giants DL Michael Strahan is considering retirement. According to a teammate, “It’s still 50-50 whether he is going to come back.” After a nasty divorce, many believe this is just a ploy by the gap-toothed Strahan to get more money. The team, however, is moving on and may sign Simeon Rice to replace him.

4. The Oakland Raiders worked out free agent QB Daunte Culpepper today, and the latest reports indicate that they will sign him. While JaMarcus Russell holds out, Culpepper would compete with Josh McCown and Andrew Walter.

5. Patriots RB Laurence Maroney continues to practice with a red no-contact jersey. Keep an eye on this one, as Maroney is still recovering from a shoulder injury.

6. Niners RB Frank Gore broke his hand yesterday during practice. The bone will take a month to heal, and Gore is expected to miss a week of practice and possibly a few preseason games.

7. In case you missed it, Warrick Dunn underwent back surgery last week and will not be ready for the start of the season. Since Jerious Norwood was going to get more carries this year anyway, this could spell the end of Dunn’s starting role with the Falcons.

8. The Steelers new offensive coordinator doesn’t like to rotate runners, so there is speculation that Willie Parker will be used as an every down back. That’s great news for fantasy owners.

9. Patriots CB Chad Scott has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury. His season is officially over.

10. Packers RB Vernand Morency will miss a couple of weeks after suffering a knee injury. This is a great opportunity for rookie RB Brandon Jackson, but word out of Packers camp is that Jackson has failed to establish himself.

Arena Bowl XXI Results

On Sunday, New Orleans hosted Arena Bowl XXI, with the San Jose SaberCats taking on the Columbus Destroyers. It was the first championship game of any sort to be held in The Big Easy since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, and it was sold out weeks in advance (17,056 tickets purchased).

CLASH OF THE TITANS

Both teams entered the game with loads of momentum. The SaberCats were the number one seed coming into the playoffs, and the Destroyers had staged several upsets to get to the championship game. San Jose had averaged 63.2 points a game, while Columbus averaged 50.1 during the regular season and cranked it up to 63 points in the post-season.

According to sportsbooks like Bodog, the SaberCats were the favorites heading into the game against the 10-9 Destroyers. A win for Columbus would no doubt rank as one of the greatest Arena Bowl upsets of all time.

ARENA BOWL XXI

In the end, the SaberCats proved too much for their competition, defeating the Destroyers by a score of 55 to 33. In the process, the SaberCats captured their third Arena League title in six years.

While the Destroyers defense held San Jose to their lowest total of the playoffs, the SaberCats D responded by holding Columbus to 30 points less than their post-season average.

SaberCats QB Mark Grieb was named the game’s MVP, as he passed for 218 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Tour de France Results

The 2007 Tour de France wrapped up this weekend, and Spain’s Alberto Contador (riding for America’s Discovery Channel Team) won the right to wear the bright yellow jersey of the event’s champion. He seemed destined to finish in 2nd place behind leader Michael Rasmussen until his team, Rabobank, accused him of evading doping controls and pulled him from the tournament.

The win was the second closest in the Tour’s 104-year history, as Contador won by just 23 seconds over Australia’s Cadel Evans. Still, there was plenty of praise for Contador, and cycling legend Lance Armstrong called him, “the future of Spanish cycling and perhaps international cycling.”

A BRUSH WITH DEATH

Contador called the win a “dream come true.” This was especially true considering that he nearly suffered permanent brain damage after suffering an aneurism during a race in 2004. He was rushed to the hospital and surgery was performed within hours. While there, he drew inspiration from reading a book about Armstrong. He still has a large scar down the side of his head to remind him of the near-fatal event.

TOP 10 FINISHERS

Here are the Top 10 finishers, along with the odds which Bodog had placed on each of them.

1. Alberto Contador (25/1)

Cadel Evans (12/1)

Levi Leipheimer (10/1)

Carlos Sastre (10/1)

Haimar Subedit (50/1)

Alejandro Valverde (5/2)

Kim Kirchen (No individual odds given)

Who Will Beat Up Andy Dick Next? - Bodog Has Odds

On July 11th, an epic slugfest occurred, but the participants weren’t pro boxers or MMA experts. Nope, it was comedian Andy Dick versus Jon Lovitz. Take a moment and let that image sink in.

Apparently, Lovitz has long blamed Dick for the death of Phil Hartman and his wife, Brynn. After being sober for 10 years, Brynn reportedly got hooked on cocaine again after being given some at a party by Dick. 5 months later, Brynn Hartman killed her husband and then took her own life.

This feud between Dick and Lovitz simmered for years, and the two had an encounter recently where an intoxicated Dick supposedly told Lovitz that he had put the “Phil Hartman hex” on him. The two met up again a few weeks ago at the Laugh Factory, and Lovitz was expecting an apology from Dick for the earlier remarks.

He didn’t receive an apology. Instead, Dick offered him a part in his next movie. Lovitz didn’t see the humor in this and proceeded to open up a can of whoop ass. According to one witness, “Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started gushing out of his nose.”

To his credit, Lovitz didn’t deny his role in the attack. In fact, he told Page Six, “All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is an asshole.”

BODOG ODDS ON WHO’S NEXT

This begs the question, who will be the next celebrity to fight Andy Dick? Bodog is even taking odds on the subject, but an altercation must occur by the end of the year for any bets to have action. The maximum wager is $50. Now let’s take a look at the contenders.

Dennis Miller 6/1

Courtney Love 7/1

Kathy Griffin 11/2

Lisa Lampanelli 7/1

Betty White 9/1

Harvey Levin 5/1

Perez Hilton 4/1

Joe Rogan 9/1

Mickey Rourke 10/1

Danny Bonaduce 12/1

Denmark Rules Poker a Game of Skill

A court in Denmark has ruled that poker tournaments are indeed a game a skill and do not qualify as chance-based gambling. This no doubt comes as a relief to Frederik Hostrup, chairman of the Danish Poker Association and brother of Asian Poker Classic champ Carl Hostrup. You see, Frederik was charged with illegal gambling in late 2006 for arranging poker tournaments which required an entry fee.

Hostrup was cleared of the charges and attorneys for Horesta, a national restaurant, tourist and hotel organization, have 2 weeks to file for an appeal. An appeal in the case is likely, but the decision, if it holds up, might mark an important precedent in the European community. It could then be used by other pro-poker elements in Europe to prevent the game from being considered a form of illegal gambling.

Hostrup was doubly lucky, as he was also recently cleared of accusations of online poker cheating (when chat room remark on Party Poker was taken the wrong way).

I guess there’s more drama in Denmark than I would have expected. But, hey, at least the whole thing didn’t end like Hamlet.

The Return of PONG!

Pong was the first video game to achieve widespread popularity both in video arcades and on the home console versions. Now it’s time for a comeback.

Bally Technologies is trying to get approval for Pong slot machine. The idea is that a player’s skill at the game would help determine the overall payout.

PASSING INSPECTION

But wouldn’t this tend to cancel out the random nature of slots? This question has already been debated by the state Gaming Control Board, which ruled that slots must have an element of randomness in their basic game. Since the Pong game is only relevant during the bonus round, it is considered acceptable, and the panel gave a thumbs up to the game and shuffled it over to the Nevada Gaming Commission where it will await final approval.

If the game is approved, it could start a wave of skill-based games which capitalize on old video games. Really, if they make a Pong game, can Asteroids and Frogger be far behind?

