College Gambling Ring Busted!

On Monday, two athletes from the Ohio University baseball team (one former and one current) were charged with conducting illegal sports gambling. The crimes are considered misdemeanors and carry a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

Brent Decoster is a former player on the Ohio baseball team, and Andrew Shisila is a senior who primarily serves as a relief pitcher for the Bobcats.

The operation was exposed by email in November, and the university then turned the evidence over to the police. While it has also been reported to the NCAA, it is unknown whether Shisila will lose a year of eligibility as punishment.

Two other players were also suspended for placing bets, and a total of eight people were involved in the betting ring. The bets were only made on professional sports, and there is no indication that players tried to influence the outcome of their own games (other than winning, of course).

Next time they want to bet, maybe they’ll do the smart thing and visit Bodog.
