2008 Summer Olympics - Bodog Odds from China

Officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the 2008 Summer Olympics will kick off from Beijing, China on August 8th, 2008 and last until August 24th. Over 10,000 athletes are expected to be competing, and 302 events will take place in 28 different sports.

Beijing beat out Osaka, Istanbul, Paris and Toronto, and it’s expected that this Olympic Games is meant to showcase the country’s emergence onto the world stage after years of repressive Communist rule. Beijing had also made a strong bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympics, but they ultimately lost out to Sydney, Australia.

The slogan for this year’s event is “One World, One Dream,” and the event’s emblem has come to be known as “Dancing Beijing.” By June of 2007, 2.2 million of the over 7 million tickets to the Olympic Games had been sold.

Nine new events will be held this year, including two in the BMX Bike category, the women’s steeplechase, marathon swimming events for men and women, team table tennis for men and women, and plus women’s team sabre and women’s team foil.

On a side note, I can’t wait until mixed martial arts becomes an Olympic event. The sport is popular all over the world, so I don’t known if it’s really that far off. The only thing holding it back is the violent nature of the sport. The Olympics have boxing, but the fighters wear headgear, and an emphasis is placed on scoring points and not beating your opponent into submission. Still, hope springs eternal.