HOW THE GAME WORKS

It plays very much like a 5-reel video slot, but Pong logos are also featured on the reels. Line up three in a row and you’ll find that the bonus round has been activated. At this stage, the player engages in a 45-second game of Pong with the machine. The better the player does, the more money he or she will win.

The Gaming Control Board required that a minimum amount had to be paid out if a player reached the bonus round. It has since been learned that the difference between doing well in the bonus round and stinking up the joint amount to only a 7 percent difference in the amount of payout.

This Thursday, the Nevada Gaming Commission is expected to meet and make a decision on the Pong machine. If approved, Bally could then engage in lab and field testing for the product. After that, it’s all gravy.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright - Fight Results

On Saturday night, light heavyweight champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins took on Ronald “Winky” Wright in a 170-pound fight. A solid bout with excellent work by both men, Hopkins came into the fight as a +105 underdog according to Bodog. Wright, meanwhile, was listed as a -135 favorite.

So who won? Well, read on for the answer.

THE EARLY ROUNDS

Hopkins took the first round, masterfully firing right hands and then moving in and smothering his opponent before muscling him around the ring. The second round was more of the same, although Wright did manage to get in a couple of short right hands to the face of The Executioner.

In the third round, a clash of heads left Wright with a cut on his left eyelid. Blood immediately started to flow down his face. The doctor examined the cut (while Hopkins stood in a neutral corner and smiled) and then allowed the fight to continue.

The fight was close in the fourth, but Hopkins used his head at one point to rub the cut on Wright’s face. Dirty move or veteran tactic? You be the judge.

THE MIDDLE ROUNDS

Wright got in some licks in the fifth, but Hopkins seemed unfazed. The Executioner continued to use his head as an extra weapon, but the referee didn’t issue any warnings. In the seventh, however, the ref did caution Hopkins about excessive holding. Also in the seventh, the two men opened things up a bit and engaged in a toe-to-toe slugfest. Both men landed on the other, and Wright even got in a retaliatory head butt to let Hopkins know how it felt.

The wrestling and headbutts continued into the eighth round, with Hopkins getting the better of the exchanges.

THE LATE ROUNDS

Hopkins was warned again in the ninth for excessive holding, but the ref did not deduct a point. In the 10th, Wright’s legs seemed to be weakening as blood continued to pour from his eye and Hopkins landed chopping blows.

In the final two rounds, Wright looked as though he had run out of steam, and Hopkins continued to pepper way with looping punches and occasional headbutts.

THE DECISION

Judge Glenn Trowbridge scored it 117-111.

Judge Glen Hamada scored it 116-112

Judge Dave Moretti scored it 117-111.

All for the winner by unanimous decision…..Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins.

POST-FIGHT QUOTES

"We tend to cross feet and lean in and that's what happens. I [was] going under and he came into to me and I was coming down and I wasn't even looking at him. So he really came to me after he threw a punch. It was an accidental headbutt. It happens with southpaws and orthodox fighters." -- Bernard Hopkins

"I feel like I won the fight. I brought the fight to him. He fought a great fight and he had better legs than I thought. He threw better punches than I thought, but the cut really bothered me from the beginning. But it was a fight, and I ain't taking anything away from him, and he fought better than a 42-year-old fighter." -- Winky Wright

Sports Betting Terms 101

Maybe you’re a seasoned sports bettor, or maybe you’re just starting to get your feet wet. Either way, it pays to know the proper terminology when logging onto sportsbooks like Bodog. While the following list is by no means comprehensive, it should give you an idea of the meanings of some of the most commonly used phrases in the industry.

SPORTS BETTING TERMS

Parlay - A single bet that links together two or more individual wagers. All wagers must cover the spread for a bettor to win money, and the payoff is much higher (but so is the risk).

Bonus Whore - Someone who opens up an offshore betting account in order to take advantage of bonuses being offered to new customers. However, the bonus whore has no intention of providing long-term business.

Vig or Vigorish - The commission received by the bookmaker on a bet. Also known as “Juice.” For example, most bets require you to wager $110 to win $100. That extra $10 goes to the bookmaker.

Point Spread - Used to even the odds of a sporting event, points are either added or subtracted from the final score of a particular team. The resulting score determines the winner for betting purposes.

Push - A tie against the spread. On straight bets, the result is usually “no action,” and all the bettors money is returned.

Air Move - When a sportsbook changes their betting line in response to a change by another sportsbook.

Beard - A person who places bets for another person, usually because the sportsbook will not take action from that individual.

Post-Up Betting - Placing bets from an already funded account. Wins or losses are simply added to or subtracted from the bettor’s account. This is a regular practice with online sportsbooks.

Circled - A game on which the bookmaker has placed a lower maximum betting limit. For example, a sports book might normally allow a $1000 max limit on NFL games, but a particular game is “circled” and limited to only a $500 max bet.

Off or Off the Board - If an event is Off the Board, then the sportsbook is no longer taking bets on it.

UFC to Pass Boxing in Sports Betting Revenue

While mixed martial arts is very popular these days, I’m still surprised from time to time by just how much of a success it actually is. For example, according to the folks at leading sportsbook Bodog, it seems as though the UFC is now on the verge of surpassing boxing in terms of online betting revenue.

UFC 71, which featured the main event of Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, drew a record audience and caused a huge spike in the amount of online betting for the sport. Since then, public interest, and that of sports bettors, has remained high.

According to the sportsbook manager for Bodog, “2007 will mark the first year that MMA handle will surpass boxing.” For those of you not familiar with betting jargon, the “handle” is the total amount of money taken for an event from wagering.

And the bigger the match, the more money that’s wagered. Jackson vs. Liddell accounted for two-thirds of the handle for UFC 71, while Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz (a non-title fight) was responsible for a third of the UFC 73 handle.

With each passing event, MMA and sportsbook sites continue to see an increase in traffic. And while a highly anticipated boxing match like De La Hoya vs. Mayweather may still bring in monster revenue, boxing in general is getting left behind, in large part due to the utter blandness of the current heavyweight crop of fighters.

But in the end, boxing only has themselves to blame for the shift in power. For years they have been riddled with corruption and controversy, much of which can be blamed on the cartoonish-yet-devious Don King.

While veterans like Gatti, Hopkins and De La Hoya slug it out in overpriced pay-per-views that do little for the next generation of fighters, the UFC are masters of making someone into a star within a matter of months. This, and the fact that most UFC cards feature nine fights to a boxing pay-per-view’s two or three, have the sweet science on the ropes.

And when they finally hit the deck, one has to wonder if they’ll ever get back up?

Fantasy Football News

For those of you in a fantasy football league, your draft is probably still several weeks away. Still, it’s never too early to start combing the news articles for those little tidbits of information that can put your team over the top. That being said, let’s look at some of the latest happenings in the world of the NFL.

FANTASY FOOTBALL NEWS

Vick Situation Worsens

Now that he’s been indicted on dog fighting charges, sources are saying that the NFL may ask Falcons QB Michael Vick to take a leave of absence and concentrate on his coming legal battle. Bottom line, stay away from Vick in your coming fantasy draft, as it looks more and more likely that he’ll miss some (if not all) of the 2007 season.

Just a thought. Didn’t Ray Lewis go through a murder trial during an NFL season? While I don’t condone dog fighting, I would hardly call it as serious a charge as taking another man’s life. Then again, the media has latched onto this one and doesn’t seem ready to let go for the foreseeable future.

