Heavyweight Boxing Tournament is Coming!

For those of you who like to bet on boxing, here’s something to keep an eye on.

The heavyweight division is arranging a tournament of sorts, with four fighters slugging it out for the right to challenge Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. These fighters include Chris Byrd, Alexander Povetkin, Calvin Brock and Eddie Chambers. And while these men are battering each other senseless, the champ will be taking the rest of the year off in order to allow his injured left hand to heal.

ENTER THE DRAGON

This tournament doesn’t have John Saxon or Jim Kelly, but it should still be pretty damned interesting.

In the first match of the tournament, Chris Byrd (40-3-1, 21 KOs and has lost twice to Klitschko) will be taking on 2004 Russian gold medalist Alexander Povetkin (13-0, 9 KOs). Povetkin is viewed as one of the rising young heavyweights in the world, but he could have a tough time against the cagey Byrd when they meet on October 27th in Germany.

The second bout will be between Eddie Chambers (29-0, 16 KOs) and Calvin Brock (31-1, 23 KOs) and will take place November 2nd on Showtime.

After the two winners have been decided, a final fight to determine the top contender will take place sometime in early 2008.

CALVIN BROCK

“The Boxing Banker” Calvin Brock suffered the only loss of his career when he was knocked out by Klitschko back in November. Since then, the 32-year-old fighter has been on the comeback trail, winning two straight matches. Although smaller than many heavyweights, Brock is a slick southpaw who moves well in the ring. In the past, this has allowed him to run rings around some of his larger, less agile, opponents.

EDDIE CHAMBERS

Chambers, 25, is excited about the opportunity to showcase his skills.

“This is the opportunity I’ve been looking for,” he said. “It’s sort of like the NFL playoffs. Win a couple of rounds and get to the Super Bowl against Wladimir Klitschko. That’s just what I intend to do -- not only get to the Super Bowl, but win it too, a world heavyweight title. But my focus and attention right now is preparing for my semifinal opponent, Calvin Brock.”

ALEXANDER POVETKIN

Povetkin, 27, positioned himself for the tournament by dominating his way to a decision win over contender Larry Donald in June.

According to his co-manager Kalle Sauerland, “This is the chance Alexander has been waiting for. We have no doubt he will prevail in this interesting tournament.”

CHRIS BYRD

But he first has to get by 37-year-old Chris Byrd, a former Olympic champion himself. Byrd has lost twice to Wladimir but has also defeated brother Vitali. Byrd has taken on all comers in his career, and many fighters have ducked him over the years due to his difficult style and tendency to make opponents look bad.

Maybe this is just the shot in the arm that the lackluster heavyweight division needs. Let’s hope so, or we may find that more and more rising young stars defect to the ranks of MMA.

Be sure and keep an eye on sports books like Bodog, as odds for these fights will be appearing in the near future.

Now You Can Register for Poker Tournaments in Advance

Do you ever go to your local casino to play in a tournament only to find that all the seats are already filled? Do you hate to stand in long registration lines with blowhards and B.S. artists? Well, now there’s a new service that allows you to bypass all the aggravations of registering for a poker tournament.

INTRODUCING PTSeats

PTSeats allows its members to pre-book tournament seats and charge it to their credit card. You must be a member to take advantage of this service, but membership is free.

You can register days or weeks in advance for poker tournaments at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. As they are just starting up, this is the only casino that currently supports the service, but PTSeats’ website promises that they will soon offer The Venetian, The Wynn and The Orleans in Las Vegas. The Hard Rock Seminole in Florida is also mentioned as upcoming.

HOW IT WORKS

Customers are charged a fee based on a percentage of the buy-in for the tournament which the customer is entering. For example, a$300 (+$50) tournament would cost you $14 in service charges. That’s a total cost of $364 ($300 +$50 + $14). Fourteen bucks is a small price to pay to avoid having to wait in a 45 minute line.

Once you register through the service, you’ll receive a printable ticket which you simply present at the casino. Your table and seat number will already be listed on the ticket.

This service is also very convenient because tournament buy-ins have traditional been a “cash only” affair. The additional of paying by credit card makes things all the more simple for the customer.

