Lane Garrison Update - Sentenced to Prison

Here’s an update to the Lane Garrison story we posted way back in April. You can see the original story right here.

LANE GARRISON - VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER

On December 2nd, 2006, the 26-year-old Garrison, one of the stars of the television show Prison Break, was driving a 2001 Land Rover when it jumped a curb and crashed into a tree. Garrison and two 15-year-old girls were injured, but 17-year-old Vahagn Setian was pronounced dead at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

In May, he pleaded guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. Following this plea, he was ordered to undergo a 90-day stay at the California Institute for Men in Chino. Afterwards, he was turned over to Los Angeles officials and has since been held in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

LANE GARRISON - SENTENCED TO PRISON

On Wednesday, Garrison was sentenced to a total of 40 months in a state prison. He could have been sentenced to as much as six years and eight months.

Garrison addressed the court and said the following, “I just want to say how sorry I am to the Setian family. I am sickened by my behavior on that night. My thoughts keep coming back to that night.”

He will receive credit for the 91 days he has already served, and his actual sentence will amount to around 20 months with good behavior time factored in.

He was also ordered to pay close to $300,000 to the Setian family and to the two girls injured in the accident.

According to his lawyer, Garrison has no plans to appeal and has accepted his sentence. It’s at least refreshing to see someone accept responsibility for what they did.

BODOG ODDS

Way back when, we posted the Bodog odds on how much time Garrison would be sentenced to. The options were:

1 day to 6 months - 4/1 odds

6 months and 1 day to 1 year - 3/2 odds

1 year and 1 day to 18 months - 2/5 odds

18 months and 1 day to 2 years - 7/2 odds

More than 2 years - 3/1 odds

Unibet Arrest Causes Uproar in the EU

Looks like the Dutch are taking a cue from the Bush administration and rounding up “evil” gambling moguls at the airport. On Tuesday, Dutch authorities arrested Unibet CEO Petter Nylander as he boarded a plane in Holland to head home to the UK. He was detained on a French warrant.

ARREST WARRANT

The warrant was from 2006 and it concerned the French Lottery Authorities’ claim that Unibet was in violation of French law protecting lotteries and horse racing. The laws cited have been on the books for over 100 years.

ANARCHY IN THE EU

The arrest has caused a great deal of outrage throughout the European Union. In recent years, both EU and French courts have ruled businesses not in violation of the laws. In fact, they have often additionally ruled that the law goes against the EU treaty.

But the French just eat the pastries, bang their mistresses, and call the arrest “perfectly normal.”

As you can imagine, the acting CEO of Unibet, Ragnar Hellenius (great name for a movie villain), was more than a little pissed. He said, “This situation is clearly unacceptable and extraordinary in ours and in any industry. It is our view that this use of the possibility for cross-border legal actions is a clear abuse of their true aim, and in all aspects, disproportionate. Unibet is licensed in the UK, Malta and Italy for gambling, listed on the OMX Nordic Stock Exchange and a company complying with European law.

This is clearly a breach of the EU Treaty and the fundamental principles of the European Union. We are upset of this unlawful act and harassment against our company and a citizen of Europe and we will take every action possible to bring this matter to justice. This criminalization of a specific individual is a tactic that we have seen French authorities using before and something we will not tolerate. We take for granted that Petter Nylander will be released immediately.”

Still, I bet Ragnar won’t be setting foot in Holland anytime soon..

THOSE DAMNED FRENCH

So far, Nylander has not been charged with anything, and he is awaiting further word on his status. In other words, he’s simply being held indefinitely. Here’s hoping that he gets out before the French brainwash him and turn him into one of those crazy street performers you see outside of Notre Dame Cathedral.

And people wonder why Calvin Ayre of Bodog never ventures to the U.S.

Absolute Poker Faces Cheating Allegations

For an online poker room, about the worst thing that can happen is to come under allegations of cheating and security breaches. On second thought, there is something that’s worse - if those allegations are proven to be true. Sadly, that’s what happened recently at Absolute Poker.