Chambers to Plead Not Guilty

Dolphins WR Chris Chambers plans to plead not guilty to charges stemming from a recent arrest for driving under the influence. While I don’t remember Chambers ever being in trouble, this might bring down a suspension from the league, especially since the Vick situation has the NFL under a lot of scrutiny at the moment.

Pats May Cut Wide Receivers

According to reports, Patriots receivers Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney and Kelly Washington may not be on the team’s roster when training camp is over. After the team brought in guys like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, their days could be numbered.

Spears Loses Weight

Cowboys DL Marcus Spears has shed 20 pounds in the offseason. He is currently down to 290 pounds. If your league drafts individual defensive players, you might keep that in mind.

Culpepper Looking for a Home

After finally getting his release from the Dolphins, free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper met yesterday with Bucs coach John Gruden. While it’s uncertain where he might land, that Atlanta job may become wide open in the near future. If the money’s right, we could very well see Daunte sporting black and red in a month or two. Then again, Culpepper would only have to beat out Jeff Garica and Chris Simms to take the reins with the Bucs.

NBA Ref Fixes Games - FBI Investigates

Uh, oh. Looks like NBA commissioner David Stern is about to have someone else who he can fine. Actually, the guy I’m talking about would be lucky to just get off with a fine. It‘s more likely that he‘ll be spending some serious time behind bars.

I’m talking about the NBA referee who is reported to be under investigation by the FBI for allegedly fixing games over the past two season. According to reports, the ref got in debt (due to a gambling problem) to members of the New York organized crime community. He then began to make calls during NBA games to influence the outcome of contests which he (and his mob buddies) were betting on. The number of affected games has been reported to be in the double digits.

Why do I get this feeling that Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban will claim half the affected games went against his team?

The yearlong investigation is said to be wrapping up, and arrests are expected to be made soon. According to an unidentified law enforcement official, the referee in question has made plans to turn himself in as early as next week.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright - Preview and Bodog Odds

The Mandalay Bay Events Center will be the site for the Saturday, July 21st showdown between Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins and Ronald “Winky” Wright. The fight will be shown live on HBO Pay-Per-View. Since no titles are on the line, the two fighters have agreed to meet at 170 pounds.

PREVIEW OF THE FIGHTERS

BERNARD HOPKINS

Bernard Hopkins has a record of 47 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw, with 32 knockouts. He’s a Philly fighter and stands 6’1”. The 42-year-old fighter is trained by Naazim Richardson. Hopkins is a well-rounded boxer-puncher who trains hard and always shows up ready to go to war.

His most recent fight was an upset over Antonio Tarver, and he also holds wins over Antwun Echols, Oscar De La Hoya, Glen Johnson, Felix Trinidad and William Joppy. His most recent losses have come against Jermain Taylor (twice). Before that, you’ll have to go back to 1993 when he lost to Roy Jones Jr. He also lost his debut match against Clinton Mitchell. As Middleweight champ, Hopkins racked up a record-setting string of 20 straight title defenses.

Strengths

Hopkins can box with opponents are engage in a brutal slugfest, and he’s equally adept at both. He put De La Hoya away with a wicked left hook to the liver, and his right hand is just as dangerous. He understands how to use his height to move opponents around the ring in the clinch, and he is adept at creating angles. He is also tough as nails, and you’ll never see Hopkins give up during a fight.

Weaknesses

He’s 42 years old. That’s really about it, and it still remains to be seen just how much Father Time has caught up with him.

WINKY WRIGHT

Wright holds a record of 51 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, with 25 wins coming by way of knockout. A southpaw fighter and master of defense, Wright stands at 5’10” and weighs 167 pounds. He is 35-years-old and trained by Dan Birmingham.

Wright has victories over Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad and Shane Mosley (twice). His losses have come against Fernando Vargas, Harry Simon and Julio Cesar Vasquez. His lone draw came last year against Jermain Taylor.

Strengths

Wright has good speed and foot movement and is very adept at moving around the ring and slipping punches. He’s very good with the jab, and loves to follow up with hammering left crosses. The 170 pound fighting weight will help Wright, as this is closer to his normal weight, and he has had difficulty in the past cutting down to 154 pounds.

Weaknesses

Wright’s power isn’t the best in the world, and he only has one TKO in his last 10 fights. While a very slick defensive fighter, he has seem to suffer from mental lapses over the last few years, perhaps in an effort to please the crowd and turn fights into wild brawls.

BODOG ODDS

According to Bodog, here are the current betting lines for the fight. The maximum bet for both of these is $500.

Who will win the fight?

Bernard Hopkins +105

Winky Wright -135

Total rounds in the fight?

Over 11 ½ -600

Under 11 ½ +400

NETeller Avoids Prosecution - Forfeits $136 Million

It looks as though NETeller may be able to avoid prosecution in the United States. In order to do so, they have agreed to forfeit $136 million and admit wrongdoing for violating U.S. laws. They also agreed to return $94 million held in their accounts to U.S. customers and to agree to be monitored for 18 months by government officials.

This deal was approved on Wednesday by a judge in Manhattan and the NETeller board of directors on the Isle of Man.

The deal fell into place after two of the company’s founders, Stephen Lawrence and John David Lefebvre, both recently pled guilty to charges of criminal conspiracy. After the two men were arrested, the company stopped handling transactions from the U.S., but it was too late to avoid the ire of the Bush administration.

At its most prosperous point, NETeller employed nearly 170 people and had 600,000 member accounts.

2007 WSOP Main Event - Final Results

The 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event is in the books, and Jerry Yang is the latest bracelet winner. He’ll take home $8.25 million, plus even more from future endorsement deals. Amazingly, the father of six referred to himself as a “very, very part-time player.”

A BLISTERING PACE
As the final table got started at noon on Tuesday, it took less than two hours before chip leader Philip Hilm was sent to the rail by the aggressive play of Yang. Then, in rapid succession, Yang eliminated Lee Watkinson, Lee Childs and Hevad Khan.

At this point, only five players remained:

Jerry Yang $73,040,000

Tuan Lam $19,915,000

Raymond Rahme $15,955,000

Jon Kalmar $13,405,000

Alex Kravchenko $5,170,000

At this point, Yang lost a few hands and became cautious for a time. Meanwhile, Raymond Rahme eliminated Jon Kalmar in the late afternoon, and the four remaining players stuck around until well after midnight.

THE WEE SMALL HOURS

Around 1 a.m., after more than 100 hands of play, Alex Kravchenko went all-in against Yang with an ace and king. He got no help on the flop, and Yang revealed three eights to eliminate another player.

Yang didn’t take long to marvel at his good fortune, however, as he eliminated another player just a few hands later. Raymond Rahme’s pocket kings fell to Yang’s two aces. Rahme received $3 for the third place finish.

HEAD TO HEAD

It all came down to Jerry Yang (a 9/1 favorite according to Bodog) and Tuan Lam, both Asian-born immigrants. The two dueled for around 30 hands until Yang finally overwhelmed his opponent with aggressive play and a superior chip stack. Tuan received $4.8 million for the second place finish.

ABOUT JERRY YANG

The 39-year-old Yang was born in Communist Laos and escaped from there when he was a child. He played cards to pass the time in a Thai refugee camp. He didn’t begin to learn English until he was 13 years old, but he now works as a social worker and psychologist. Oh, and he just started playing poker two years ago.

He won his way into the tournament via a $225 buy-in satellite event in California.