They’ve even enlisted the services of Phil Gordon to promote the site. Phil Gordon, of course, is the highly respected player and self-made millionaire who has made the final table of numerous WSOP events. Besides lending his image to the PTSeats site, Phil also chimes in weekly with his “Tip of the Week” feature.

Bodog Changes Domain Name

Imagine my surprise when I tried to go to Bodog’s website today and found that there was nothing there! After a few minutes of frantic searching, however, I found out what the problem was.

BODOG VS. 1ST TECHNOLOGY

The company is currently involved in a dispute over the www.bodog.com domain name with 1st Technology Inc. The company, a technology licensing firm with an interest in multi-media patents for advanced gaming, filed a lawsuit in the state of Nevada claiming that Bodog’s software infringes on patents filed in the United States and elsewhere.

Bodog failed to appear in court, however (probably fearing that U.S. officials would arrest them over the ridiculous UIGEA law). At that point, the court was left with no choice but to rule against them. As of August 1st, Bodog has been ordered to pay 1st Technology $49 million in damages. They were also ordered to remove all DNS servers associated with Bodog and Calvin Ayre (the billionaire playboy founder of Bodog).

1ST TECHNOLOGY AND LITIGATION

1st Technology has done this before. In December of 2005, litigation between the company and SportingBet PLC and Paradise Poker was resolved by a licensing agreement. The same thing also happened with NDS Group PLC and Orbis Technology.

While Bodog may be able to settle the whole matter with a licensing agreement of their own, the implications for the online gambling are huge. If the 1st Technology patent really does cover the process used by most online gaming companies, then they could wind up suing the majority of the industry.

BODOG CONTINUES

But Bodog is still in business. For the time being, they have moved to a new domain name (www.newbodog.com), and the site is exactly the same as the old one. Customers can access their accounts and bet just like always.

Of course, it is troublesome when you consider the search engine implications. If the situation is not resolved soon, all the high-ranking links on sites such as Google will go away. This could result in significant losses for the company. No doubt, this is the reason why others have entered into a licensing agreement with 1st Technology instead of engaging in a lengthy legal battle.

According to a statement from Calvin Ayre, “We are fighting this dispute. We are confident that we will win, but until all is settled, I do not want our battle to interrupt your play.”

Do you like to play poker? Well, now you have a chance to become famous just by getting online and playing a few hands. Bodog is offering players an opportunity to appear on the cover of the November issue of Online Poker Pro magazine, Europe’s leading magazine dedicated to online poker.

And not only will you appear on the front of the magazine, you’ll also get an in-depth interview devoted just to you! It’s the perfect place to talk about your high score on Donkey Kong or unusual obsession with Jessica Alba. It’s also the kind of globe-spanning coverage that attention hogs like Hellmuth always seem to so desperately crave.

According to Bodog founder and billionaire playboy Calvin Ayre, “Online poker is not always just about the money. It’s also about talent and about the individual who beats others to be the best.”

Well said, Calvin. Spoken like a true billionaire playboy.

HOW TO ENTER

So how do you get a chance at this great prize? It’s pretty easy, actually. All you have to do is head over to Bodog and register to play poker in any Player’s Choice quarterfinal or semifinal game between August 19th and September 18th. For each game you play in, you will have your name entered into a random drawing to appear as the November cover story.

The prize drawing will be held on September 19th. Also keep in mind that the satellite tournaments for some of these events start as low as $1, so you really have nothing to lose. Heck, you might find yourself winning a seat at the upcoming WSOP Europe.

The next time you’re playing a game of Texas Hold’em, wouldn’t it be nice if you could lean over and get advice from legendary pro Daniel Negreanu?

Well, now you can. Sort of.

I-PLAY VIDEOS

Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu has teamed up with respected mobile entertainment company I-play to produce a series of instructional videos exclusively for mobile phones. Available on carriers such as Sprint and Cingular, the series is titled “Win at Texas Hold’em.”

Each clip runs from two to three minutes and features advice straight from Negreanu. Over 100 clips were filmed, and they are designed to help players of all skill levels. Categories available include:

1. Beginner

2. Advanced

3. Bluffs and Tells

4. Tournament Tips

5. Winnings Secrets

Scenes from Daniel’s video blog will also be incorporated.

