Soccer Gambling Crackdown - 423 Arrested!

In a statement released today, Interpol announced a massive crackdown on soccer gambling which has resulted in the arrests of 423 people in Asia. Launched in June, the operation included law enforcement from China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The arrests were made in October and November.

Interpol referred to the arrests as an “excellent test” of international law enforcement cooperation as the 2008 Beijing Olympics draw near.

While Interpol coordinated the operation, police swooped in a shut down 272 underground gambling dens. These facilities were believed to have handled over $680 million in illegal bets around the globe.

“Illegal soccer gambling is not only a crime in itself, but is often linked with other serious offences such as corruption, money laundering and prostitution, which generate massive profits, all too often at the cost of public services and the safety of hardworking people,” said Interpol executive director Jean-Michel Louboutin.

“This operation has not only seriously affected the activities of organized crime gangs throughout Asia, but also served as an excellent test of national, regional and international police cooperation ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games.”

The operation had the codename of SOGA (short for “soccer gambling”) and was conducted to coincide with the beginning of football (soccer) season. Authorities seized cars, mobile phones, computers, bank cards and over $680,000 in cash.

LEGAL FOOTBALL BETTING WITH BODOG

What gets me is why anyone would illegally wager on football matches when a perfectly legal company like Bodog is around? For example, just look at the odds being offered for a couple of English Premiership matches taking place tomorrow:

Bolton Wanderers +1 @ Manchester United -1

Arsenal FC -2 @ Wigan Athletic FC +2

Vargas vs. Mayorga - Fight Preview and Bodog Odds

On Friday, November 23rd, former world boxing champions Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga will square off at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

These two really dislike one another, as evidenced by their press conference brawl and their repeated verbal taunting of one another. Mayorga has repeatedly referred to Vargas as fat, and Vargas has responded by insulting Mayorga’s mother and questioning his masculinity. This should make for one helluva grudge match.

They were initially scheduled to fight at 162, but this has been changed to a catch weight of 166, due to Vargas’ trouble making weight. Neither man has fought above 160 pounds in their careers.

RICARDO “EL MATADOR” MAYORGA

Mayorga is 28-6-1, with 23 knockouts and 1 no contest. He is 33 years old and holds notable wins over Andrew “Six Heads” Lewis and Vernon Forrest. He has lost to fighters such as Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Corey Spinks. Mayorga is the former WBC and WBA welterweight champ, as well as the WBC 154-pound title holder.

Style

A wild slugger, Mayorga is frequently off-balance due to his aggressive style in the ring. He lacks discipline, but he’s got a truckload of guts. He’s constantly swinging for the fences, and this crowd-pleasing style has allowed him to win all but five of his 28 victories by knockout.

Strengths

Mayorga has good knockout power, and he’s constantly looking to put it to the test. He also combines great physical strength with a solid chin. This native of Nicaragua is one tough customer.

Weaknesses

Mayorga smokes, drinks and lives a completely wild lifestyle. This translates into a lack of discipline inside the ring, and he throws wild shots which can make him vulnerable to skilled and patient fighters. His defense is also lacking, and an accurate puncher has a chance to pick him apart.

FERNANDO “FEROCIOUS” VARGAS

Vargas is the former IBF and WBA junior middleweight champion. His record is 24-4, with 22 wins coming by way of knockout. He is 29 years old and has notable wins over Javier Castillejo, Yory Boy Campas, Winky Wright, Ike Quartey. He has lost to Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, and Shane Mosley (twice).

Style

Vargas is an excellent boxer, but he also likes to get inside and bang. His left hook is particularly effective, and he is an all-around athlete.

Strengths

His left hook is his best shot, and his right cross is also very dangerous. He’s an excellent inside fighter, and he’s skilled at blocking, moving and throwing vicious uppercuts inside. He also possesses fluid movement and can maneuver around the ring with ease. Vargas has a lot of heart.

Weaknesses

Over the last several years, Vargas has suffered from a bad back. His chin has also been questioned over the course of his career. He’s prone to get cut, and he’s had trouble making weight in recent years.

BODOG ODDS

So who’s going to come out the winner in this one? Well, let’s see what our good friends at Bodog have to say. Remember, the maximum bet on each is $500.

Who will win the fight?

Fernando Vargas -180

Ricardo Mayorga +150

RESULTS VS. BODOG ODDS

We posted the betting lines from Bodog on Friday, so now it’s time to take a look and see if any underdogs beat the odds..

