NCAA Basketball Bubble Watch

March Madness continues to draw near, meaning that Selection Sunday is right around the corner. Which teams will make the NCAA Division I Tournament, and which teams will be left out in the rain? Here’s a quick rundown of some teams on the bubble.

MARCH MADNESS - BUBBLE WATCH

Oregon Ducks

While they made the Elite Eight last year, the current Oregon squad has struggled with the loss of point guard Aaron Brooks to the NBA. They’ve lost to three teams with RPI rankings under 100, which just isn’t going to get it done. To have any chance, they had to pull off a win last night against Arizona State. Luckily, they won by a score of 67-61. Next up is Arizona, and that game is a must-win as well.

Arizona State Sun Devils

They’ve beaten Xavier, Southern Cal and Stanford, but they’ve also lost to three teams below 100 on the RPI rankings. They really needed a win last night against Oregon, but they failed to get it. They’re not completely dead, but the vital signs are anything but steady.

Florida Gators

On Wednesday night, Florida held a 13-point lead at the half against the Tennessee Volunteers. A win would have worked wonders for their tournament chances, but the Vols mounted an impressive comeback and captured the SEC title by a score of 89 to 86. That puts the Gators at 3-8 against RPI teams ranked in the top 100 and headed for a showdown against Kentucky on Sunday. The winner of that game will stay alive, while the loser will most likely be forced to win the SEC Tournament to take part in March Madness.

Dayton Flyers

On the road against St. Bonaventure, the Flyers needed a win to stay alive. They got it, and they’ll finish their season this Saturday against Saint Joseph’s. Their 8-5 record against top 100 RPI teams isn’t bad at all, and one more win will give them a season record of 20-9. To quote the lads of Monty Python, “I’m not dead, yet.”

Oklahoma State Cowboys

After losing to the hated Sooners of Oklahoma on Wednesday night, you can officially stick a fork in the OK State Cowboys. After winning five games in a row, they went down in flames by losing to their arch-rivals. About the worst possible way to end the season.