According to David Gosen, CEO of I-play, “The mobile video signals a ground-breaking new product and an industry first, offering bite-sized chunks of entertainment to develop the Texas Hold’em aficionado in all of us.”

And I’m sure he wouldn’t lie, right?

WIN AT TEXAS HOLD’EM

While Sprint and Cingular are already on board, other major North American carriers are expected to release the series within a few months.

The clips are customizable and will be available in streaming video and pay-per-clip options. If you go the route of streaming video, you will be able to search for, bookmark and play your favorite clips.

Even better, I-play has announced that they plan to launch a game based around the series sometime later this year. Let’s hope it’s better than most cheesy Texas Hold’em video games which have hit the market.

Personally, I’d like to see one where you can come over the table and deck Hellmuth. Or maybe one where Evelyn Ng looks hot but never makes a final table. The possibilities are endless.

NBA Gambling Scandal Continues

The nightmare continues. On Tuesday, in a move clearly designed to cover their collective asses, the NBA selected former federal prosecutor Lawrence B. Pedowitz to spearhead a review of their policies regarding gambling.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that this is all fallout from the Tim Donaghy scandal. Donaghy, of course, was the NBA referee nabbed by the feds for trying to fix games on behalf of organized crime. Seems that Timmy was in debt to the mob and was looking for a way to get out of the hole. Besides making calls to influence the outcome of games, Donaghy himself also wagered on games that he was officiating - a clear no-no in the regime of David Stern. I just hope he used a reliable sports book like Bodog.

HAPPY HANUKKAH

Pedowitz is a partner in the New York law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz. When they’re not listening to Adam Sandler comedy albums (just kidding), they’ll study the league’s anti-gambling efforts and review the methods used to hire and monitor the referees.

According to commissioner David Stern, “There is nothing as important as the integrity of our game and the covenant we have with our fans. In order to preserve their trust, we will make every effort possible to ensure that our processes and procedures are the best they can be.”

MORE REFS IN HOT WATER?

Last week, it was reported by ESPN Radio that Donaghy would name up to 20 other refs who also took part in gambling activity, although this doesn’t mean that they fixed games. NBA refs are barred from any type of gambling….uh, except for horse racing, that it (can someone explain that one to me?). In fact, they can go to a casino, but they are not allowed to be in the gaming areas.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

What amazes me is how the NBA has lucked into so little coverage on this issue. Between Barry Bonds’ chase of the record and Michael Vick’s war on dogs, Donaghy’s activities have somewhat slipped under the radar.

What’s worse when you really think about it? A guy strangling dogs, or a man who is putting large sums of money into the pockets of the mafia? It could be argued that the money Donaghy earned for the mob went on to fund such unsavory things as drug dealing and prostitution.

But I guess PETA doesn’t get quite as worked up over such trivial matters.

UK to Ban Gambling Advertising

On September 1st, new UK legislation will kick in which will ban around 1,000 gambling websites from advertising in UK territories. This ban will extend to radio, television, newspapers, magazines, taxis, buses, subway, and even some websites.

The new law is designed to prohibit foreign gambling sites with insufficient legal bases from attracting British players.

To be considered acceptable, a foreign company must be placed on the white list. To do so, they must prove that their rules are regulations are adequate, especially when it comes to stopping kids from gambling, preventing money laundering, maintaining a fair atmosphere and protecting people vulnerable to gambling (aka gambling addicts).

Online casinos which operate out of the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and Alderney will not need to apply for inclusion on the white list. These companies have been deemed to be in compliance with all UK legal requirements.

Gambling Security Consultant Arrested!

Here’s an odd little story from the world of casino security.

It seems that Steve Forte, a security consultant for both casinos and law enforcement agencies, was recently arrested on charges of conspiring to scam high-stakes poker games at the Borgata Casino.

BUSTED

Forte, 51, was arrested by the New Jersey State Police in a private hotel room with three other men (Joseph T. Ingargiola, Stephen Phillips, and James C. Harrison). They had in their possession high-tech equipment often used for cheating, including tiny video cameras, earpiece receivers and computer equipment.

They were charged with attempted theft by deception, computer criminal activity, use of cheating devices and conspiracy.

