Jason Castro Eliminated From American Idol

Last night, American Idol whittled its number down to three. The victim this time around was Jason Castro, the dreadlocked 21-year-old who botched both Bob Marley and Bob Dylan in recent weeks. In all, over 51 million votes were cast this week, making that the season high.

The strain was beginning to wear on Castro, and he admitted as much in an interview. “Everything was all off,” he said. “I did not want to go home. But at the same time, now that it happened, I’m kind of glad. It all worked out like it was supposed to. I was reaching the point where I couldn’t do it anymore. I wasn’t able to keep up, and it all caught up with me.”

THE FINAL THREE

That leaves frontrunner David Archuleta, David Cook and Syesha Mercado. While everyone expects Archuleta to win, grinning idiot Ryan Seacrest made sure to point out that only 1 million votes separated the remaining three contestants. In other words, it’s still anybody’s game.

Dancing With the Stars celebrated their 100th episode the other night, but R&B singer Mario wasn’t exactly in a celebrating mood after being eliminated from the show. The 21-year-old star and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, were sent packing after earning 53 out of 60 points for a Viennese waltz and jive on Monday. The couple finished in third place on the judges’ scorecards.

Cristian de la Fuente hung in there after rupturing a tendon in his bicep last week, and he and partner Cheryl Burke finished with the top score. After getting dropped on her head last week, Burke choreographed this week’s routine to allow the Chilean actor to use his good arm. It worked like a charm.

In a court ruling today, Britney Spears will be allowed to spend more time with her kids. While it’s unclear how much of an increase was granted, ex-husband Kevin Federline’s lawyer referred to it as “an expansion of time.”

Spears has shown improvement since leaving a psychiatric ward three months ago. She has spent more time with family members and even guest-starred on television’s How I Met Your Mother. Her acting gig was well-received, and she’s scheduled to make another appearance on the show in the coming months.

Prior to her stay at in the psych ward, Spears was seemingly spiraling out of control. Her visitation time with her children had been greatly reduced, and she appeared to be an emotional wreck. Until a July 31st hearing, her father and lawyer have been granted legal control of her affairs.

Her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, have been thrilled with Britney’s progress. During the hearing, the pop princess smiled slightly and held her mother’s hand, and she even appeared teary-eyed at one point.

Brooke White Eliminated from American Idol

Wednesday night was the end of the road for Brooke White on American Idol. Joining Syesha Mercado in the bottom two, the blonde songstress was best known for her tearful outbursts during the show, like last week when she had messed up a song and had to start over.

This week, Neil Diamond was the guest mentor. White sang “I’m a Believer” and “I Am I Said.” Simon Cowell called her first performance “a nightmare” but then complimented her on the second, saying, “This is the Brooke we like.”

After White received news of her elimination, she performed “I Am I Said” as her goodbye song. During the performance, she once again broke out in tears and ran off the stage.

PAULA GOES CRAZY…AGAIN

On Tuesday night, Paula made another of her famous goofs. Contestants usually sing two songs before judges critique them, but there was a last-minute change in plans, and judges critiqued the singers after each song. After Jason Castro performed his first song, he went before the judges. Paula Abdul gave him a negative review for his two songs, but he had only performed one at this point.

She’s gotta be on something.

After a nice run on Dancing With the Stars, 34-year-old actress and poker player, Shannon Elizabeth, is going home. Also eliminated was her partner, Derek Hough.

“The show has been amazing. I’ve learned a lot,” said Elizabeth.

Hough said he “couldn’t have asked for more” from a dance partner, lovingly referring to Elizabeth as “a big dork.”

The couple’s dances on Monday earned 51 out of 60 points, and their elimination broke a three-week trend of the lowest scorers being eliminated. That honor went to Cristian de la Fuente after he injured his arm during a performance and dropped partner Cheryl Burke to the floor. He was then rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a ruptured tendon in his bicep.

While he needs surgery, de la Fuente hopes to put it off and keep performing. “If people voted for us and they would like us to be on the show, I would like to continue and not give up.”

Saturday, May 3rd, Oscar De la Hoya will be returning to his hometown of Los Angeles to take on former IBF super featherweight champion Steve “Two Pounds” Forbes (33-5).