THE OWNER SPEAKS

Joe Norton owns Tokwiro Enterprises, who in turn hold 100% interest in Absolute Poker. On Sunday, he said the following in a press release:

“The integrity of our poker system was compromised by a high-ranking trusted consultant employed by AP whose position gave him extraordinary access to certain security systems. Like you, I have not been happy that during the initial stage of our investigation, AP has not been more forthcoming in providing a timely or comprehensive explanation on this matter, giving rise to anger, suspicion, and concern on the part of our valued customers. I hope that our customers can appreciate that this remains an incredibly complex and sensitive issue, and I want to give you my strongest possible assurance that we will be as forthcoming as possible on how this breach occurred and what we are doing to remedy the situation.”

POTRIPPER AND SCOTT TOM

This entire fiasco started around a month ago. Complaints started rolling in about a possible “superuser” account being used to peek at all the hole cards of the players at a table during a high stakes poker tournament.

The whole thing was well documented on the 2+2 forums. One player got suspicious when an opposing player (going by the handle “Potripper”) enjoyed an incredible run of luck (including going 20 minutes without ever folding pre-flop). He requested data on the hand history from Absolute Poker and received not only that, but also the hole cards for each player and IP addresses of both players and observers.

Once the suspicious player looked closer, he noticed that Potripper folded the first two hands of the tournament. Then observer # 363 arrived at the table, and Potripper didn’t fold again pre-flop for 20 minutes.

When the IP address of observer #363 was traced, it was revealed to be Scott Tom, who has since been identified as a former member of Team Absolute Poker.

THE DRAMA CONTINUES

Absolute Poker claimed after an investigation that “it is impossible for any person, device, program, script or other means to see hole cards.”

But it seems that explanation wasn’t good enough for their owner. Eight days later, Norton called the matter a “horrendous and inexcusable offense.”

At the moment, both the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and a third-party auditor, Gaming Associates, are conducting their own investigations. The results of these audits will be made available to the public.

And if you’re wary about playing again at Absolute Poker, why not switch over to a reputable casino like Bodog?

NFL Week 7 - Bodog Odds and Predictions

As we close in on Week 7 of the NFL season, it’s once again time to take a look at the current odds for the game. And in case you’re wondering how my predictions for last week turned out, I’m proud to say that I finished with a record of 8-3-2. That gives me an overall season record of 44-36-7.

Richard Lee Fined $2.2 Million in Bookmaking Case

Richard Lee, who finished sixth in the 2006 World Series of Poker, has agreed to a plea deal in San Antonio to avoid felony bookmaking charges. The lesser charges are for keeping a place for gambling, and Lee has also agreed to hand over $2.2 million.

RICHARD LEE

Originally born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Lee is semi-retired and enjoys playing poker for fun and profit. He competed in the WSOP in 2005, but fell short of the money. That same year, he finished 12th in the 2005 Grand Slam of Poker in L.A. In 2006, he finished 6th in the WSOP and earned $2,803,851.

LONG ARM OF THE LAW

Last year, police raided Lee’s house as part of an investigation into a sports betting website which was pretending to be offshore (unlike Bodog, which actually is offshore). Lee and four employees were arrested, and $2.5 million was seized. Lee was considered by authorities to be the bookie of the operation.

THE AFTERMATH

Lee’s employees also pleaded no contest to the same charge as their boss. They will each pay a fine of $2,100 and be on probation for a month.

According to an Assistant D.A., “In Texas, gambling is a misdemeanor, but when you hit them in the pocketbook, that’s where it hurts. The misdemeanor doesn’t hurt as much as the loss of all the ill-gotten gains.”

Who in the hell actually uses the phrase “ill-gotten gains” in a sentence other than slimy lawyers looking to advance their political career?

And what did Richard Lee have to say for himself?

“I’m glad it’s over,” he said. “Now I need to go win another poker tournament.”

And sure enough, he’s scheduled to leave for Vegas to play in a tournament at Caesars Palace. Knock ‘em dead, Richard.

Judge Rules Poker NOT a Game of Skill

Bad news if you’re a poker player living in the state of Pennsylvania. A judge there recently ruled that poker is a game of chance, despite the fact that most reasonable individuals have long considered it a game of skill.

