UPSETS AND CLOSE CALLS

There were no major upsets to speak of, but #2 Duke narrowly avoided a close call against #15 Belmont. It took a Gerald Henderson basket with 12 seconds remaining to lift the Blue Devils to a one-point win. No doubt, the Cameron Crazies were having flashbacks to their team‘s early exit last year.

The other “upsets” came as #11 Kansas State downed #6 USC and #9 Texas A&M beat #8 BYU.

Against the spread, the favorites were 13-3. Straight up, the higher seeds were 14-2. So far, it’s about what you would expect when smaller programs who just squeaked in take on basketball juggernauts.

But things should start to get really interesting in the second round. And don’t forget, we’ve still got a whole night of games on Friday. Hope springs eternal for the underdogs.