OSCAR DE LA HOYA

De la Hoya has stated that he would like to fight twice after this match. The first would be a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the last fight of his career would be in December of 2008 against an unnamed opponent. No doubt, the De la Hoya camp is hoping that he can pull off a win against Mayweather and set up their third match as “The Golden Boy’s” last.

In interviews, De la Hoya has stated that he is not looking past Forbes. According to De la Hoya, “He is a dangerous customer, he has a tricky style.” Forbes has never been stopped in a fight.

STEVE FORBES

Forbes realizes that he’s an underdog, but he’s beginning to tire of the dismissive attitude of fans and critics. “I’m an underdog, I understand that. But the more I see and read, it’s like I never put on boxing gloves before, like I only started boxing yesterday.”

Forbes vows to give his best, stating that people have been counting him out since he was born. His nickname, “Two Pounds,” is a reference to his birth weight. Born prematurely, doctors did not expect him to live.

Three NBA playoff games are on tap for tonight, and Bodog is offering wagers on each one. Lets take a look at each:

TORONTO RAPTORS VS. ORLANDO MAGIC

The Magic lead the series 3 games to 1, and they find themselves hosting tonight’s game. If they win, they’ll close out the series and advance to the next round. The combination of Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoqlu have given the Raptors fits, especially against smaller defenders like Anthony Parker.

But the biggest problem for the Raptors has been figuring out how to stop Dwight Howard. He’s been lethal on the offensive boards, but his free-throw-shooting percentage isn’t quite as high as would be hoped for. Therefore, expect the Raptors to send him to the line as often as possible.

Toronto Raptors (+7 ½) vs. Orlando Magic (-7 ½)

BOSTON CELTICS VS. ATLANTA HAWKS

It’s no real surprise that the Celtics lead this series, but many would have expected a clean sweep of the Hawks. As it is, Atlanta has managed to hang in and win one of the three games so far, in part due to a great performance by Josh Smith. Tonight, they’ll host Game Four.

The Celtics had their best regular season record since the days of Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, and they improved 42 games over last year. The eighth-seed Hawks, in the meantime, are making a trip to the playoffs for the first time since the 1998 season.

The Celtics are 5-0 in playoff series against the Hawks. Don’t expect that to change.

Boston Celtics (-9 ½) vs. Atlanta Hawks (+9 ½)

LOS ANGELES LAKERS VS. DENVER NUGGETS

The Lakers lead the series 3 games to none, and they are 6-0 against the Nuggets this year. The frustration is beginning to show for players such as Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson, especially after Saturday’s 102-84 blowout.

I’ll keep this one short: Lakers in four.

Tonight, the Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens will square off for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. It should be especially interesting, considering what happened at the end of Game 2.

After the Flyers went up 4-2, Canadiens’ winger Tom Kostopoulos nailed Flyers’ defenseman Kimmo Timonen with a cheap shot to the face. Kostopoulos only got a two-minute roughing call for an act which Philly head coach John Stevens called “cowardly,” but you can bet that Timonen’s teammates will be looking for payback tonight.

In fact, Canadiens’ coach Guy Carbonneau fired back by saying, “That’s one team that shouldn’t talk. They played 82 games and had the most suspensions in the league.” He then went on to rub salt in the wound by saying that Timonen deserved it.

Man, I’d love to see an NFL or NBA coach say that kind of thing. He’d get fined so fast that his head would spin.

FLYERS VS. CANADIENS - NEWS AND NOTES

Flyers’ goalie Martin Biron has been solid, making 34 saves for the team in the second game of the series.

Forward Mike Knuble may also be close to returning, as he was skating by himself on Sunday. The most likely scenario is that he’ll return for Game 4 on Wednesday.

Canadiens’ goalie Carey Price has struggled so far, allowing seven goals in two games.

The Canadiens will be without defenseman Patrice Brisebois on Monday night, as he did not travel with the team to Philadelphia. Instead, he was scheduled to consult with doctors on Monday regarding a leg injury suffered Saturday morning.

Now that former Titans’ cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has signed with the Dallas Cowboys, everyone is just holding their breath and waiting for the sounds of the impending train wreck. Owner Jerry Jones got him for a fourth-round pick (with a conditional sixth-rounder thrown in if he plays in 2008), which isn’t bad, considering Tennessee took him with the 5th pick overall in the 2005 draft.