Of the 9 fights on the card, the Bodog favorite won 8 of those. The only upset according to the betting line was Thiago Silva at +140 defeating Houston Alexander. I might add that I correctly predicted that result (Listen carefully. That’s the sound of me tooting my own horn).

As far as my personal fight predictions, I went a respectable 7-2. My only misses were Akihiro Gono and Frank Edgar. Let’s see how I do in December and January, when the UFC is putting on three different shows.

Arrests at Borgata in Atlantic City Over Illegal Sportsbook

More news in the world of illegal sports betting. On Wednesday, cops arrested 18 people, including 4 with mob ties, who were running such a ring out of a high-stakes poker room in Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. Since March of 2006, it is estimated that the ring took in $22 million in bets for football and basketball. And unlike Las Vegas, Atlantic City doesn’t have a legal sportsbook.

ILLEGAL GAMBLING ARRESTS

The suspected ringleader of the operation was a man known as Andrew Micali. He’s a known associate of Philadelphia mob boss Joseph “Skinny Joe” Merlino. Others arrested on charges of loan-sharking, money laundering and promoting gambling included Vincent Procopio, Anthony Nicodemo and Michael Lancellotti. In all, 23 people were charged.

The group enlisted the aid of casino employees to conceal their crimes and were only caught when an informant told authorities what to look for on the casino’s surveillance cameras.

SPORTSBOOK WITHIN A CASINO

Publicized mainly by word of mouth, gamblers were told who to see in the poker room in order to place their bets. Casino employees who were involved would refrain from recording certain exchanges of cash and chips. In money laundering terms, this is known as “chip washing.”

Losers were also being forced to take out loans from the crooks in order to cover their losses. The interest on these loans was believed to be 50 percent.

SEARCH AND SEIZURE

Authorities seized more than $40,000 in cash and chips from a safe deposit box belonging to Micali at the casino. His bank account was also frozen with more than $200,000 in it. That money should help out greatly on Bush‘s ranch in Crawford. Hell, it might even be enough to help buy Dick Cheney a human heart.

NFL Week 11 - Bodog Odds and Predictions

Week 10 of the NFL season is finished, and now everyone gets to look forward to the return of the Patriots in week 11. If you plan on making any wagers this week, pay special attention to the injury situations throughout the league.

The Bills may have to take on the Pats without runner Marshawn Lynch, receiver Andre Johnson is poised to make his return in Houston, and badass rookie runner Adrian Peterson is definitely out for the Vikings. This is point in the season when the championship teams begin to shine and bumps and bruises turn into
sprains and fractures.

Amy Winehouse - Wager on Her Crazy Life

What would we do without crazy celebrities? Between their trips into rehab, failed marriages and amateur porn tapes, they add a little dash of color to our otherwise drab lives. And at the moment, one of the craziest of the crazy is an English songstress named Amy Winehouse.

GETTING TO KNOW AMY WINEHOUSE

Born in 1983 in London, Winehouse first drew attention with the release of her debut album, Frank. Since then, she has also released an alum entitled Back to Black.

Winehouse has become a constant source of tabloid headlines in the UK thanks to her drug, alcohol and bulimia problems. She married Blake Fielder out of the blue after the two has split up years earlier. They then spent time in rehab together. They also demonstrated their commitment to one another by getting arrested in Norway for possession of marijuana.

The couple were also photographed bloody and bruised after a fight allegedly started when her husband caught Winehouse doing drugs with a prostitute (which further fueled rumors that she was bi-sexual).

Her husband was arrested in November 9th on the charge of trying to pervert the course of justice. He reportedly offered to pay a bartender, who he had earlier assaulted, to change his story.

While Fielder reportedly spent the first 24 hours in jail sobbing, friends and family are terribly worried about the future well-being of the couple. In fact, Winehouse’s in-laws have went so far as to say that they fear that if one of the couple committed suicide, the other would most likely follow suit.

In a recent interview, Winehouse mumbled incoherently and even fell asleep three times. What a mess.

BODOG IS TAKING ODDS

Never one to miss out on the action, Bodog is taking odds on what will happen next in the wacky life of Amy Winehouse. The maximum wager is $50, and the options are:

What will happen first for Amy Winehouse?

Officially releases the video for her new single “Love is a Losing Game.” 5/2

Is dropped from her record label. 6/1

Gets arrested for DUI or Possession 5/6

Her husband gets sentenced to jail time. 9/5

Atlantic City Ready for a Comeback

There was a time when Atlantic City, New Jersey was the gambling destination. But over the past decade, it has given way to a thriving Las Vegas and various other casinos across the United States. However, if the city has its way, Atlantic City will once again be on top by 2012.

