UFC 87 - Brock Lesnar and Bodog Betting Odds

UFC 87: Seek and Destroy will take place on August 9th, 2008 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The headlining fight will be a showdown for the Welterweight Title between Jon Fitch and reigning champ Georges St. Pierre. The other anticipated bout will be the second UFC fight of Brock Lesnar, as he takes on veteran heavyweight Heath “Texas Crazy Horse” Herring. Lesnar was supposed to fight Mark Coleman, but he withdrew due to an Achilles tendon injury.

UFC 87 - FULL CARD AND BODOG ODDS

As with all MMA fights, you can get all your odds from Bodog’s sports book. Three fights are available to wager on at the moment, but odds for all fights will be available as the show gets closer.

Preliminary Card

(Light Heavyweight) Andre Gusmao vs. Jon Jones

(Welterweight) Luke Cummo vs. Tamdan McCrory

(Welterweight) Ben Saunders vs. Ryan Thomas

(Welterweight) Chris Wilson vs. Steve Bruno

(Heavyweight) Cheick Kongo vs. Dan Evensen

Main Card

(Middleweight) Jason MacDonald vs. Demian Maia

(Lightweight) Manny Gamburyan vs. Rob Emerson

(Heavyweight) Brock Lesnar -270 vs. Heath Herring +210

(Lightweight) Kenny Florian -155 vs. Roger Huerta +125

(Welterweight Championship) Georges St. Pierre -340 vs. Jon Fitch +260

BROCK LESNAR VS. HEATH HERRING

Lesnar looked like a monster in his debut until wily veteran Frank Mir caught him in a heel hook and submitted him. This time around, he’s facing an opponent who doesn’t possess great ground skills, although Herring was on the ground plenty against guys like Fedor and Nog and survived. Herring is primarily a striker, so expect him to come out firing. Lesnar will no doubt want to take him to the ground, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see a brawl break out. Lesnar has something to prove, and a loss here might prove a quick end to his MMA career. Herring isn’t a cakewalk, however, and his +210 odds against the inexperienced Lesnar is mighty appealing.

GEORGES ST. PIERRE VS. JON FITCH

After starting his career at light-heavyweight, Fitch dropped down to welterweight and has reeled off 8 straight wins, tying Royce Gracie for the UFC record. While he would love to break that record and win the title, he’s facing one of the most skilled fighters in the game today. St. Pierre has speed, punching power and a solid ground game. After disposing of Matt Hughes twice, he’s now poised to rule over the welterweight division like Anderson Silva has done with the middleweights. But while Fitch is a talented fighter, I can’t help but feel that St. Pierre is just better. I’m expecting a first round win for the Canadian-born champion.

Iran is World Leader in Online Gambling!

The results are in, and the winners of the title of “Biggest Gamblers in Asia” may surprise you. No, it’s not the Chinese or even the Japanese or Koreans. It is, in fact, the good citizens from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Of course, this may come as a particular surprise if you suck at geography and didn‘t know Iran was considered part of Asia.

This survey was carried out by an online gambling site, and the numbers were determined by calculating the ratio of gamblers and skill players to the actual population of the country. They also factored in the amount of money spent by citizens for online gambling. When the results were tabulated, the following percentages were arrived at:

Iran 23%

China 14%

Japan 13.5%

The Indian subcontinent 10.5%

Thailand 9.5%

Russia 8%

South Korea 6.4%

Indonesia 5.2%

Kuwait 4%

United Arab Emirates 3.2%

Lebanon 2.7%

European Results

In Europe, Britain came in first place, followed by Romania, France, Italy and Ireland.

Affliction: Banned was held on Saturday night, and, by all accounts, it was a huge success. Just in case you missed it, here are the winners for all the fights on the card. Aleksander Emelianenko was originally scheduled to fight Paul Buentello, but he was pulled at the last minute and replaced with Gary Goodridge after failed to meet CSAC licensing standards.

Bodog Sends Three to 2009 WSOP - Bodog Online Poker

Three seats have already been awarded for the 2009 World Series of Poker, and that makes Bodog’s online poker room the first to give away such a prize. The WSOP seats were the grand prizes for Bodog’s recent Poker Mini Series, which was a 25-tournament event similar to the Texas Hold’em games in Las Vegas.