According to Peter Aseltine, a spokesman for the New Jersey attorney general’s office, the men were targeting private poker games.

NOT THE FIRST TIME

While Forte maintains his innocence, according to friends, this is also not the first time that he’s been involved in questionable activities.

He was convicted in New Jersey of a gambling-related third-degree felony in 1990, and he also pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing at Harrah’s Casino in Reno (he was initially charged with two felony counts and pled to the lesser charge).

LEGEND IN THE BUSINESS

According to Bill Zender, a friend of Forte’s and gaming consultant, “The rest of us are small change compared to him. There is nobody out there in the industry right now that you can put on the same level.”

Forte’s website even offers a four-part video series which is “designed to help protect all those that play in private games from card and dice cheaters.”

Forte has consulted for everyone from the MGM Mirage and the Golden Nugget to Harrah’s Entertainment and Station Casinos. He has also worked with district judges, district attorneys and police departments.

His $200 book entitled “Casino Game Protection” is considered the bible of the industry, and he was even the opening speaker at the 2006 World Game Protection Conference.

His latest book, “Poker Protection: Chating…and the World of Poker,” was released in January.

Update - NFL Preseason Picks - Week 1

Well, I gave my preseason picks for the Saturday games of the NFL preseason, and I'm sure you're all sitting on the edge of your seats to see how I did. Picks were made based on the odds provided by Bodog.

Here's a rundown of the final scores:

NFL PRESEASON SCORES

Jacksonville 17 Miami 18

Kansas City 12 Cleveland 16

Green Bay 13 Pittsburgh 9

Carolina 24 New York Giants 21

Chicago 20 Houston 19

Washington 14 Tennessee 6

Arizona 23 Oakland 27

My record for the week was a less-than-impressive 3-4. I was confident that the Raiders would collapse, regardless of whether it was preseason or the regular season. Looks like I was wrong.

I also ended up picking numerous underdogs, and that came back to bite me. What the hell was I thinking?

Oh, well. There's always next week. Hope everyone out there had more success than I did.

NFL Preseason - Week 1 - Bodog Odds

Good news football fans - the NFL season is almost upon us! And while it’s still too early to bet on regular season games, we can wager on the preseason thanks to sports books like Bodog.

Just be sure and exercise caution. Preseason is like a bizarre world, where up is down and down is up (why else would the pitiful Texans only be a 1 ½ point underdog to the Bears?). Third string quarterbacks will post impressive numbers and fantasy stars will sit on the bench and rest. Just be sure you take this into account before you plunk down your hard earned dollars.

BODOG ODDS - NFL PRESEASON

Here are the odds for the games taking place on Saturday, August 11th:

Green Bay Packers (+6) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (-6)

Jacksonville Jaguars (-2 ½) vs. Miami Dolphins (+2 ½)

Kansas City Chiefs (+3) vs. Cleveland Browns (-3)

Washington Redskins (+3) vs. Tennessee Titans (-3)

Carolina Panthers (pick) vs. New York Giants (pick)

Chicago Bears (-1 ½) vs. Houston Texans (+1 ½)

Arizona Cardinals (+1) vs. Oakland Raiders (-1)

DARE TO GAMBLE - DARE TO PREDICT

And just for the heck of it, I thought I would show off my NFL prognostication skills by selecting the winners of each game. I’ll update you on how I did on Sunday or Monday. I by no means suggest that you take my advice as anything more than a complete amateur at work.

Green Bay Packers (+6) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (-6)

Jacksonville Jaguars (-2 ½) vs. Miami Dolphins (+2 ½)

Kansas City Chiefs (+3) vs. Cleveland Browns (-3)

Washington Redskins (+3) vs. Tennessee Titans (-3)

World's First Completely Electronic Poker Room

Poker history has been made. Strangely, it didn’t happen in Vegas or Atlantic City. Instead, it went down at the Four Winds Casino Resort in New Buffalo, Michigan.

So what was the big event? The unveiling of the world’s first completely electronic poker room. This room features 15 of the PokerTek “Poker Pro” ten seat tables, and 4 of the heads-up tables. Other casinos have these machines, but the Four Winds is the first casino to go totally automated.