For anyone who thinks the American dream is dead, all you have to do is take one look at Jerry Yang.

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham - Bodog Odds

David and Victoria Beckham have taken America by storm since landing in California last week The soccer icon and star of the LA Galaxy is still nursing a sore ankle and has yet to play in a game (although he is scheduled to take the field on Saturday in a friendly against Chelsea). Meanwhile, wife Victoria (aka Posh Spice) has launched her own reality show called, appropriately enough, Victoria Beckham: Coming to America.

On the debut episode, she called actor Eddie Murphy (who fathered the baby of Spice Girls bandmate Scary Spice) the Beverly Hills Cock and said that she would like to spit in his food and cut his penis off. While admitting that she can’t sing or dance, the Posh one also waxed philosophic about Scientology and close friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

Oh, and the couple recently posed for a steamy pictorial where they rolled around naked on the hood of a car and made out. And I thought the Brits were supposed to be normal.

BODOG ODDS ON THE BECKHAMS

Bodog is offering several prop bets on the antics of the Beckhams, especially the stick-thin Victoria. With her penchant for curse-filled tirades and crude humor, this little Spice may actually take some of the heat off of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan for a while. Keep in mind that the maximum bet for each is $50.

Which late night talk show will be the first to have both Beckhams as guests?

Jay Leno 5/8

Jimmy Kimmel 4/1

David Letterman 5/2

Craig Ferguson 5/1

Conan O’Brien 8/1

Will Victoria Beckham sign to appear in a movie featuring Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes in 2007?

Yes +400

No -700

Will David and Victoria Beckham convert to Scientology before March 1st, 2008?

Arturo Gatti vs. Alfonso Gomez - Fight Results

Damn!

Arturo “Thunder” Gatti is officially retired thanks to Alfonso Gomez and his rugged performance on Saturday night.

Gomez, a first-season contestant on The Contender punished Gatti throughout the fight before stopping him with a big right hand in the 7th round of their welterweight fight at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Gatti, the slugger with throwback features and a throwback style, has now suffered his third KO loss in the last four fights. He announced his retirement from his dressing room after the fight.

“I’m coming back -- as a spectator,” said the 35-year-old Gatti.

Gomez used his brawling style to batter Gatti around the ring, and he was leading on all three scorecards when the knockout came (60-54, 58-56 and 58-56). In the seventh, Gomez threw about 20 unanswered punches with many of them hitting home. When he was finally dropped, Larry Hazzard, head of the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, climbed into the ring and personally stopped the match at the 2:12 mark.

According to the odds on Bodog, Gatti was a -205 favorite coming into the fight, and Gomez was a +165 underdog. Looks like a few smart bettors out there made some extra scratch.

ROY JONES JR. WINS

Also on Saturday night, former pound-for-pound best Roy Jones Jr. won a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Anthony Hanshaw. The 38-year-old Jones won on the scorecards 114-113, 117-110 and 118-109. In the process, he won the vacant IBC Light Heavyweight title.

KERMIT CINTRON DOMINATES

Kermit Cintron smoked mandatory contender Walter Matthysse with a brutal second round KO to retain his Welterweight belt. If you haven’t seen the knockout, search around for it on the Internet. It’s worth a look.

Date Set for iMEGA Lawsuit

The lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez which looks to have the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act overturned has been assigned a hearing date of September 4th, 2007. The case will be heard by Judge Mary L. Cooper of the US District Court in Trenton, New Jersey.

A CONSTITUTIONAL MATTER

The lawsuit was filed by iMEGA, also known as Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association. Their hope is that the new law, which went into effect in late 2006, will be declared unconstitutional on the grounds that it violates the First Amendment right to freedom of speech and commercial association, as well as the Tenth Amendment’s protections of states’ rights to control online gambling.

According to Joe Brennan Jr,, iMEGA founder and former AOL exec, “The UIGEA can still be enforced prior to the September 4th date, but we feel confident that the judge will prevent that from happening.”

NOT EVEN BILLIONAIRE PLAYBOYS ARE SAFE

If that’s the case, then maybe it will prevent government agents from lurking in airports and waiting to arrest online bigwigs like Bodog’s Calvin Ayre. Bodog is holding their first American MMA event in New Jersey today, but Ayre will not be able to attend for fear of Bush’s goons scooping him up when he sets foot in the country.

MORE FROM BRENNAN

“We’ve laid out our argument on the merits of granting a temporary restraining order for the enforcement of UIGEA for the Court,” Brennan said. “From iMEGA’s standpoint, we did not want the defendants (US Dept. of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Reserve) to use the allowed 60 days in their summonses in order to stall and give themselves more time to promulgate the regulations for UIGEA.”

FINAL THOUGHTS

September 4th will be a very important day in the history of online gambling. If Judge Cooper finds in favor of iMEGA, then we may see a quick and merciful death of the loathsome UIGEA. Still, President Bush did make the UIGEA into law, and he’s shown a complete contempt for the United States Constitution during his time in office. Even if the ruling goes against the U.S. government, we may not have heard the last of this.

But it’s a start.

Arturo Gatti vs. Gomez - Fight Preview and Bodog Odds

On Saturday, July 14th, former world champ Arturo “Thunder” Gatti will once again step through the ropes. This time around, his opponent will be young slugger Alfonso Gomez. The fight will take place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey and be shown on HBO. In the same evening, HBO will also broadcast Kermit Cintron versus Walter Matthysse and WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito versus Paul Williams.

ARTURO GATTI

Gatti has a record of 40 wins and 8 losses with 31 KOs. He hails from Jersey City, New Jersey via Montreal, Canada. He is 35-years-old, 5’7 ½” and 140 pounds. He is trained by Buddy McGirt. While most of his career has been spent as a relentless brawler, Gatti has transitioned into more of a boxer-puncher in recent years, thanks to his tutelage under McGirt.

Gatti has waged epic wars in the ring, and his opponents read like a who’s who of the boxing world. He’s notched wins over previously undefeated Thomas Damgaard, Gabriel Ruelas, Tracy Patterson, Mickey Ward, Terron Millett and Jesse James Leija. He has also fallen to the likes of Mickey Ward, Carlos Baldomir, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Angel Manfredy, Ivan Robinson (twice) and Oscar De La Hoya.

Strengths

Gatti has recently moved up to welterweight, and this seems to have helped him. He was struggling to make weight, and the move should allow him to slug it out at his more natural size (while retaining his strength).

As anyone who has seen one of his fights will tell you, Gatti is the epitome of the gutsy boxer. In fact, he’s about the closest thing out there to a real-life Rocky Balboa. He can absorb shot after shot and just keep coming. While he’ll probably end up with brain damage, it does make for a damned exciting fight.

Weaknesses

Gatti bleeds on the way to the ring. Well, not really, but you get the point. He’s been cut a ton over his career, and now he tends to bleed in the ring without much provocation. That’s never a good thing. He also has recurring problems with his right hand, and it seems to get injured at some point in most of his fights.

Gatti has also struggled in the past when faced with fighters who have superior speed. Ivan Robinson and Angel Manfredy come to mind.

ALFONSO GOMEZ

Gomez has a record of 16 wins with 3 losses and 2 draws, with 7 KOs. He fights out of Whittier, California by way of Guadalajara, Mexico. He’s 26-years-old, stands 5’9” and weighs 151 pounds. He is trained by his father, Alfonso Gomez Sr..

This boxer-puncher likes to keep pressure on his opponents, but he lacks big-time power. He’s on a roll lately, and his last five bouts have resulted in four wins and one draw.

