NFL Week 4 - Predictions and Bodog Odds

Week 4 of the NFL season is almost upon us. Can the Rams win a game? Will Tom Coughlin get fired before mid-season? Can LT bounce back to become the fantasy juggernaut that we’ve all become accustomed to? Watch the games tomorrow and find out!

WEEK 3 RESULTS

So how did I do on my picks last week? Well, I took way to damn many visiting teams, I can tell you that. The points were just too tempting to pass up, thought. I mean, the Bills getting +17?! I had to take that one. Of course, they lost by a lot more than 17 thanks to the red-hot Patriots.

My record last week was a pitiful 4-9-2. That brings my season record to 20-22-4.

I remain confident, however, and convinced that I can turn this ship around before it crashes into the rocks and kills everyone on board.

WEEK 4 NFL ODDS

Here are the odds for Week 4 of the NFL season, courtesy of Bodog:

Raiders (+4) @ Dolphins (-4)

Texans (-3) @ Falcons (+3)

Christina Applegate - Babe of the Day

Remember back to the days of Married with Children. Was there anybody who didn't want to bang Kelly Bundy? She's all grown up, now, but actress Christina Applegate is still smoking hot. That's why she's receiving our Babe of the Day honors.

Christina Applegate - Babe of the Day

European Union Demands Money from America

You have to hand it to President Bush. When his administration screws something up, they don’t do it halfway. Take the online gambling issue, for example. Instead of just taxing the industry and allowing everyone to profit, the Republicans go and push through the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (or UIGEA) which seeks to totally eradicate the online gambling industry.. The international community protests, but Bush doesn’t pay that any attention. Hell, he’s the President of the United-freakin’-States. Why should he have to listen to a bunch of snotty Europeans, anyway?

THE RENT IS OFFICIALLY DUE

Now, the European Union (or EU) is pursuing a $100 billion compensation bid on behalf of leading figures in the European gambling industry. It seems that these fellows are more than a little steamed about all the lost revenue caused by the “Bushies” and the damnable UIGEA. The last I heard, our Prez was trying to schedule a hunting retreat with Dick “Friendly Fire” Cheney and these individuals to “talk things over.”

Since the UIGEA was passed into law (making it illegal for banks to accept US money transfers to and from gambling sites), European gambling firms such as PartyGaming and Sportingbet have been forced to sever all ties with the US market. Luckily, our friends at Bodog have their own bank and continue to do business.

According to one expert, “The US has used an illegal trade barrier. This sets a precedent. If the EU does not act, it could encourage the US to do the same elsewhere.”

A PROBLEM THAT WON’T GO AWAY

Last week, the US tried to make the issue go away by offering some form of compensation to the EU. Obviously not satisfied, the EU rejected the offer and set a deadline of October 22nd for America to pay up. According to EU Trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson, “The offer made by the US so far is insufficient. We are continuing to negotiate to secure improvements.”

That’s a nice way of saying, “We’re not letting you off the hook that easily.”

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott - Odds and Predictions

On October 12th, 2007, the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City will host Cage Fury Fighting Championships 6: Unleashing the Fury. The main event will be legendary MMA tough guy Tank Abbott taking on legendary backyard brawler Kimbo Slice.

FIGHT ODDS

While Bodog has yet to post their fight odds (although they should be up any day now), I did come across odds on a few other sports betting sites. It appears that Kimbo Slice is being viewed as the favorite on all. For example, one site had Kimbo as a -360 favorite, while Tank was a +290 underdog.

FIGHT CARD

The complete card consists of:

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott

Ricardo “Cachorrao” Almeida vs. Dennis “Superman” Hallman

Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz vs. John Marsh

Derek Panza vs. Duke Roufus

Jim Miller vs. Chris Brennan

Brian Geraghty vs. Chris Ligouri

Eric Henry vs. Gregor Gracie

Jose Rodriguez vs. Mike Littlefield

Warren Kekebah vs. Nick Catone

Randy Durant vs. Tom Poe

TANK VS. KIMBO

So who will win this slugfest between two of the biggest names in the world of brawling? Let’s take a closer look.

