FANTASY FOOTBALL NEWS

Foster Gets the Axe - While he showed flashes of greatness, DeShaun Foster never lived up to the hype. It also didn’t help that he seemed perennially injured. But don’t cry for DeShaun, as he got $4.5 million in guaranteed money in 2006 after signing a new contract.

The door is now wide open for DeAngelo Williams, a player that many have been drooling over since he came into the league. Sure, he’s small, but so was Warrick Dunn. It’ll be interesting to see if the Panthers let Williams tote the rock all by himself, or if they’ll look to get a more physical back to pair him with.

Either way, you’ve got to bump Williams up a few notches on your preseason rankings.

Thomas Becomes a Cowboy - Seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas, recently cut by the Dolphins, has signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys worth up to $3 million. A tackling machine, Thomas will be allowed to roam the field and do what he does best. While he only played in 5 games last year due to an injury, he was on pace for another season over 150 tackles. This is a move to keep your eye on, especially if your fantasy league allows independent defensive players.

Welcome Back, Mr. Grossman - In a move that has left many experts scratching their heads, the Chicago Bears have signed much-maligned quarterback Rex Grossman to a one-year contract. While he did lead the Bears to a Super Bowl in 2006, he also threw 20 interceptions to 23 touchdowns. Last season, he started 8 games and put up 7 interceptions to just 4 touchdowns. Looks like it may be another dull year for Bears fans, at least until Grossman gets benched.

Gates to Have Surgery - Antonio Gates, the badass tight end for the Chargers, will reportedly have foot surgery in the very near future. Recovery time is expected to be four to six months, but he’s expected to be back for the regular season. While this is never good news, a fully healthy Gates is far more dangerous than a banged-up one. At this point, he’s still the man when it comes to fantasy tight ends.