The big winners, “didix,” “Boswan,” and “pokerfanx789” were each awarded a $12,000 VIP prize package, and they’ll be able to compete for millions of dollars as representatives of Team Bodog (a group which includes such members as Evelyn Ng and David Williams).

BODOG MINI SERIES

The Bodog Mini Series came down to a final 27-player tournament. These players qualified by either being one of the top four players on the tournament leader board, one of the 18 from the semifinal qualifier or one of five “wild card” players selected through a random drawing. From these 27, a final table of 12 was eventually determined.

The final table was decided on July 10th. Besides the top-three players winning their $12,000 VIP packages, the other nine players also received $109 (which isn’t bad, considering that buy-ins started as low as $10+$1).

Overall, Bodog paid out $107,000 in prize money during the Poker Mini Series, and a total of 3,376 players participated.

OTHER OFFERS FROM BODOG

Bodog also allows players from around the globe to qualify for a number of additional poker tournaments throughout the year. These include the WSOP Europe (held annually in London), plus events in Asia, Europe and North America.

Besides poker, Bodog also offers a wide range of casino games and sports betting options. Why not follow the link to their site and find out what all the fuss is about?

UFC Silva vs. Irvin - MMA Betting Odds from Bodog

UFC: Silva vs. Irvin will be held this Saturday, July 19th, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The whole card was thrown together on short notice to compete with the big Affliction PPV which has Fedor Emelianenko. The main event will feature UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva moving up to fight in the light heavyweight division, and you can catch it for free on Spike.

Personally, this seems like a pretty chickenshit move to me. Instead of just accepting the fact that they might have a little competition, the UFC is rushing to cut the Affliction event off at the knees. And in the process, they’re risking a loss to one of their few current dominant champions. It just seems like this could end up costing them money in the long run, but nobody could ever accuse Dana White and company of thinking with their heads.

UFC: SILVA VS. IRVIN - FULL CARD AND BODOG ODDS

The card has a total of 11 fights, and Bodog has a betting line up for each one. Bodog offers fast payouts and some of the best customer service in the business, so you might want to click on the link and check them out.

Preliminary Card

(Middleweight) Tim Cedeur -450 vs. Cale Yarbrough +300

(Lightweight) Dale Hart +180 vs. Shannon Gugerty -220

(Welterweight) Rory Markham -270 vs. Brodie Farber +210

(Middleweight) Jesse Taylor +130 vs. C.B. Dollaway -160

(Welterweight) Anthony Johnson -295 vs. Kevin Burns +235

(Light Heavyweight) Brandon Vera -600 vs. Reese Andy +400

(Lightweight) Hermes Franca +135 vs. Frank Edgar -165

(Light Heavyweight) Anderson “The Spider” Silva -500 vs. James “The Sandman” Irvin +350

ANDERSON SILVA VS. JAMES IRVIN

Silva won the middleweight title by destroying Rich Franklin, and he has since won a rematch and also defeated Dan Henderson. He’s undefeated in the UFC, having won each of his four fights in two rounds or less.

His career record is 21-4, with 12 wins by knockout and 6 by submission. “The Spider” is comfortable on his feet or on the ground, and he even recently expressed interest in fighting Roy Jones Jr. in a pure boxing match. He stands 6’2” and currently weighs 205 pounds.

His last loss came in 2006, when he was disqualified for an illegal kick to the head of Yushin Okami. He is expected to have a rematch with Okami sometime in the next year.

Irvin knocked out up-and-coming Houston Alexander in 8 seconds, thereby tying the record for the UFC’s fastest knockout. The Sandman stands 6’2” and weighs 205 pounds, and his career record is 14-4 with 1 No Contest. Nine of his wins have come by knockout, while 2 have come by way of submission.

Irvin’s last loss was in 2006 to Thiago Silva, when Irvin suffered a knee injury and could not continue.

While Silva has been dominant as of late, Irvin is a +350 underdog. The world of MMA is filled with upsets, and Silva does normally fight at a lower weight class. Personally, I would wager on Irvin if I was pressed, and the offered betting line is pretty sweet.

