FEDOR VS. SYLVIA

While the UFC is counter-programming with Anderson Silva’s move to light heavyweight, Affliction has put together a main event that’s going to be hard to beat. Fedor Emelianenko is widely regarded as the best MMA fighter on the planet, and he was the PRIDE champion when the company was bought out by the UFC.

He’s defeated the likes of Mark Hunt, Matt Lindland, Mark Coleman, Heath Herring and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He’s got one loss on his record, but that was a TKO due to a cut 17 seconds into the fight. In other words, he’s undefeated.

On the other hand, Tim Sylvia is a two-time UFC champ and hasn’t ducked anyone in his career. He’s tall, likes to work the jab, and can present difficulties for even the most skilled fighter. His most recent fight was a loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but Sylvia was battered the Brazilian prior to getting caught by a guillotine choke in the third round.

Sylvia has beaten Andrei Arlovski, Gan McGee, Jeff Monson and Brandon Vera. His four losses have come to Frank Mir, Andrei Arlovski, Randy Couture and Nogueira.

MAIN EVENT PREDICTION

Sylvia has a huge advantage in size, but Fedor will no doubt look to take the bigger man down to the canvas. There, he’ll ground and pound his opponent, and Fedor seems capable of throwing punches as hard on the ground as on his feet.

Sylvia will work the jab and probably look for the big knockout punch. Still, he’s far from helpless on the ground, and Fedor may have a harder time of getting him down than some of his other opponents.

Fedor tends to bleed a lot in fights, and he also isn’t shy about trading punches. This could work to Sylvia’s advantage as the fight goes on.

I’m predicting a win for Fedor by submission, but those looking for an underdog could do worse than the +275 Sylvia. He’s got big punching power, and it’s been a while since Fedor fought a high level of competition.

Whatever the outcome, this should be one of the best heavyweight fights in a long time.