WHAT AN ASS

The judge’s name is Richard McCormick Jr., and the decision was delivered in a Pittsburgh courtroom earlier this week. Wow, sounds like a real laugh-a-minute guy. Bet he’s a lot of fun on the weekend. Oh, and anybody want to guess what political party this guy belongs to?

HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED

The whole thing came down when Larry Burns, an attorney, tried to recover money taken from him by the cops during a gambling raid on a poker tournament he hosted this summer. Since poker is not illegal under state law, Burns contended that his hosting of these tournaments was in no way wrong. The district attorney didn’t agree.

John Peck, the D.A., argued that poker is a game of chance. “Whether you win or lose, it’s based essentially in the cards you are dealt, and that’s by chance.”

Unfortunately, the judge agreed with Prick..er….Peck. This means that all the money and gambling paraphernalia seized from Burns’ home will be held until his trial begins next month.

Just another backwards step for the gaming industry in their fight against holier-than-thou dimwits and jackasses.

Evander Holyfield vs. Sultan Ibragimov - Bodog Odds

On Saturday, October 13th, Evander Holyfield will take on WBO Heavyweight Champion Sultan Ibragimov at the Khodynka Ice Palace in Moscow, Russia. Holyfield will be attempting to win a fifth heavyweight world title. Holyfield has a career record of 42-8-2, while Ibragimov is unbeaten at 21-0-1. This will be the champ‘s first title defense.

THE CHAMP SPEAKS

“Like Holyfield, I know the value of hard work and determination, and I know never to take any opponent lightly,” said Ibragimov from his Florida training camp. “I don’t care how old Holyfield is, I don’t care who he’s beaten or who has beaten him. In my mind, he is the most dangerous opponent in the world, and I am training harder than I ever have to defend my title on October 13th.”

THE CLASSIC UNDERDOG

At 45 years of age, most experts counted out Holyfield a long time ago. But the fighter has refused to give up his dream of unifying the world titles before retiring. The state of New York would not approve him fighting due to “diminished skills,” so Holyfield fought a series of fights in Texas and won them all. Due to his household name, and lack of young superstars in the heavyweight division, the aging former champ has earned himself another shot at the gold.

But it wouldn’t be the first time he’s defied the odds. In 1996, he was a heavy underdog against Mike Tyson. Holyfield won by knockout in the 11th round. The Real Deal also has notable wins against Riddick Bowe, John Ruiz, Ray Mercer and Michael Moorer.

“I was told all my life I wouldn't be anything,“ said Holyfield, “so I've always been able to prove people wrong. The only thing I hold on to is to be the very best that I can be."

BODOG ODDS

As you might expect, Bodog is offering odds on this fight. There are no parlays, and the maximum bet is $500.

Who will win between Evander Holyfield and Sultan Ibragimov?

Evander Holyfield +290

Sultan Ibragimov -370

How long will the fight between Holyfield and Ibragimov last?

Over 10 ½ rounds -125

Under 10 ½ rounds -115

More Support for Barney Frank's UIGEA Bill

It’s always refreshing to be reminded that not everyone in politics is a complete moron. For example, Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank’s bill to license Internet gambling has just picked up another supporter.

A MAN CALLED GRIJALVA

Congressman Raul M. Grijalva of Arizona has become the 38th such enlightened individual to support H.R. 2046. This bill calls for the U.S. to license Internet gambling through the director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. In April, the bill was referred to the subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Grijalva obviously realizes that regulating online gambling is much more productive (and profitable) than trying to get rid of it all together.

A PLAGUE ON BOTH YOUR HOUSES

Last year saw the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). While it doesn’t outright ban online gambling in America, it does make it much more difficult by preventing banks from doing business with offshore casinos and poker rooms. Since Dubyah signed the bill into law, numerous online casinos have stopped accepting American customers. A few like Bodog are still taking American clients, but they are one of the exceptions.

While this has led some other countries to follow suit, it has also led the European Union to demand $100 billion in damages from the United States. Leave it to the Bush administration to continually make Americans look like a bunch of ignorant barbarians.