Another one to look at is Reese Andy getting +400 against Brandon Vera. While I fully expect Vera to win the fight, you just never know what will happen inside the octagon.

(WAMMA Heavyweight Title Match) Fedor Emelianenko -400 vs. Tim Sylvia +275

FEDOR VS. SYLVIA

While the UFC is counter-programming with Anderson Silva’s move to light heavyweight, Affliction has put together a main event that’s going to be hard to beat. Fedor Emelianenko is widely regarded as the best MMA fighter on the planet, and he was the PRIDE champion when the company was bought out by the UFC.

He’s defeated the likes of Mark Hunt, Matt Lindland, Mark Coleman, Heath Herring and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He’s got one loss on his record, but that was a TKO due to a cut 17 seconds into the fight. In other words, he’s undefeated.

On the other hand, Tim Sylvia is a two-time UFC champ and hasn’t ducked anyone in his career. He’s tall, likes to work the jab, and can present difficulties for even the most skilled fighter. His most recent fight was a loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but Sylvia was battered the Brazilian prior to getting caught by a guillotine choke in the third round.

Sylvia has beaten Andrei Arlovski, Gan McGee, Jeff Monson and Brandon Vera. His four losses have come to Frank Mir, Andrei Arlovski, Randy Couture and Nogueira.

MAIN EVENT PREDICTION

Sylvia has a huge advantage in size, but Fedor will no doubt look to take the bigger man down to the canvas. There, he’ll ground and pound his opponent, and Fedor seems capable of throwing punches as hard on the ground as on his feet.

Sylvia will work the jab and probably look for the big knockout punch. Still, he’s far from helpless on the ground, and Fedor may have a harder time of getting him down than some of his other opponents.

Fedor tends to bleed a lot in fights, and he also isn’t shy about trading punches. This could work to Sylvia’s advantage as the fight goes on.

I’m predicting a win for Fedor by submission, but those looking for an underdog could do worse than the +275 Sylvia. He’s got big punching power, and it’s been a while since Fedor fought a high level of competition.

Whatever the outcome, this should be one of the best heavyweight fights in a long time.

Will Heath Ledger Win an Oscar as the Joker?

On July 18th, The Dark Knight will open in wide release throughout North America. While Christian Bale will reprise his successful turn as Batman, the late Heath Ledger will be making his debut at the villainous Joker.

Early reviews of the film are glowing, and Ledger in particular is getting a lot of praise. Co-stars such as Michael Caine have even went so far as to predict an Oscar win for the young Australian.

PREPARING TO PLAY THE JOKER

Prior to Ledger being cast as the Joker, actors such as Robin Williams, Steve Carell, Adrien Brody and Paul Bettany all expressed interest in the role. Ledger was confirmed to have won the role in July of 2006.

In true method acting style, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month. During that time, he developed the character’s voice, posture and psychology. He even kept a diary in which he recorded the Joker’s thoughts and feelings. Fortunately, he didn’t listen to any Prince during his stay at the hotel.

On the Joker, Ledger commented that he was a “psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy.”

He also stated in an interview that he knew his performance would not be universally well-received. “I know at the end of the day you are not going to please anyone 100 percent. I refuse to carbon copy a performance. That would not be a challenge, and it would be mocking Mr. Nicholson, whom I have much respect for.”

EARLY FEEDBACK FOR LEDGER

With The Dark Knight only days away, numerous reviews are already available on the Internet. Let’s take a look at what a few critics are saying about Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker.

“The late Heath Ledger, however, give us something darker and more twisted - a role that would have been no less memorable had it not been his last and most grueling.” James Berardinelli

“I can only speak superlatives of Ledger, who is mad-crazy-blazing brilliant as the Joker.” Peter Travers

“Ledger wrested the role from previous performers Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson and reinvented it completely.” Christy Lemire of the Associated Press

“With all due respect to the enjoyable camp buffoonery of past Jokers like Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson, Ledger makes them look like---well, clowns.” Justin Chang of Variety

AN OSCAR WIN FOR LEDGER?