LEGAL TROUBLES FOR PACMAN JONES

Pacman has been in some serious legal trouble over the last few years, and a lot of it has taken place at strip clubs. Here’s a brief list of some of the charges which Pacman has faced:

Assault and Felony Vandalism (arrested in 2005)

Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication (arrested in 2006)

Tonight, the first round of the NBA playoffs continues with three exciting match-ups. Here’s a brief look at each, along with the current odds from Bodog sportsbook. If you‘ve never used Bodog before, why not give it a try? And remember - they also have an online casino that‘s second to none.

PISTONS VS. 76ERS

The series moves to the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, as the teams split the two games at The Palace in Auburn Hills. Game four will be played on Sunday. Detroit evened the series on Wednesday with five Pistons in double figures and a 105-88 drubbing. This is the Sixers’ first postseason visit since the 2004-2005 season, while the Pistons have made the Eastern Conference finals five years in a row.

HORNETS VS. MAVERICKS

After their first-round choke job last year in the playoffs, is it any real surprise that the Mavs are down 2-0 against the Hornets? Neither game has been close, and the last was a 127-103 win in New Orleans. The series now moves back to Dallas, and you can probably expect the Mavericks to at least keep from getting swept. Still, the Hornets are hungry, so that +6 is looking mighty tempting.

SPURS VS. SUNS

The Phoenix Suns are certainly the more exciting team to watch, so you can bet that the dull-as-hell Spurs will win the series. And they’re well on their way to doing so, having built a 2-0 lead in the series. In the last game, the Spurs won 102-96 thanks to 32 points from Tony Parker and 28 from the NBA Sixth Man of the Year, Manu Ginobili. If the Suns are going to make a comeback, it has to start tonight at the US Airways Center.

David Blaine has tried to perform a number of risky stunts during his career: being buried alive for seven days, encased in a closet of ice, locked in a Plexiglas case for 44 days without food and being submerged underwater for seven days and seven nights.

Upon completing the latter trick, Blaine then tried to break the world record for holding his breath underwater (8 minutes and 58 seconds). Blaine lasted 7 minutes and 33 seconds, before having to be rushed to the hospital.

Several months ago, you may remember our article about David Blaine’s next stunt - breaking the record for consecutive days without sleep. For whatever reason, however, Blaine was yet to attempt this dangerous challenge. Instead, he’s opted to try and break the underwater-breath-holding record again. But this time, he’s attempting it on television.

GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS

The good news for Blaine is that he’ll be making the attempt on Oprah Winfrey’s show on April 30th. Talk about a ton of exposure!

The bad news?

Someone else has broken the record since Blaine’s last attempt. The new record is almost double the old one at an astounding 16 minutes and 14 seconds. Let’s at least hope Oprah gives Blaine a new car for his efforts.

Another American Idol episode is in the books, and this time it was Carly Smithson’s turn to get the boot. The singer gave a great performance from Jesus Christ Superstar on a night when legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber was acting as mentor, but it wasn’t enough to save her from elimination.

According to Carly, “At this stage, everybody's thinking they're going home. I'm actually not that sad to be leaving. I think I made enough of an impact to be able to reach a good fan base. And now I just get to be me without a theme night and make a really cool record, so I'm excited.”

Another week for Dancing With the Stars, and that means it's time for another celebrity to go home. This time around, it was Marlee Matlin and her dance partner, Fabian Sanchez. The other couple in the bottom two was Mario and Karina Smirnoff, so they might be in danger next week.

There was also some drama backstage, as Shannon Elizabeth and partner Derek Hough apologized for their comments about the judges' critiques being unfair. No doubt, this did not help their chances of advancing in coming weeks.

Marlee was gracious in elimination, thanking the judges, her family, her dance partner, the fans and even Henry Winkler. And for those of you who don't know, Matlin is deaf. Imagine trying to dance without even being able to hear the music.

Calvin Ayre Retires from Bodog!