INTRODUCING THE REVEL

Recently, it was announced that Revel Entertainment Group would be constructing a $2 billion casino-resort in Atlantic City known as “Revel.” It’s scheduled to open in 2010, and it will become the city’s 12th casino once it does so. Featuring two towers rising 710 feet into the sky, the facility will also have 3,900 rooms to house guests.

PINNACLE ENTERTAINMENT AND THE MIRAGE

MGM Mirage (tentatively called “MGM Atlantic City“). Scheduled to begin operations in 2012, it will be the largest casino in the history of the city and contain 5,000 slot machines, 200 table games and 500,000 square feet of retail space. It will be located in the marina district next to the Borgata.

While no definite plans exist, other companies such as Caesar’s Entertainment are also considering placing new casinos in New Jersey.

MAJOR GROWTH EXPECTED FOR ATLANTIC CITY

This will be the largest amount of new investments to pour into the city since casino gambling started there in 1978.

And the new casinos will join an expanding skyline which includes new hotel towers from The Borgata, Trump Taj Mahal and Harrah’s Atlantic City.

These new investments will also encourage other investors to flock to the city in an effort to cash in, and local businesses may have to invest more simply to keep up.

The future for Atlantic City is looking very bright indeed.

UFC 78 - Complete Fight Card

On November 17th, 2007, the UFC will hold their latest pay-per-view. Entitled UFC 78: Validation, this event will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and feature a main event of Rashad Evans taking on Michael Bisping.

Most expected that Evans would have an immediate rematch with Tito Ortiz after their draw, but Tito chose to use the leverage to get himself a more lucrative contract. With no major fight planned, the undefeated Evans jumped at the chance to take on the also undefeated Bisping. Do note, however, that Bisping won an outrageous decision in his last fight and should have one loss on his record.

This event will also see an influx of Japanese talent coming into the octagon. PRIDE veterans Ryo Chonan and Akihiro Gono will both be making their UFC debuts. I’m especially interested in seeing what kind of crazy ring entrance Gono comes up with this time.

Kimbo Slice and EliteXC - Bodog Odds

EliteXC: Renegade will be taking place on November 10th, 2007 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The main card will also air live on Showtime at 10pm EST. In the main event, Nick Diaz will take on KJ Noons for the newly-created 160-pound title. However, the talk leading up to the fight is all about legendary street fighter Kimbo Slice (aka Kevin Ferguson) and his match against Bo Cantrell.

KIMBO IS THE MAN

After making a name for himself beating up guys on YouTube, Kimbo Slice entered the world of MMA a few months ago by taking on former boxing great Ray Mercer. Kimbo quickly choked him out to pick up the win, but Mercer was hardly what you would consider an MMA fighter.

He was next scheduled to go up against Tank Abbott, but the show they were to compete on got cancelled at the last minute due to a promotional dispute. After that, he signed with EliteXC and agreed to fight Mike Bourke. But Bourke suffered a shoulder injury during training and had to pull out of the fight. Enter Bo Cantrell.

NFL Week 9 - Results and Observations

Week 9 of the NFL season is in the books. Hope you all made a lot of money by betting over at Bodog‘s sportsbook. In case you missed it, here were the results of all the games.

NFL - WEEK 9 RESULTS

Ravens 7 @ Steelers 38

Cowboys 38 @ Eagles 17

Patriots 24 @ Colts 20

Texans 24 @ Raiders 17

Seahawks 30 @ Browns 33

Niners 16 @ Falcons 20

Chargers 17 @ Vikings 35

Panthers 7 @ Titans 20

Broncos 7 @ Lions 44

Cardinals 10 @ Buccaneers 17

Bengals 21 @ Bills 33

Jaguars 24 @ Saints 41

Redskins 23 @ Jets 20

Packers 33 @ Chiefs 22

WEEK 9 OBSERVATIONS

1. After dropping their first 4 games of the season, there still looks to be life left in the New Orleans Saints. After stinking up the joint against the Colts, Bucs, Titans and Panthers, they’ve come to life and scored 28, 22, 31 and 41 in the last four games. At this rate, they’re still in the playoff hunt.

2. Adrian Peterson showed why the Vikings snatched him up in the 1st round of this year’s draft. He destroyed the Chargers run defense, going for 296 yards on the ground. That doesn’t just set a rookie record, it also breaks the single-game rushing record. This kid is gonna be huge!