In his young career, Gomez has never fought anyone in the upper echelons of the boxing world. In fact, he’s never been in a fight which went past eight rounds. He has wins over Martin Concepcion, Carson Jones, Ahmed Kaddour and Luciano Perez. He’s lost to Jesse Feliciano - one of three fights between these two men (Gomez won one and the other was a draw).

Strengths

Gomez is good at landing volleys, and he’s quick enough to counter jabs thrown halfheartedly. He likes to keep the pressure on, and he’s skilled at turning fights into brawls, something which might be foolhardy against Gatti.

Weaknesses

He’s never faced an elite level of competition, and he’s never been past eight rounds. The crowd in Atlantic City will be decidedly pro-Gatti.

BODOG ODDS

At the moment, here are the current betting lines according to Bodog. The maximum bet for either of these is $500.

Who will win the fight?

Arturo Gatti -205

Alfonso Gomez +165

How many rounds will the fight last?

Over 9 ½ -270

Under 9 ½ +210

DARE TO GAMBLE PREDICTION

Expect Gatti to dominate this one. Gomez may have nothing to lose, but he’s never faced a fighter like Gatti. No matter how many shots he lands, Gatti will just keep coming. Gomez likes to turn fights into brawls? Pal, there’s nobody better at brawling than Arturo Gatti. We’re predicting a TKO win for “Thunder” in the 7th round.

New British PM Kills Supercasino Plan

Plans for a British supercasino have been scrapped thanks to new Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The decision was not well received in Manchester, the proposed site of the casino, and the six-year struggle cost taxpayers and the gambling industry millions of pounds.

Under PM Tony Blair, six casinos were put on a short list to run the supercasino. Each spent up to 200,000 pounds on their bids, and the Casino Advisory Panel, which made the final selection, cost 400,000 pounds.

However, plans will still move forward for building 16 smaller casinos in England, but they will not contain the unlimited-stake, unlimited-prize slot machines that the supercasino had promised.

Mr. Brown did vote in favor of the legislation when Tony Blair was PM, and his reversal on the matter had drawn accusations of hypocrisy from many camps. But, in fairness, the supercasino issue has been on shaky ground since March when the order authorizing the facility in Manchester was voted down by the House of Lords by three votes.

“This is an issue on which there is no consensus found in the two Houses of Parliament,” said Brown. “And it is an issue now subject to reflection over the next few months.”

Sir Richard Leese, leader of the Manchester City Council, seemed unfazed by the news of Brown’s decision.

“There is no need for panic,” he said. “We will continue to push for a destination casino in East Manchester, which we believe will deliver the maximum regeneration benefits.”

Mark Burch (-145) vs. Yoshiki Takahashi (+115)

Amar Suloev (-200) vs. Chael Sonnen (+160)

You know, I couldn’t help but notice that Bodog head Calvin Ayre has stated that he will be unable to attend the event. I guess he’s afraid that U.S. officials will pick him up at the airport and arrest him for his online gambling activities. Considering what’s happened in the past year, I really can’t blame him.

2008 Presidential Election - Bodog Odds

It’s still a ways until the next United States presidential election (November 4th, 2008, to be exact), but it’s never too early to start betting money on the eventual winner. Thanks to the good folks over at Bodog, you can do that very thing right now.

BODOG ODDS FOR PRESIDENT

At the moment, here are the odds being offered on Bodog for the future winner of the 2008 presidential election. The maximum amount which can be wagered is $50. Let’s take a look.

Hillary Clinton 2/1

Barack Obama 9/2

Rudy Giuliani 5/1

Fred Thompson 6/1

Mitt Romney 9/1

Mike Bloomberg 15/1

John Edwards 15/1

Al Gore 13/1

John McCain 16/1

Bill Richardson 40/1

Mike Huckabee 60/1

Chris Dodd 60/1

Ron Paul 75/1

Chuck Hagel 90/1

Dennis Kucinich 90/1

Wayne Allyn Root 100/1

Duncan Hunter 100/1

Ralph Nader 125/1

Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey 700/1

Stephen Colbert 800/1

Vermin Supreme 800/1

Lawrence Conner 800/1

Don Cordell 800/1

Jackson Kirk Grimes 900/1

Field 50/1

THE FRONTRUNNERS

Currently, there are about six candidates who are leading the pack. According to Ted Rall, Clinton, Edwards, Giuliani, McCain, Obama and Romney are the front runners. The Washington Post lists Clinton, Edwards and Obama as the Democratic frontrunners, while MSNBC’s Chuck Todd has pointed to Giuliani and McCain as the Republican frontrunners.

Clinton, Obama and Romney managed to raise over $20 million in the first three months of 2007, while Edwards, Giuliani and McCain raised over $12 million.

THE FRINGE CANDIDATES

Of course, there are always people who run that don’t have a realistic chance. For that matter, anyone who meets the qualifications for President and pays a fee can add their name to the list, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll actually make it onto the ballot. Still, if you’ve got a few hundred thousand friends, then you might have a shot.

No doubt, political activist Ralph Nader will be back, as he can’t seem to get enough of getting beat. Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report is a gag candidate, while Vermin Supreme is an activist and street-theater performer. Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey is a professional wrestler, witch, Satanist and creator of the Vampires, Witches, and Pagans Party.

Still, Bodog gives Sharkey a better chance to win than Jackson Kirk Grimes. Grimes is a candidate for the United Fascist Union who wants to abolish Christianity and replace it with a form of Roman Paganism fused with the political system of Fascist Italy. It‘s a shame that the top candidates don‘t have to debate guys like Sharkey and Grimes. That would be priceless.

More Slots for California - Thanks to Schwarzenegger

Thanks to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, four of California’s richest Indian tribes are about to become even richer. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians will each be able to double or triple the size of their casino operations in exchange for paying the state hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes.

INDIANS VS. UNIONS

This also puts an end to a lengthy battle between the Indian tribes and the labor unions. The unions claimed that the casino expansion bills which Schwarzenegger signed Tuesday would give casinos a unique amount of leverage in keeping workers from organizing. Seeming to have lost the battle, the unions have now threatened to gather signatures for a ballot measure to block the expansion. However, a solid effort has yet to materialize.

MORE SLOT MACHINES

The tribes will be allowed to install nearly 17,000 new slot machines and other table games. The Yurok tribe, the largest but also one of the poorest, will also be allowed to install up to 99 slot machines on their reservation near Klamath, California.

58,120 slot machines are already in operation throughout the state, and last year they raked in an estimated $7.7 billion in revenue. That’s a pretty incredible amount when you figure that Nevada’s total income in 2006 was $12.6 billion.

While it may not get the press of Las Vegas or Atlantic City, there’s obviously a lot of good gambling to be done in the Golden State.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Lamon Brewster - Boxing Results

On Saturday night, IBF and IBO heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko looked to avenge his 2004 TKO loss against Lamon Brewster.

FIGHT RESULTS

Klitschko dominated the fight from the opening bell, working his jab under the tutelage of trainer Emanuel Steward. Brewster had no answers for the stiff jab and right hands of the champ, and he found himself rocked by two left-right combinations. He barely survived until the bell, and Brewster’ corner stopped the fight before the start of the seventh.

It was later learned that Klitschko broke his left hand (specifically the middle finger) somewhere during the fight. It was iced after the fight, and the champ is now wearing a cast from his left hand to up past his elbow. It is estimated that it will take eight weeks to heal.