It was announced today that Calvin Ayre would be retiring from his role as the face of Bodog. While we’re gonna miss him, potential customers should be aware that Bodog will continue to operate smoothly. In fact, Ayre transferred ownership of the brand in North American to the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group in the middle part of 2007. A European team is also in place to manage places such as Africa, Europe and Latin America. Bodog‘s main office is on the island nation of Antigua.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CALVIN AYRE?

Ayre, a billionaire playboy and star of his own comic book, will be taking time to relax at his home on the island of Antigua. He has stated that he will also continue to work with various worldwide charities through his Calvin Ayre Foundation.

WELL WISHES

While I’ve never met Calvin Ayre, I certainly couldn’t help but like him. On a number of occasions, I referred to him as a “modern day Hugh Hefner” - and I meant that. Everything Ayre does seems classy - from posing with delicious-looking models to working to save brown bears from captivity in China. He’s just one of those guys who was all things to all people.

And now he’s gone.

The latest event for the UFC is entitled UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2. It will take place on Saturday, April 19th, from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This will be the UFC’s first-ever event to be held in Canada.

The main event of the night will feature Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre fighting for the welterweight title. Serra first gained the belt by upsetting St. Pierre in April of 2007. He was set to defend it against rival Matt Hughes, but Serra suffered a injury and had to withdraw. St. Pierre filled in against Hughes, destroying him to claim the interim welterweight title.

Kristy Lee Cook Eliminated from American Idol

The latest American Idol contestant to be eliminated is Kristy Lee Cook. The results were revealed Wednesday night, as grinning goof Ryan Seacrest presided over the event. Other members of the “Bottom Three” were Brooke White and Syesha Mercado.

Mariah Carey was the show‘s mentor for the week. Next week, it will be Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

KRISTY LEE COOK

The 24-year-old cutie from Oregon claimed that she sold her horse to get the money to audition for the show. Now, the man who bought it won’t sell it back. Tip = don’t sell anything you might want back.

She said that appearing on Idol had been “a huge dream,” but admitted that she was surprised by her elimination, saying that she thought she had another week or two left in her.

For her final performance, Cook sat on the judges table and sang directly to Simon Cowell.

Lakers Beat Kings - Secure Top Seed in Western Conference

On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers downed the Sacramento Kings by a score of 124-101. In the process, Kobe and company officially secured the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They’ll face the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs.

Kobe Bryant scored 20 points, while Pau Gasol led the team with 22. Lamar Odom accounted for 15, Vladimir Radmanovic had 14 and Jordan Farmer contributed 13 off the bench.

For the Kings, Quincy Douby led all scorers with 32 points, which is especially impressive considering that he came off the bench. Beno Udrih scored 22, Francisco Garcia had 15 and Shelden Williams got 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Kings were without both Ron Artest (thumb) and Kevin Martin (strained knee).

A COMFORTABLE LEAD

At the half, the LA Lakers were up 62-48, and they never looked back. With seven minutes to go in the third, they had increased the margin to 19 points. To end the third quarter, they went on a 12-3 run. While the Kings struggled from the field, the Lakers opened up a 30 point lead with just over 5 minutes remaining in the contest.

As the regular season came to a close for the Lakers, they ended on a six game home winning streak. On the season, they were 30-11 at the Staples Center.

Dancing With the Stars Eliminates Priscilla Presley

Dancing With the Stars was back for another episode on Tuesday night, and this time it was Priscilla Presley who got kicked off. The 62-year-old widow of Elvis Presley finished with the lowest score of the week, and her rumba only captured 21 out of 30 points.

Presley admitted to a weekly combination of candles and yoga to calm her nerves, but the tactic ultimately failed her in the end. Still, he did manage to outlast the likes of Adam Carolla, Steve Guttenberg, Penn Jillette and Monica Seles.

Like all the contestants so far, Presley was upbeat after her elimination. “This has been an incredible experience,” she said. “It is life-changing…I learned so much about myself and all the things I can do.”

With her elimination, seven celebrity dancers now remain, including Marlee Matlin, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Cristian de la Fuente, Shannon Elizabeth, Mario, Jason Taylor and Kristi Yamaguchi.

This week’s high score was Kristi Yamaguchi, while Marlee Matlin had the second-lowest score. The show airs each Tuesday night on ABC.