THE NUMBER GROWS

As the number of supporters grows, the odds of a suitable resolution slowly increase. Barney Frank has even indicated that he will soon introduce a bill that’s designed to end the UIGEA once and for all.

It’s going to be an uphill struggle, but enlightened politicians like Frank are leading the way. In fact, let’s take a look at all the current supporters of the bill. If you support the fall of the UIGEA, be sure and remember these folks the next time they’re up for re-election (assuming you live in an area where you can vote for them).

Is Tennis Rigged?

In recent times, most major sports have been touched by some kind of scandal. Whether it’s Barry Bonds, Michael Vick, or an NBA referee in debt to the mob, it seems that everyone is due their moment of infamy. Now it’s tennis’ turn. That’s right, I said tennis.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

A few months ago, an online betting site (not Bodog, by the way) voided bets on a match due to irregular betting patterns. As luck would have it, the much higher-ranked player involved in that match withdrew in the third set due to a “foot injury.” Things that make you go, “Hmmmm.” By the way, the winnings on the match amounted to over $6 million!

Since that time, players have come forward and admitted to being approached about throwing matches. Gilles Elseneer of Belgium claims to have turned down in excess of $100,000 to lose a match to Potito Starace of Italy at the 2005 Wimbledon.

MURRAY SPEAKS OUT

Andy Murray, a Scottish player ranked in the Top-20, has now went public about the problems in the tennis world.

"It's difficult to prove if someone has tanked a match or not tried because they can try their best until the last couple of games of each set and then make some mistakes, a couple of double-faults, and that's it," Murray said. "It's pretty disappointing for all the players, but everyone knows it goes on."

WHAT’S BEING DONE?

The ATP, International Tennis Federation, WTA Tour and Grand Slam Committee are all joining forces to come up with unified regulations to combat match tampering. A “Tennis Integrity Unit” is also being set up to look into the issue.

According to ITF director Bill Babcock, “Tennis is vulnerable. We have to keep the integrity of the matches. I think we have that, but we have this looming cloud now that we have to dissipate.”

SAW IV - Opening Weekend Odds from Bodog

Boy, that Jigsaw is something else. If you’re a junkie, callous surgeon or deadbeat dad, then you might very well find yourself caught in one of his elaborate and gruesome traps designed to punish the wicked. Of course, I’m talking about the mastermind villain from the blockbuster Saw franchise.

One of the most successful franchises in recent history, just look at what the first three films have done at the box office.

SAW FRANCHISE NUMBERS

The first film was shot on a budget of $1.2 million. It earned over $55 million at the U.S. box office and went on to make $102,917,772 worldwide.

Saw II was made for $4 million and raked in $87 million in the U.S. It grossed $144 million worldwide.

Saw III had a budget a $9.98 million. It grossed $80,238,724 in the United States and $150,907,724 around the globe.

SAW IV

The latest entry in the franchise, Saw IV, is scheduled to open on October 26th, 2007. Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) and his apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith) are dead, but the game is far from over. Two FBI profilers and a police detective (Costas Mandylor) must sift through the remaining clues before someone else dies. It’s also promised that we’ll learn more about Jigsaw’s past and his true intentions.

The film originally received an NC-17 rating by those tightasses at the MPAA. This was later reduced to an R after certain scenes were trimmed. Even with the changes, there’s no doubt that this one will be wall-to-wall blood and guts - perfect viewing for the Halloween crowd.

And for fans of the series, rest assured that his baby is just going to keep on rolling. Plans are already underway to make both Saw V and Saw VI.

SAW IV OPENING WEEKEND - BODOG ODDS

That’s assuming, of course, that this entry in the franchise isn’t a bomb. If you’ve got a strong feeling one way or another, or just have a few bucks to burn, why not visit Bodog and place a wager on the opening weekend results? The maximum wager for this bet is $50. Here are the prop bets being offered:

Will Saw IV gross more in its opening weekend than Saw I?

Yes (over $18.276 million) -1000

No (under $18.276 million) +550

Will Saw IV gross more in its opening weekend than Saw II?

Yes (over $31.725 million) -105

No (under $31.725 million) -135

Will Saw IV gross more in its opening weekend than Saw III?