Klitschko improves his record to 49-3 with 44 knockouts, while Brewster drops to 33-4 with 29 knockouts.

BODOG ODDS

Prior to the fight, Bodog had the following odds posted:

Winner of the Fight
Wladimir Klitschko -450
Lamon Brewster +300

Total Rounds in the Fight
Over 7 ½ EVEN
Under 7 ½ -140

MLB Home Run Derby - Vladimir Guerrero Wins

Monday night saw the annual MLB Home Run Derby take place, but home run king Barry Bonds elected to sit this one out. That meant the field was wide open, and men like Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols were eager to claim the trophy.

Round One

The competition started slowly, with the first-place leaders after one round having just five homers each. Minnesota’s Justin Morneau, Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder, Detroit’s Magglio Ordonez and defending champ Ryan Howard were all eliminated in the first round.

Round Two

In round two, Toronto’s Alex Rios hit five consecutive homers to finish with 17 solo blasts over the first two rounds. Colorado’s Matt Holliday was eliminated when Vladimir Guerrero knocked nine balls over the fence in the second round. Albert Pujols, who has recently endured a dry spell when it comes to home runs, finished just one run shy of the finals.

The Finals

In the finals, Alex Rios seemed to tire a bit, managing just two more homers to finish with 19 total. Guerrero only needed three to win the event, and he homered on the first pitch. He finished the competition off with three swings to spare.

Wimbledon - Final Results

Wimbledon concluded this week, and both Venus Williams and Roger Federer must be very satisfied.

Williams moved back into the top 20 rankings for the first time in a year after defeating Marion Bartoli of France 6-4, 6-1. In the loss, Bartoli moved from a 19 ranking to a career-high 11th.

Not much changed at the top of the men’s rankings, as No. 1 Federer defeated No. 2 Rafael Nadal for the second straight year. The final score was 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-2.

If you bet on the outcome with a sports book like Bodog, you probably didn’t make much if you bet on Federer. Venus Williams, on the other hand, is a whole different story. Coming into the event, she was considered past her prime and in something of a career slump. On the wrong side of 30, everyone assumed that she was all but finished. Looks like those opinions may have to be shelved for a while longer.

UFC 73: Stacked - Full Results

On Saturday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship held their latest event, which was entitled UFC 73: Stacked. The event was held at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, and it was one of the strongest cards in the company’s history. Let’s take a look at the results.

UFC 73 RESULTS

The Undercard

Frank Edgar vs. Mark Bocek - Edgar was dominant through the round. He showed better striking skills and was able to get the top position when the fight went to the ground. Bocek got rocked early and never fully recovered. Edgar eventually got his back and started raining down punches. The ref stopped the fight at 4:55.

Chris Lytle vs. Jason Gilliam

Lytle got on top and threw punches. Gilliam reversed, but Lytle went for an ankle lock. Lytle got side control and locked in both a reverse triangle choke and wristlock. Gilliam passed out at the 2:15 mark.

Jorge Gurgel vs. Diego Saraiva

Back and forth fight with both men working hard throughout. Gurgel, however, was the dominant force throughout and was busier. The judges certainly thought so, as they gave him straight 30-27 scores. The crowd booed and numerous points, verifying that most UFC crowds are comprised of morons.

Stephen Bonnar vs. Mike Nickels - After an initial scramble, Bonner got his back and worked for a choke. Nickels escaped, but Bonnar went for another choke and landed this one. Nickels tapped at 2:14.

Main Card

Minotauro Nogueira vs. Heath Herring - Nog looked strong in the early goings, but Herring caught him with a kick to the head and put him down (this is what happens when you fight someone for the third time). Herring tried to finish but Nog recovered. After that, Nog seemed a little leery and preferred to take the fight to the ground and go for submissions. Herring proved difficult to submit, however, and this one went to the judge’s cards. Nog won 29-28 across the board. Not the impressive performance that UFC officials were hoping for.

Sean Sherk (Lightweight champ) vs. Hermes Franca - Franca looked to stand and trade, but Sherk took it to the ground at every opportunity. This continued for 5 full rounds, with Sherk working the Ground and Pound strategy. France got his licks in, but The Muscle Shark looked stronger. The crowd was really restless for this one, since a lot of the action was on the ground. The final scores were 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46, all for the defending champ, Sherk.

Tito Ortiz vs. Rashad Evans - Crowd was really wild for this one, and Ortiz got his usual mixed reaction. Tito Ortiz looked to take the fight to the ground, while Evans seemed to want to beat Tito’s head in. At some point in the fight, Ortiz had a point taken away for grabbing the cage to avoid a takedown. This directly affected the outcome, as it ended up being a 28-28 draw. There’s no doubt that this one will have a rematch.

Anderson Silva (Middleweight champ) vs. Nathan Marquardt - Silva rocked him early, but Marquardt took him to the ground. After nothing much happening, John McCarthy stood them back up. Silva got a takedown and started landing punches from the top. The ref stopped it and awarded Silva with the win.

Kenny Florian vs. Alvin Robinson - Florian dominated with takedowns, eventually moving into a full mount and landing with punches and elbows. It was stopped late in round one, and Florian picked up another win and called out Sean Sherk.

2007 WSOP Main Event - Day 1A Recap

The Main Event of the 2007 World Series of Poker is now officially underway. Day 1A started with 1,287 players, larger than the total number of entrants in any year prior to Chris Moneymaker’s win. The Day 1A group featured suck players as Bobby Baldwin, Huck Seed, Amarillo Slim Preston, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan.

THINNING THE HERD

As the day came to an end, only 450 players were left standing after nearly 16 hours of play.

Matt Jansen became the first player eliminated, as his pocket aces fell to George Dolorfan’s flush. He had lots of company, as other Day 1A bustouts included Andy Black, Michael Mizrachi, Terrence Chan, Dewey Tomko and Marco Traniello.

Phil Hellmuth’s record of 11 bracelets will stand until next year, as both Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan were eliminated on Day 1A. Brunson went all-in with an A-Q after the flop came A-Q-6. Unfortunately, his opponent was holding a pair of queens.

Johnny Chan had an A-K, but he was sent to the rail after his opponent revealed trip tens.

CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS

There were lots of celebrities entered in the tourney, as actors like Tobey Maguire, Brad Garrett and Ray Romano looked to win big. Romano was eliminated after his pair of queens ran into pocket aces, but Garrett survived the first day and picked up an extra $2,000 in a side bet with Romano over who could last the longest.

COURT JESTER

Jeff Madsen played the entire first day dressed as a court jester due to losing a bet with Joe Sebok and Gavin Smith. He was still able to make it through the first day, but there’s been no word on whether or not he’ll have to don the costume for a second day.

SURVIVORS AND THE TOP 10

Notable survivors include Julian Gardner, Tobey Maguire, Billy Baxter, Tom “Donkey Bomber” Schneider, Barry Greenstein and Joe Beever.

Here are the current Top 10:

Tinten Olivier — 270,500

Trouble for Florida Poker Players

It didn’t take long before poker players in Florida had their fun ruined by the authorities. Only five days prior, a new law had taken effect which allowed an increase in legal poker stakes. According to the law, poker could now be played for stakes higher than $1/$2 as of July 1st.

The law was no doubt popular, as hundreds of players lined up to play poker at 12:01 am on July 1st. As the casinos had decided to interpret the law, players could not be made to buy-in for more than $100, but they could play for as much money as they wanted to. In fact, several games with five-digit stacks of chips were documented.

