Gambling Addicts Sue Over Losses

There have been two recent cases involving chronic gamblers suing either bookmakers or casinos over their massive losses. Let’s take a look at both, shall we?

BRIT SUES BOOKMAKER

On Wednesday, a British court ruled against Graham Calvert. A former greyhound trainer, Calvert was suing the William Hill chain of bookmakers for allowing him to place telephone bets even though he asked them to close his account. Calvert claims this cost him his marriage, health and job.

While wagering on horse racing and golf, Calvert lost more than 2 million pounds (roughly 4 million U.S. dollars). The High Court judge ruled that Calvert’s behavior was to blame for his ruin, not William Hill.

Before that, he was making about 50,000 pounds a year betting on greyhound racing, but they eventually limited his bets based on his insider knowledge of the sport. So he turned to golf and horse racing, losing 347,000 pounds on one bet during the 2006 Ryder Cup competition.

Somehow, I don’t think William Hill will be accepting any bets from him in the future. Luckily, there’s always Bodog sportsbook, which is far better, anyway.

FORMER LAWYER SUES CASINOS

In another case of sour grapes, a former attorney and TV commentator is suing seven casino in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. The reason? They failed to stop her compulsive gambling, which eventually led to her losing $1 million and her career.

Arelia Margarita Taveras was disbarred after taking $99,000 from escrow accounts for divorce and real estate clients to fund her gambling habit. These days, she works at a call center as an operator.

She is suing six Atlantic City casinos and one Vegas casino for a total of $20 million.

“They knew I was going for days without eating or sleeping,” she said. “They had a duty of care to me.”

Honey, the only duty the casino has is to take your freakin’ money. What a couple of pinheads.

The moral of the story? Don’t gamble anything that you can’t afford to lose. It’s that simple.

Speaking of simple, why not register with Bodog’s casino? It really couldn’t get any easier, just don’t sue us if you lose.