THE NEXT GENERATION IN GAMBLING

There is no dealer. You check in with an electronic floor person, and the only real people you’ll interact with are the waitresses, supervisor and cage attendant. And no doubt, someone out there is trying to find a way to replace these positions (although I‘d hate to see the cocktail waitresses go).

Oh, and don’t forget about the other players. They’ll be right there staring at their screens, engaged in such games as Limit Hold’em, No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha, and several other variations. The casino is also scheduled to have numerous single and multi-table tournaments.

And it seems to be catching on. Electronic tabled are popping up in poker tournaments around the world. For example, a $1,000 buy-in Hold’em/Omaha event will be played at the Aussie Millions at the Crown in Melbourne. The game will take place on a PokerPro table.

Dealers, start looking for another line of work.

JOSH “KOS” KOSCHECK VS. GEORGES “RUSH” SAINT-PIERRE

Josh Koscheck

Koscheck will be moving up to a whole new level when he takes on the former welterweight champ. Koscheck competed in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter but was eliminated after losing a decision to Diego Sanchez. On the pro level, he has since avenged his loss to Sanchez. He also has wins over Jeff Joslin and Jonathan Goulet. In fact, his only loss on the pro level came via a rear naked choke from Drew Fickett.

Georges Saint-Pierre

The former UFC Welterweight champion, he is currently ranked as the second best 170 lb. fighter in the world. He holds wins over Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn, Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk and Karo Parisyan.

After losing a match to Matt Hughes, Saint-Pierre got another shot at UFC 65. The result was different this time, as he scored a TKO in the second round. Unfortunately, he was upset in his very first title defense against Matt “The Terra” Serra at UFC 69. Serra was an 8-1 underdog.

BODOG ODDS

Here are the current odds according to Bodog. There are no parlays, and the maximum wager is $500.

Georges St. Pierre -240

Josh Koscheck +190

RANDY “THE NATURAL” COUTURE VS. GABRIEL “NAPAO” GONZAGA

Gabriel Gonzaga

Gonzaga holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is a former member of the legendary Chute Boxe Academy of Brazil. With a record a 9-1 (his only loss coming to Fabricio Werdum), Gonzaga shocked the MMA world when he knocked out Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic with a head kick to earn a shot at Randy Couture’s title. Gonzaga is 28 years old, stands 6’2” and weighs a solid 243 pounds.

Randy Couture

Couture is the current UFC Heavyweight champion and a member of the UFC Hall of Fame. He is the only five-time champion in UFC history, as well as being the only man to hold titles in the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight divisions.

Couture is proficient in numerous MMA techniques, but his favorite is the Ground and Pound style. He has wins over such notable fighters as Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort, Tito Ortiz, Pedro Rizzo, Kevin Randleman, Tim Sylvia and Jeremy Horn.

Is his most recent fight at UFC 68, he came out of retirement to take on Heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia. At the age of 43, he dropped the 6’8” Sylvia with a right hand 8 seconds into the match. He went on to get a 5 round unanimous decision win.

Couture is 6’2” and weighs 225 pounds. His MMA record is 15-8.

BODOG ODDS

No parlays. Max bet is $500.

Gabriel Gonzaga -135

Randy Couture +105

AOL Enters World of Online Gambling

A short time ago, Internet giant Yahoo! opened up an online poker room targeting citizens in the UK. This caused massive waves in the industry, mainly for the reason that online casinos will now have to compete with companies that actually own their own search engines. Such an advantage in marketing and advertising, immediately made Yahoo a player in the online gambling business.

Now it’s someone else’s turn.

ENTER AOL

AOL has officially entered into the realm of gambling. They recently signed an agreement with German-based online betting company FLUXX. As part of the agreement, they will be marketing sports betting on the Internet in the UK. AOL already had a previous deal with FLUXX subsidiary JAXX UK to market the lottery to German users.

Sadly, due to recent regulations in the United States (the dreaded UIGEA), American gamblers will not be able to enjoy this new service. But if you‘re from Europe, you can go ahead and start rejoicing.

According to AOL executive Michael Steckler, “We are looking at a range of partnerships and initiatives to drive our business forward in Europe.”

Well, I’m sure that this will do the trick.