The Ground Game/Submissions

Tank is known for his brawling, but he wrestled both in high school and college. This will only be Kimbo’s second fight in the cage, although he did win his first fight with a guillotine choke. In his career, Tank has two submission wins by using the neck crank. Don’t expect this one to go to the ground.

Edge: Tank Abbott

Experience

Tank’s first fight took place all the way back in 1995. Since then, he’s went on to compile a record of 9 wins and 13 losses. 7 of his last 8 fights have ended in a loss of Tank. He’s also 42 years old. He has, however, fought against competition like Don Frye, Frank Mir, Vitor Belfort and Dan Severn.

Kimbo has only had one MMA fight, and that was against boxer Ray Mercer. Before that, he engaged in backyard brawls with bouncers and random toughs. These fights ended up on the web and made Kimbo a mini-celebrity.

While Tank is certainly the more experienced fighter, one has to wonder if his age will work against him in the match.

Edge: Tank Abbott

Stand-Up

Tank has a huge punch, but he usually throws it in a sloppy fashion. Like a classic brawler, he wings haymaker after haymaker and hopes that something will connect. While Kimbo certainly isn’t Ali, he does have a more orthodox style, and working with Bas Rutten has no doubt allowed him to improve upon it even more.

Edge: Kimbo Slice

PREDICTION

Tank is way past his prime and was never that good to begin with. He’s always had problems with conditioning, so he’ll be in trouble if the fight isn’t over quickly. Kimbo, on the other hand, is taller and younger and seems to have superior technique.

Of course, with both men throwing bombs, either fighter has the classic puncher’s chance. Still, I have to give the overall edge to Kimbo and predict a first-round knockout in his favor.

New Bodog Domain Name

While Bodog can still be found for the moment at newbodog.com, it appears that the online casino and sportsbook has found a new, more permanent, home. This new URL is bodoglife.com.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Bodog made the switch to a new URL last month after their original domain names (bodog.com and bodog.net) were turned over to 1st Technology LLC as the result of a patent infringement case. Bodog failed to show for the court date, so 1st Technology was awarded damages. Bodog failed to pay the money by the deadline, so the judge ordered that their domain names would now become the property of the plaintiff.

SPIN DOCTORS

But the newbodog name was just a temporary fix to keep everything up and running. Now, a month later, Bodog has settled into its permanent bodoglife.com home with the new slogan “This is Bodog. This is the Life.”

They claim that the move is in keeping with their philosophy of “High stakes, hot women and killer parties in exotic locales.” Wow, sounds like someone read a book on Hugh Hefner, doesn’t it?

MESSAGE FROM THE BOSS

On their website, founder Calvin Ayre stated, “As you may know, there've been some changes at Bodog recently because of issues related to our domain name. We temporarily released newbodog.com a few weeks ago, but in an effort to move to a more permanent home we are pleased to announce bodoglife.com. We reacted quickly, as we always will, so you can enjoy the hottest site on the net with no interruption in play.”

So if you enjoy casino gambling, sports betting and living the life of a playboy, be sure and visit their new site over at bodoglife.com. Oh, and screw you, 1st Technology LLC.

O.J. Simpson Trial - Bodog Odds

O.J. Simpson is at it again. Not content to search for his wife’s killers on gold courses across the country, The Juice has now transformed himself into a vigilante who prays on memorabilia thieves. It all started when OJ and some buddies from a wedding party decided to retrieve some of his old sports memorabilia. Things went steadily downhill from there.

THE JUICE GOES TO JAIL

It all started when Simpson was brought in for questioning on September 14th regarding missing memorabilia from the Palace Station Casino. During the interview, he admitted taking the items, saying that they had first been stolen from him. He denied that he or his posse carried weapons, and he also denied breaking into the room.

The next day, one of his accomplices was arrested and charged with multiple counts of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. The man was on his way to the airport when police nabbed him.<>
The following day, September 16th, Las Vegas police arrested Simpson. He was charged with robbery using a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary with a deadly weapon, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and coercion. If convicted on all charges, he faces more than 60 years in prison.

