Will Gene Upshaw Be Fired? - Bodog Odds

Things are starting to look rough for Gene Upshaw, head of the NFL Player’s Union. A recent email from Ravens kicker Matt Stover (the team’s union rep) leaked to the media and fanned the flames. In it, Stover addressed other player representatives and called for them to get rid of Upshaw before the new collective bargaining agreement is worked out in November.

The league’s owners are reportedly unhappy with the players getting 60 percent of the revenue, and it’s almost a certainty that they’ll bring everybody back to the negotiation table. According to his email, Stover felt that Upshaw is too accommodating to the owners and might actually cave in during negotiations.

MAN UNDER FIRE

Some conspiracy theorists even believe that the owners may have been behind the leaked email, hoping to cause a falling out among union members.

But this wasn’t the first time that players have taken issue with Upshaw. Many view his $7 to $11 million annual salary as too high. He has also drawn criticism for not doing enough to help retired players. Still, he does have his supporters, as NFL players such as center Kevin Mawae (president of the Player’s Association) have spoke out on his behalf.