Yes (Over $33.725 million) +110

No (under $33.725 million) -150

Poker After Dark - Highest Stakes Ever!

If you’re a big fan of high-stakes poker, you’ll just love this week’s episode of NBC’s Poker After Dark. Instead of the usual $20,000 buy-in, the fee for this week has been increased to $50,000. Only one person will walk away with the money, and they’ll receive a massive prize of $300,000! That’s more money than 18 of the 55 bracelet winners in the 2007 WSOP received.

WHAT IS POKER AFTER DARK?

The show is an hour-long late-night poker program which debuted in 2007. It airs six nights a week and is hosted by the foxy Shana Hiatt. Each week features a winner-take-all pot, and many of the players are top poker professionals. The game airs each night, Monday through Friday, with a winner being decided on Friday. Saturday’s show features highlights from the week’s play, plus interviews with the players and other behind-the-scenes goodness.

Despite its late timeslot, the show has enjoyed ratings success. It has even drawn higher rating that The Late Late Show, despite that program airing 90 minutes earlier.

THIS WEEK’S SHOW

Since this week’s show is for higher stakes than normal, it’s only appropriate that the players should be accustomed to big money games. Five of the players participating in the game are regulars over at Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio. They are Jennifer Harman, Eli Elezra, Barry Greenstein, Phil Ivey and David Benyamine.

And in case you didn’t know, Bobby’s Room is where the big money games in Vegas are played.

The sixth and final player of the week is Allen Cunningham. He may not be a regular at Bobby’s Room, but he does happen to be one of the top tournament players in the world.

This will be a tough game, as both Ivey and Harman have already won the Poker After Dark event earlier in the season (walking away with $120,000 each).

SHOWTIME

The match will begin at 2:05am EST on October 8th, and it will continue through Friday a the same time. The “Director’s Cut” will air Saturday at 1am EST, immediately following Saturday Night Live.

If you’re a true fan of poker, you don’t want to miss this one.

Will Cavemen Become Extinct? - Bodog Odds

Everyone seems to love the GEICO caveman commercials, but will the same hold true for the new show entitled Cavemen? Based on the commercials, the series has been described by the network as a “unique buddy comedy that offers a clever twist on stereotypes and turns race relations on its head.”

The show debuted on October 2nd and will air every Tuesday night at 7pm CST on ABC.

MEET THE CAVEMEN

The show takes place in San Diego, where cavemen Andy, Nick and Joel live together in an apartment. While they look very similar, they each have a distinct personality. Nick is a cynic who stays clear of female Homo Sapiens. Andy is a passive lump of hair, while Joel is sensitive and possesses a large libido.

POOR RECEPTION

ABC ordered 13 episodes of the show, but the pilot was met with less-than-favorable reviews. Afterwards, the show underwent and major overhaul before it was shown to a national audience.

Of course, whether the overhaul worked remains to be seen. If early critical response is any indication, the answer would be “no.”

One critic said, “Cavemen is an ill-conceived, humorless mess.”

Another said that the comedy “seemed interminable, and about as funny, as the Stone Age.”

In fact, many believe that it will be the first show of the new season to get the ax.

BODOG ODDS

Luckily, the good folks at Bodog have set odds on how long the show will last. The maximum bet for this wager is $50.

How many episodes of Cavemen will air before the show is cancelled or put on hiatus?

Over 4 ½ -115

Under 4 ½ -125

NFL Week 5 - Bodog Odds and Predictions

Another week of football has passed, and we here at Dare to Gamble hope it was a fun and profitable one for you. As the NFL continues its unpredictable ways, it seems to just get harder and harder to predict who’s going to come out on top. I mean, really, did you honestly see any of these coming:

1. The complete collapse of the Rams. Granted, their offensive line woes have been the majority of their problems.

2. The less-than-impressive performances of fantasy studs Ladainian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson and Steven Jackson.

3. The Browns’ sudden offensive spurt under new QB Derek Anderson.

4. The Texans suddenly looking like a competent franchise.

5. The Packers being 4-0 at this point in the season, especially without anything which resembles a running game.

Yeah, it just goes to show that you never know what’s going to happen next. All you can do is make your predictions and cross your fingers.