BEING KEPT DOWN BY THE MAN

But after only a few days, the casinos were informed by authorities that the $100 amount was the maximum buy-in, and that players couldn’t buy more than that at any time.

This has led some in the industry to question whether or not this new interpretation was handed down after complaints from the state’s influential parimutuel interests (horse and dog racing).

A FURTHER DEFINITION

The specific part of the law reads:

“A cardroom operator may conduct games of Texas Hold’em without a betting limit if the required player buy-in is no more than $100.”

Sounds simple enough, right? I guess not, as authorities showed up at various casinos on July 5th, including the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, to begin their crackdown.

As the authorities interpret the law, the $100 figure is the maximum amount that any customer can purchase in chips at any single time. Re-buys will also now be limited to the $100 level.

At the moment, $1/$2 and $2/$5 games of No-Limit Hold’em are being offered at Florida casinos. Better enjoy them while you can, as there’s never any telling when the state may swoop in with a new set of “interpretations.”

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Lamon Brewster - Preview and Bodog Odds

This Saturday, July 7th, IBF champ Wladimir “Dr. Steelhammer” Klitschko will take on Lamon “Relentless” Brewster in a rematch from the Cologne Arena in Cologne, Germany. The fight will take place live at 5 pm ET and then replayed at 10:30 ET. In their first match, the hard-hitting Brewster decked Klitschko and got a KO victory.

Here’s how the two fighters match up:

WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO

The current IBF champ, Klitschko has a record of 48 wins and 3 losses, with 43 KOs. He is 31-years-old, 6’6”, and weighs 241 pounds. He is trained by Emanuel Steward.

His most recent fight was against Ray Austin. In that fight, Klitschko landed a series of left hooks to the skull of his opponent and won via knockout in the second round. He also scored a seventh-round TKO win over previously unbeaten Calvin Brock in November.

He also has wins over Chris Byrd, Samuel Peter (despite being dropped three times), Axel Schulz, Phil Jackson, Monte Barrett, Francois Botha, Ray Mercer, Jameel McCline, and David Bostice.

His losses have come against Corrie Sanders (KO in the 2nd), Lamon Brewster (KO in the 5th) and Ross Puritty (TKO in the 11th).

Strengths

Klitschko is a big, powerful heavyweight who can put away an opponent when he smells blood in the water. He’s got a stiff jab and likes to throw right crosses down the pipe. His endurance has increased, and the additional of Emanuel Steward immediately makes him more dangerous.

Weaknesses

While he works very hard in camp, Klitschko has a tendency to run out of steam when he goes past the 4th round. His lateral movement still needs work, although his height and wingspan often make up for that. He has also had a tendency to be cut over the left eye, mostly the result of head butts. With three KO losses on his resume, one had to wonder just how solid his defense is.

LAMON BREWSTER

The challenger and former WBO champ has a record of 33 wins and 3 losses, with 29 KOs. He is 33-years-old, 6’1”, and 228 pounds. He is trained by Jesse Reid.

During his career, he has scored wins over Wladimir Klitschko, Luan Krasniqi, Andrew Golota. His three losses have come at the hands of Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich (unanimous decision), Clifford Etienne (decision) and Charles Shufford (decision). His last fight, against Liakhovich, was more than 14 months ago.

Strengths

Brewster has an above average right cross and a solid left hook. He also has heavy hands which allow him to finish off opponents. He’s got a great chin and has demonstrated a lot of heart. Willing to trade shots, he is capable of producing crowd-pleasing fights.

Weaknesses

He tends to struggle against fighters with lots of movement, and his defense has been suspect in the past. The layoff of over 14 months could also be cause for concern.

BODOG ODDS

As expected, our pals at Bodog have a couple of betting options available for the fight. They are:

Winner of the Fight

Wladimir Klitschko -450

Lamon Brewster +300

Total Rounds in the Fight

Over 7 ½ EVEN

Under 7 ½ -140

PREDICTION

This one has all the makings of a slugfest. Neither guy has great defense, but look for Klitschko’s continued improvement under the supervision of Emanuel Steward to be the difference.

I’m betting this one is over quick, and Klitschko comes out on top with a 3rd round TKO win. Still, considering the fact that he won their first match, Brewster looks awfully tempting at +300 odds.

Sweden Has New System to Eliminate Problem Gambling

According to our good pals at Radio Sweden, the Swedish government’s online gambling organization, Svenska Spel, is about to introduce a new artificial intelligence software which is designed to target problem gambling.

The CEO of the government-owned company which offers sports book, lottery, poker, casinos and bingo, Jesper Karrbrink, claimed that the software analyzes each player’s bets and keeps track of how much they wager, under what circumstances, and how frequently. He also noted that use of the system is voluntary and requires players to use their personal Svenska Spel betting cards.

The system is designed to spot players who may have a growing gambling problem. Creators of the system, ICU Intelligence, claim that the system spots problem gamblers 90 percent of the time.

If a person is identified as being “at risk,” Svenska Spel will turn off all marketing to that individual and urge them to consider their current betting patterns. They will also be urged to take a test designed to further spot gambling addiction.

ICU also announced plans to eventually make the system available to land-based casinos.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

While it might sound a bit extreme, at least the Swedes are taking a reasonable, scientific approach to the whole issue of online gambling. In the United States, our Bible-thumping politicians just try to outlaw the thing and spoil everyone’s fun.

Still, one has to wonder how many clients will actually volunteer to be scrutinized by the new system?

Poker's Player of the Year - Who Will It Be?

As the WSOP in Las Vegas winds down, there are only five point-earning events left to determine poker’s Player of the Year. The format this year is a bit different, with 100 points going to anyone who wins a tournament, regardless of event type, buy-in cost, or size. This is meant to recognize the best overall player, not just the player who manages to win a couple of big no-limit events.

THE DONKEY BOMBER

At the moment, Tom “Donkey Bomber” Schneider is in first, and he also happens to be the only double-bracelet winner at this year’s WSOP. He’s made three tables, and many are comparing his play to last year’s Player of the Year, Jeff Madsen, who made the final table in four events and took home two bracelets.

JEFFREY LISANDRO

Second place belongs to Jeffrey Lisandro, who has managed to finish in the money on five events. If he wants to overtake Schneider, he will have to finish seventh or better in the no-limit 2-7 lowball with rebuys or the limit hold’em shootout. A tall challenge, but one that will be interesting to watch.

OTHER CONTENDERS

Third, fourth and fifth places belong to Scott Clements, Phil Hellmuth and Chris Bjorin respectively. All three need to win a WSOP event to take the lead.

Allen Cunningham and Steve Billirakis have also had noteworthy years, even though neither man has a realistic shot of catching Schneider. Cunningham won the POY in 2005, then went on to finish in the top 10 in 2006. Another top 10 finish in 2007 is well within reach. That kind of consistency is simply amazing in the tough world of poker.

THE TOP TWENTY

In case you’re keeping a record of such things, here’s how the top 20 rounds out at the moment.

Tom Schneider 255 pts
Jeffrey Lisandro 220 pts
Scott Clements 167 pts
Phil Hellmuth 165 pts
Chris Bjorin 165 pts
Scotty Nguyen 160 pts
William Durkee 155 pts
Fred Goldberg 150 pts
Alexander Kravchenko 150 pts
Eric 'Rizen' Lynch 145 pts

Poker's Player of the Year - Who Will It Be?