So with all this praise, one has to wonder of Ledger will be nominated for an Oscar in his next-to-last role? Luckily, Bodog is taking bets on this question, so be sure and log-in to cast your vote.

Will Heath Ledger be nominated for a Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight?

2008 Summer Olympics - Bodog Odds from China

Officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the 2008 Summer Olympics will kick off from Beijing, China on August 8th, 2008 and last until August 24th. Over 10,000 athletes are expected to be competing, and 302 events will take place in 28 different sports.

Beijing beat out Osaka, Istanbul, Paris and Toronto, and it’s expected that this Olympic Games is meant to showcase the country’s emergence onto the world stage after years of repressive Communist rule. Beijing had also made a strong bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympics, but they ultimately lost out to Sydney, Australia.

The slogan for this year’s event is “One World, One Dream,” and the event’s emblem has come to be known as “Dancing Beijing.” By June of 2007, 2.2 million of the over 7 million tickets to the Olympic Games had been sold.

Nine new events will be held this year, including two in the BMX Bike category, the women’s steeplechase, marathon swimming events for men and women, team table tennis for men and women, and plus women’s team sabre and women’s team foil.

On a side note, I can’t wait until mixed martial arts becomes an Olympic event. The sport is popular all over the world, so I don’t known if it’s really that far off. The only thing holding it back is the violent nature of the sport. The Olympics have boxing, but the fighters wear headgear, and an emphasis is placed on scoring points and not beating your opponent into submission. Still, hope springs eternal.

The final result was 4-1 against the underdogs. The only dog that won was Forrest Griffin, who was a +200 candidate to get his block knocked off.

Scotty Nguyen Wins $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship

Scotty Nguyen has done it again! This time, the world-renowned poker player and generally nice guy has won the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship at the 2008 World Series of Poker. For taking first place, Nguyen won $1,989,120, which brings his career earnings to around $10 million. This also marked his 36th-career cash in a WSOP event.

SCOTTY NGUYEN - HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Nguyen grew up in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. When he was 14, he and sixteen others boarded a boat and tried to sail to Thailand. After being pursued by Communist police, they became lost. The group had taken enough food, water and fuel for a two-day journey.

Twenty-two days later, plans were being made to eat Nguyen’s 12-year-old brother. Luckily, they were rescued by a boat from Taiwan before that could happen, and Nguyen’s family eventually made it to America.

Now he’s a millionaire.

BACK ON TRACK

This is Nguyen’s first WSOP bracelet since 2001, and that gives him five bracelets overall. That accomplishment ties him with such players as Chris Ferguson, Allen Cunningham and Berry Johnston. It also makes for a great comeback after a disappointing 11th-place finish in last year’s Main Event. While most would be happy to finish that high, Nguyen reportedly became physically ill, didn’t leave the house and eventually lost 15 pounds.

“When I was first coming into poker, I wanted to be playing with Doyle, Chip and Stuey. Now, two of them are gone. I wanted to win this trophy to be the first winner to honor Chip.”

Nguyen was referencing the 60-pound memorial Chip Reece trophy which was created to honor the poker legend who passed away unexpectedly in the last year. Reece was the inaugural H.O.R.S.E. champ at the WSOP.

After thanking his wife and many others, Nguyen vowed that he would go on to win the Main Event. No doubt, there are many in the poker community who will be pulling for him.

SCOTTY NGUYEN’S WSOP WINS

1997 - $2,000 Omaha 8 or Better (won $156,950)

1998 - $10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship (won $1,000,000)

2001 - $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha (won $178,480)

2001 - $5,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better (won $287,580)

2008 - $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship (won $1,989,120)

OTHERS AT THE FINAL TABLE

To win the event, Scotty had to fend off some of the best overall poker players in the world. In fact, nine of the 16 players who finished in the money were former WSOP bracelet winners, and five of the eight at the final table could also make that claim. The battle at the final table raged for 14 grueling hours.

23-year-old Michael DeMichele finished in second place, while possible player of the year, Erick Lindgren, finished in third.

The WSOP Main Event begins Thursday, July 3rd.
