2008 Major League Baseball Season Begins!

The 2008 Major League Baseball season kicked off on Tuesday, but it started a bit earlier than most American fans would have liked. The game between the defending champion Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics was played in the sold-out Tokyo Dome in Japan, meaning that the game started in America at around 6:05am EST.

But even though the bars couldn’t legally serve beer at that hour, it didn’t stop fans from stopping in to watch the game and gulp down a cup of coffee before going to work.

DICE-K ON THE MOUND

The star of the show was meant to be Japanese pitching sensation Daisuke Matsuzaka, known around the globe as Dice-K. He came to Boston last year after playing ball in Japan with the Seibu Lions, collecting a $52 million contract along the way. He finished 2007 with a 15-12 record.

Unfortunately, the Boston pitcher didn’t have his best day. After five uneven innings, he was pulled from the game in favor of another Japanese pitcher, Hideki Okajima.

It was Okajima’s night to shine, as he gave a solid performance in relief to lead Boston to a 6-5 victory in extra innings.

Manny Ramirez won player of the game honors after 4 RBIs, including a double in the 10th inning that brought in the two game-winning runs. He picked up an extra one-million yen for this honor ($10,000 bucks).