3. This has really been a nightmare year for fantasy football owners. Players have been dropping like flies since week 1, and things still haven’t let up (Week 9 may have been the last game of the season for Larry Johnson). Just look at the top 5 rushers for week 9:

Adrian Peterson 296

Clinton Portis 196

Marshawn Lynch 153

Ernest Graham 124

Ron Dayne 122

Ron Dayne?! No wonder fantasy GMs are pulling their hair out.

4. The Patriots made it 9 and 0 by coming from behind in the fourth quarter and defeating the Colts on the road. It was a tough game, but winning the tough games is the mark of a truly great team. While I don’t see them going undefeated, they’re certainly looking more and more like a monster. If they don’t win the Super Bowl this year, it’ll be amazing.

5. The Lions have quietly amassed a 6-2 record on the season. They destroyed the Broncos on Sunday and have shown that they can get it done on the ground or through the air. Watch out for this team if they make it into the playoffs.

Sportsbook Sting Nets Three in Louisiana

It looks as thought the long arm of the law has reached out once again and grabbed hold of a sportsbetting operation. This time, the perps (or victims, depending on your perspective) were men hailing from the state of Louisiana. They’ve been arrested and charged on suspicion of running an online sportsbetting operation.

HARDENED CRIMINALS?

Shane Musca-Rello, Fredrick Walters and Randall Rose were busted after police ran a sting where they placed bets on a website dubbed TheTinyTuna.com. Johnny Law is no doubt convinced that these individuals own and operate the illegal sportsbook.

To make matters worse, Musca-Rello and Walters have also been arrested and charged in St. Landry Parish by the Louisiana State Police in regards to the same sting.

Nice to know that everything is back to normal in New Orleans after the devastation inflicted by Katrina. Otherwise, how do you explain allotting law enforcement resources for such trivial “crimes”?

Whatever the case, the men are all being held pending a bail hearing.

LOUISIANA - TOUGH ON GAMBLING

This isn’t the first time that the Louisiana State Police have cracked down on online gambling. In 2006, a Louisiana warrant was issued for the arrest of Peter Dick, the Non-Executive Chairman of UK-based Sportingbet. He was later arrested at a New York airport and Sportingbet paid a $400,000 settlement to the state of Louisiana.

In recent times, Nick Jenkins and two associates were extradited to Louisiana from Washington after police conducted a sting operation on their Betcha.com website. They are still awaiting trial.

THE MORAL OF THE STORY

So what’s the moral of this story?

Don’t gamble?

Say your prayers in front of a picture of Dubyah every night?

No, the most likely moral is that Louisiana officials have nothing better to do with their time than track down harmless lawbreakers. Meanwhile, New Orleans remains one of the most crime-infested cities in the United States. Makes perfect sense, right? Thank God that Bodog is safely tucked away in Costa Rica.

Bodog Poker Approaches One-Billionth Hand

By the end of November, Bodog Poker will have dealt its one-billionth hand. And as you might expect with swingin’ CEO Calvin Ayre at the helm, the company is pulling out all the stops to celebrate.

Leading up to the one-billionth hand, Bodog players will have the opportunity to win money through daily random draws and participation in key milestone hands.

CALVIN AYRE SPEAKS

So what did the man, the myth, the legend, the second coming of Hugh Hefner have to say? Read on….

“We owe it all to our players for helping us reach our one-billionth hand, and we're saying thanks this November by giving away cash daily as well as tournament credits that players can parlay into a chance at winning thousands, even millions.”

"While this is an opportunity to look back at how far we've come since we launched our poker room in 2004, we're already looking forward to dealing our next billion hands. We will continue to provide players with the best online poker experience available as well as Bodog's world-class customer service."

LOTS OF FABULOUS PRIZES

Beginning with hand number 980,000,000, Bodog will give away money prizes for every five millionth hand dealt. This will continue all the way up until the one-billionth hand. Players involved in these hands will receive $109 in tournament credits, which can be used in any Bodog tournament (including those which allow the winners to compete for millions of dollars in WPT or EPT events.

Players will also split cash prizes during landmark hands. For example, everyone playing in the one-billionth hand will split $10,000.

In addition, drawings will be held each day from November 5th to November 26th, with 10 players each day selected to win $50 each. All you have to do to qualify is earn 100 Bodog poker points by playing online. And each time a player gets 100 points, they will receive another entry into the drawing.

And last, but certainly not least, Bodog will hold a grand prize drawing once the billionth hand has been dealt. The winner will receive $12,000 which will be paid out in the form of a $1000 monthly bankroll.