LAST WEEK’S PREDICTIONS

Speaking of predictions, I had an amazing streak in week 4. I went 11-3 on my predictions, raising my season total to 31-25-4. Not bad. Let’s see if I can keep it going.

Dan Rather Sues CBS - Bodog Odds

Today’s lesson - don’t screw with Dan Rather. It’s one that CBS and Viacom are learning the hard way, possibly to the tune of $70 million.

SUING HIS OLD BOSSES

Last month, the former anchor of the CBS Evening News filed a lawsuit against CBS News, Viacom, their respective presidents, and his former supervisor, Andrew Heyward. Rather has accused them of fraud and violating obligations of contract and good faith. The $70 million is to offset damages to his reputation. Man, I wish somebody would do $70 mil worth of damages to my reputation.

A FALLING OUT

Rather was hired in 1962 and covered Vietnam, the assassination of JFK, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Irag, the fall of the Soviet Union, 9/11 and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He served as the anchor of the CBS Evening News from 1991 until 2005.

But his career was basically over after he did a story in 2004 on 60 Minutes Wednesday. The story concerned President George W. Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard and how his father pulled stings to keep him out of Vietnam.

While this was already common knowledge, Rather had produced a source and also had memos from Bush’s commander in the National Guard who complained about the easy treatment of the future president. But after the story aired, the source for the memos changed his story about how he had obtained them. This immediately cast doubt on the authenticity of the documents.

Rather publicly apologized, but it wasn’t long before he was canned as the network’s top anchor. Four other employees were also fired or asked to resign by CBS.

After that, CBS put Rather on the shelf, keeping him away from any stories of importance. He wasn’t even sent to cover Hurricane Katrina, despite the fact that he had more hurricane experience than anyone else at the company.

THE FINAL STRAW

Through it all, CBS maintained that it would use Rather in the future and even extend his contract. But with a few months left on his $6-million-per-year contract, he was tossed out onto the street by the network. CBS has even went so far as to remove any archival videos or tributes of Rather on their site, opting to replace them with promos featuring hottie singer Gwen Stefani.

BODOG ODDS

So the big question is, will Dan Rather win his lawsuit? Well, you can head on over to Bodog and make your wager on the subject. The result must be made public by December 31st, 2008 for there to be action, and the maximum wager allowed is $50. Here are the current odds:

Yes, he will win the lawsuit -135

No, he will not win the lawsuit -105

Pamela Anderson Pays Off Poker Debt with Sex!!

There are two things we really love here at Dare to Gamble. The first is gambling, of course. The second is hot women. Here’s one that nicely blends the two together.

PAMELA ANDERSON SUCKS AT GAMBLING

So Pamela Anderson is at a casino in Las Vegas - probably looking to win enough to fund her next round of plastic surgery. After a bad run of luck, she finds herself $125,000 in the hole. While she tries to figure out what to do, she’s approached by a dashing hero who offers to pay off her gambling debt. All this white knight wants in return is for Anderson to “make out with him,” according to the former Playboy model.

One thing leads to another, like it often does for Pammy, and soon the making-out session turns into graphic sex (the kind that might remind you of yachts and Tommy Lee). A short time later, she’s in love.

Like she told Ellen DeGeneres, “It worked out, I liked it…I paid off a poker debt with sexual favors and fell in love. It’s so romantic.”

The man in question? Reputed “poker pro” Rick Salomon.

WHO THE HELL IS RICK SALOMON?

Salomon, 38, was briefly married to Hollywood hellcat Shannon Doherty in 2002. After that, he started porking Paris Hilton and recorded once of their sex romps, releasing it to the world as One Night in Paris. Yep, sounds like this guy is perfect for Pamela Anderson.

WEDDING BELLS?

Now things have moved to the next level. On Saturday night, the couple applied for a marriage license in Las Vegas. While the couple has yet to actually wed, the license will be good for one year.

Anderson has already had highly publicized marriages to Tommy Lee and Kid Rock (with those two men recently getting into a fight at the MTV Video Music Awards).

Wat