NFL Europa Closes

Bad news for football fanatics. After 15 years in operation, NFL Europa is closing its doors.

It started in 1991 as the World League of American Football, with 10 teams situated in the U.S. and Europe. The league took two years off in 1993 and 1994 but returned in 1995 as a six-team all-European league. The 2007 season was the first year for the league to bear the name NFL Europa. Unfortunately, a name change could not stop the $30 million a year losses.

New NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that it was time for the league to begin concentrating on regular-season games outside of the United States. In October, NFL owners voted to play up to two regular-season games per year outside of the U.S. The first such game is October 28th in London between the Dolphins and the Giants. Other games are being looked at in Germany, Mexico and Canada.

In a statement, Goodell said, “A foundation of American football fans in key European markets has been created and the time is right to shift our strategy. The next phase of our international growth is to focus on initiatives with global impact, including taking advantage of developing technologies that make the NFL more accessible on a global scale and ensuring the success of our new international series of regular-season games.”

The final World Bow championship was played less than a week before the announcement. In that contest, the Hamburg Sea Devils defeated the Frankfurt Galaxy 37-28 in front of a crowd of 48,125.

Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest - Full Results

While millions of Americans celebrated Independence Day, thousands of onlookers gathered at Coney Island, New York to celebrate gluttony. Of course, I’m talking about the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.

In all, twenty contestants competed in the event, but all eyes were on six-time consecutive champ Takeru Kobayashi and his stiffest competition, Joey Chestnut. Would Chestnut finally be able to dethrone the Japanese eating machine or would Kobayashi once again go home with the mustard-yellow sash?

THE DRAMA UNFOLDS

Prior to the event, Kobayashi had a wisdom tooth removed and was later diagnosed with arthritis of the jaw. While he sought out a chiropractor for the pain, rumors swirled that the legend might not even participate.

Kobayashi furthered the drama by stating, “Already, I can’t open my jaws more than a little bit. There’s no pain only if I open my mouth about enough for one finger. More than that is painful, and I can’t open it.”

BODOG ODDS

Going into the event, Bodog had set the odds as follows:

Odds to Win the Contest

Joey Chestnut 1/1

Takeru Kobayashi 10/13

Anyone Else 15/1

How Many Hot Dogs Will the Winner Eat?

Over 57 -125

Under 57 -105

A LEGEND IS MADE

Luckily for fans, Kobayashi did show up for the competition, and the stage was set. The competition was fast and furious, and Chestnut and Kobayashi quickly separated themselves from the pack. As time ticked away, both men munched on hot dogs like their lives depended on it. Finally, time ran out and everyone held their breath.

By eating a record 66 hot dogs, 23-year-old Joey Chestnut was crowned the new champion. According to the civil engineering student from San Jose, California, “It’s time it came back to America…on the Fourth of July.”

Kobayashi vomited after the competition ended, a sure sign of the toll the contest takes on the human digestive system. Undaunted, the Japanese former champ vowed to return strong in 2008.

Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago finished in third with a total of 49 hot dogs. He dedicated his win to heiress Nicky Hilton, citing the fact that she doesn’t get as much publicity as her older sister, Paris.

Las Vegas Desert Classic - Bodog Odds for Darts

The Las Vegas Desert Classic is an annual darts tournament held in July since 2002. The original venue was the MGM Grand, but the event has since relocated to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
Organized by the Professional Darts Corporation, this is one of the biggest events in the sport of darts. The total prize purse is a hefty $250,000, and the matches are played in the morning so that they can be broadcast live in prime-time back in the UK.

The event officially started on July 2nd and will run until July 8th (with televised coverage starting on July 4th on Sky Sports).

BODOG ODDS

So who will walk away as the big winner? Will it be Phil Taylor, the man who won the event in 2002, 2004 and 2005? Or how about defending champ John Part? Or maybe one of the field of other hungry dart pros?

Luckily, Bodog has made things simple by providing a betting line for this upcoming event. There are no parlays, and the maximum bet on who will win the event is $300.

Phil Taylor 3/2

Internet Gambling Petition Passes 5000 Signatures

To show their displeasure with the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, a group of concerned online citizens started the Internet gambling petition in April of 2007. This document will be hand delivered to every congressman and senator in Washington in mid to late July, before everyone goes home on summer break.

While the petition had seemed to stall out at around 4,000 signatures, Chad Hills, a gambling analyst for the conservative Focus on the Family website, has inadvertently caused a resurgence in interest. Hills noted that Casino Gambling Web was going to be sending a representative to Washington to lobby for the repeal of the UIGEA. He then mocked the efforts of the gambling industry and stated that the petition has only garnered around 4,000 signatures.

The article found its way to the popular 2+2 forums, where outraged gamblers decided to stick it to Mr. Hills. In one day, the signatures on the petition jumped up 10%, and there are now over 5,000 unique names on the document.

According to one representative of the gambling community, “The goal is 10,000 signatures, but the more signatures added the more lawmakers will pay attention.”

Be sure and add you voice to the cause by clicking to sign the petition.

NETeller Founder Pleads Guilty

Stephen Eric Lawrence, one of the founders of NETeller and its former chairman, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy in connection with the alleged transfer of Internet gambling funds. He entered the plea Friday at a hearing in Manhattan before U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel.

Prior to entering his plea, Lawrence said, “I came to understand that providing payment services to online gambling businesses serving customers in the United States was wrong.”

Lawrence was arrested in January along with another NETeller founder, John David Lefebvre. The 47-year-old Lawrence faces up to five years in prison on the charge. His sentencing is set for October 29th, while Lefebvre is still awaiting trial.

Lawrence, a resident of the Bahamas, agreed to cooperate with the government’s investigation as part of the plea agreement and agreed to a forfeiture of $100 million dollars. He was NETeller’s chairman from May 2006 until October 2006. According to NETeller, Lawrence and Lefebvre are no longer associated with the company.

To further cover their ass, NETeller has also stopped handling all transactions involving online gambling from customers in the United States.

And in case you’ve been living under a rock, all of this drama stems from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act which President Bush signed into law in October of 2006. This law, which has met with great criticism , makes it illegal for banks and credit card companies to process payments from American customers to Internet gambling sites.

Lidsay Lohan to Jail? - Bodog Has Odds

Linday Lohan, the red-headed hottie who actually rivals Paris Hilton and Britney Spears for media attention, is once again in trouble.

COKE, NOT PEPSI

According to police, Lindsay Lohan had cocaine in her system, as well as twice the legal limit of alcohol, when she crashed her car in Beverly Hills back on May 26th. Cocaine was also found in her car at the time.

Several days after she crashed her Mercedes into a Sunset Boulevard curb, Lohan, who turns 21 on Monday, checked herself into a Malibu rehab center. But not before paparazzi snapped photos of her passed out in a car outside of Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel.

BODOG ODDS

Now that all the details are out, the big question is whether or not Lohan will do jail time. With cocaine added into the equation, things don’t look exactly promising. Still, she’s a celebrity, so there’s just no telling what sort of magic her high-priced lawyer will be able to work.

Currently, Bodog is offering two different bets on the subject. Both bets have a limit of $50. They are:

Will Lindsay Lohan go to jail for her May 26th DUI arrest?

Yes -300

No +200

If Lindsay Lohan goes to jail, will she spend more time behind bars than Paris Hilton (Hilton was in jail for 23 days)?

Yes -110

No -130