On September 19th, Simpson was released on $125,000 bail. No word if he has undertaken a search for the “real robbers.”

BODOG ODDS

As with most celebrity craziness, Bodog is offering odds on it. Here’s your chance to make a little extra money courtesy of O.J. Maybe you can send it all to Fred Goldman…just like The Juice.

UFC 76 - Fight Card and Bodog Odds

On Saturday, September 22nd, 2007, the UFC will hold their latest event. Known as UFC 76: Knockout, it will be held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. While the card was supposed to feature the main event of “The Iceman” Chuck Liddell vs. “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva, that match never materialized. Instead, it will be Liddell vs. “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine, both of whom are coming off of knockout losses at UFC 71.

The event will also feature the UFC debut of highly-respected PRIDE fighter, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Considered by many to be the best light heavyweight in the world, Rua will be taking on fan-favorite Forrest Griffin.

BODOG ODDS FOR UFC 76

NFL Week 3 - Bodog Odds and Predictions

Week 2 of the NFL season is in the books, and there were plenty of unexpected outcomes. The Browns winning and scoring over 50 points in the process?! The Saints and the Rams both falling to 0-2?! It’s a new season, and that means that all bets are off.

Speaking of bets, I make my picks every week based on Bodog’s odds. In Week 1, I went an impressive 10-3-2. I came back down to earth in Week 2, putting in a terrible 6-10 performance. That brings my two-week total to 16-13-2. Here’s hoping that I can improve come Week 3. Speaking of which…

A Cure for Gambling Addiction?

If you know someone who suffers from gambling addiction, there may be help on the way. Researchers at the University of Minnesota have found that a common amino acid found in most health food stores may help to curb gambling addiction in some people.

A MIRACLE CURE?

Known as N-acetyl cysteine, the amino acid is often associated with a feeling of reward by the human brain. During the study, it was administered for eight-weeks to a group of 27 test subjects.

60 percent of the participants reported experiencing fewer urges to gamble. 13 subjects were then asked to take part in a double-blind study for an extra six weeks. During this stage, some were given the amino acid and others were given a placebo.

Of those who received the supplement, 83 percent reported less of an urge to gamble. Those who received the placebo were less successful.

According to Dr. Jon Grant, the leader of the study, “Only 29 percent of those on placebo were able to maintain any of their improvement that they had gotten previously. So this told us that there was some type of effect going on from this amino acid.”

Researchers believe that the amino acid helps to boost a neurochemical that is often out of whack in the brains of people with addictions. The neurochemical is known as glutamate.

THE LONG-TERM IMPACT

So what does this mean for problem gamblers? Well, the research is still in the early stages, and Grant is trying to get funding to conduct a much larger study to verify his results.

His is not the only research taking place, however. There has been some success treating problem gamblers with opiate antagonists, which are the same drugs used to treat alcoholism. Anti-depressents have also been found to be effective in some cases.

If Grant can prove that amino acids are an effective treatment for gambling addiction, it would provide a much cheaper alternative to prescription medications. However, he does caution people to not experiment with health food supplements on their own, as the regulations governing these products are very few.

DARE TO PREDICT

So how did I do this week picking against Bodog’s odds? Well, I actually surprised myself by getting 10 correct picks, 3 incorrect picks and 2 pushes. Let’s hope this is the beginning of things to come.

5 OBSERVATIONS

1. The Browns suck. Period.

2. Cadillac Williams just can’t stay healthy. The sooner Gruden realizes this, the better off he’ll be. Of course, he’ll be fired after this season, anyway.

3. It’s going to be a long year for the Falcons. With the Michael Vick cloud still hanging over them, they’re going to have to go out every week and get pounded due to poor play from Joey Harrington. I bet they wish they’d kept Matt Schaub around.

4. For all the hype, the Cowboys defense looked less-than-impressive. Granted, Terrance Newman was out, but Giants looked far better than they should have.

5. After sputtering last year, it looks as though the Panthers may be back. They dominated the Rams and held Steven Jackson to almost nothing. Jake Delhomme also looked in mid-season form.

MTV Video Music Awards - Results and Odds

It was an eventful year for the MTV Video Music Awards. Britney Spears made her return to the stage and, by all accounts, stunk up the joint. Kid Rock reportedly whipped up on Tommy Lee during a brief altercation in the audience (with both men being kicked out). And Amy Winehouse cancelled her performance after fellow songstress Lily Allen was denied a visa by the U.S. government.

But you probably only care about who won and how it applied to the odds set down by Bodog, right? Well, let’s take a look at all the winners. In a few cases, I placed the odds next to the winner‘s name.

WINNERS AT THE 2007 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

Monster Single of the Year: "Umbrella," Rihanna featuring Jay-Z
Quadruple Threat award: Justin Timberlake
Earth-shattering Collaboration: "Beautiful Liar," Beyonce featuring Shakira
Male Artist of the Year: Justin Timberlake (1/1)
Female Artist of the Year: Fergie (2/1)
Best Group: Fall Out Boy (5/4)
Best New Artist: Gym Class Heroes (5/2)
Video of the Year: "Umbrella," Rihanna featuring Jay-Z
Best Editing: Ken Mowe for Gnarls Barkley's "Smiley Faces"
Best Director: Samuel Bayer for Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around ... Comes Around"
Best Choreography: Marty Kudelka for Justin Timberlake's "Let Me Talk to You/My Love"

KANYE WEST

Bodog was also taking bets on whether or not Kanye West would interrupt another artist’s acceptance (+400 for Yes and -700 for No). He didn’t, but he reportedly threw a fit offstage about his inability to win an award and vowed to never appear at the Video Music Awards again. I’m sure President Bush was behind the whole thing.

UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion is now in the books. While numerous favorites took home the win, a shocking upset no doubt left a few bold gamblers with a lump of cash in their pockets. Which underdog pulled off the win? Continue reading to find out. I’ve also posted the Bodog odds for your convenience.

UFC 75 RESULTS

1. Jess “Joker” Liaudin (-115) defeated Anthony “The Crush” Torres (-115) by referee stoppage at 4:10 in the first round due to strikes. Torres was bleeding from the nose. Liaudin looked very strong.

2. Dennis Siver (+160) defeated Naoyuki Kotani (-200) via knockout at 2:04 in the first round. A decent little upset for those who wagered on Siver, but it’s hardly the biggest of the night.

3. Thiago Silva (-350) defeated Tomasz “Gorilla” Drwal (+275) via referee stoppage at 4:23 of the second round due to punches.

4. Gleison Tibeau (-180) defeated Terry Etim (+150) by a decision after 3 rounds.

5. Houston “The Assassin” Alexander (-180) defeated Alessio “Legionarius” Sakara (+150) in one minute with a flurry of knees and then some wicked ground and pound.

6. “Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis -(205) defeated Paul Taylor (+160) at 4:14 of round one by armbar submission. After being rocked, Davis recovered and transitioned from side control into a full mount. He then slapped on the armbar for the win. Some experts, by the way, seemed to think the fight should have been stopped when Taylor had Davis in serious trouble. But it wasn’t, and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

7. “The French Sensation” Cheick Kongo (+280) defeated Mirko Cro Cop (-360) by unanimous decision after 3 rounds. Wow! The +280 underdog picks up the win, and we might have very well seen the end of Cro Cop in the UFC (or anywhere else, for that matter). Kongo did a nice job of pressing Mirko against the cage, delivering knees (including a few low ones) and basically just eating up time and picking up the win. It wasn’t pretty, but he got it done. The final scores were all 29-28 for Kongo.

8. Michael “The Count” Bisping (-225) defeats Matt “The Hammer” Hamill(+185) by split decision after 3 rounds (29-28, 27-30, 29-28). A very close fight, and Bisping may have very well got the hometown decision. Still, he continues to roll on along.

9. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson defeats Dan “Hollywood” Henderson by unanimous decision after 5 rounds (48-47. 49-46, 49-46). A competitive fight which might not appeal to the casual fan (as it didn’t feature two men hitting each other in the head for the whole fight). Still, Jackson got out with the win over a very tough opponent. He is now the unified champion, and it will be interesting to see what the UFC does with that.
